He is a second-year student, and has been classmates with Sakuta Azusagawa and Rio Futaba since their first year, being one of their close friends. He has a good appearance and develops close friendships with Sakuta and Rio, undisturbed by rumors circulating around them. He is dating Saki Kamisato and is a member of the basketball club. He also works part-time at a family restaurant together with Sakuta, with Tomoe Koga later joining them.
He often exchanges jokes with Sakuta, but when Sakuta tells him that Rio is in trouble, he immediately rushes over on his bicycle, showing his caring and loyal nature as a friend. He is liked by Rio Futaba; although he is aware of her feelings, he does not know how to respond and pretends not to notice. In volume 3, after being confessed to by Rio, he tells her “You don’t have to give me an answer,” and continues to maintain their friendship.
He also hears about Shoko Makinohara from Sakuta, and although his relationship with his first love at the culture festival is unclear, he meets the middle schooler Shoko. When Shoko is hospitalized or in critical condition, he rushes to the hospital to see her.
He was raised in a single-mother household, and in pursuit of independence, chooses to become a firefighter instead of going to college. After officially becoming a firefighter, he reunites with Sakuta and Rio in volume 11, and they share updates on their current lives. His relationship with Saki Kamisato continues.
