Soul Eater

Soul has distinctive whitish-silver hair and striking red eyes.

He is slightly taller than his partner, Maka, with a noted height of around 151cm according to a comparison chart from the first anime series.

Soul lives by his catchphrase, "Let's go coolly," and constantly strives to maintain a cool and collected demeanor. He often acts cynical and detached, but this is largely a facade.

Underneath his cool-guy act, he is surprisingly hot-blooded and passionate. He cares for Maka more than himself and possesses a strong resolve to protect her, unafraid of even death.

While he has a decent level of general knowledge, his academic performance is poor. He once even plotted to cheat on a major written exam, only to be caught immediately.

True to his name, he has a great love for souls and was often seen drooling at the thought of eating one in the early parts of the story.

Soul's real name is Soul Evans, and he hails from a renowned family of musicians. He was a skilled pianist, but he grew up in the shadow of his musical genius older brother, Wes.

Feeling he could never surpass his brother, Soul was troubled until he awakened his powers as a Demon Weapon. He used this as an opportunity to run away from his past and enroll in the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA).

Due to these circumstances, he despises his family name and adopted the stage name "Soul Eater." He also avoids playing the piano, claiming he's "not good enough to play for others."

Weapon Transformation

Soul's weapon form is a Demon Scythe. He serves as Maka's partner in battle.

Black Blood and Madness

After being slashed by Crona's demon sword, Black Blood entered his body. This created the "Black Room" in his mind, a mental space inhabited by a little demon in a double-breasted suit who symbolizes Madness.

Though the demon constantly tempts him to give in to Madness, Soul's immense willpower allows him to resist. He learns to harness the power of the Black Blood without losing his sanity.

Soul Resonance Piano

Thanks to Maka's excellent Soul Perception ability, they can achieve a special resonance. By playing the piano with his soul, Soul can transmit their shared soul wavelength as sound to all their allies, enhancing their connection.

Maka Albarn

Maka is his Meister and partner, with whom he also lives. He is incredibly devoted to her, willing to go to any lengths to protect her.

Soul's voice actor in the anime is Kouki Uchiyama, while Soichiro Hoshi voiced him in the drama CDs. The little demon in his mind is voiced by Hochu Otsuka.

"Soul Eater" is a stage name; his real family name is Evans. He is one of the series' most important figures and a title character, but he is often seen as the "second protagonist" to Maka.

Early Days at the DWMA

At the beginning of the story, Soul and Maka had successfully collected 99 evil human souls (referred to as Kishin Eggs in the anime).

Their progress was reset when they mistakenly hunted the cat-monster Blair, believing her to be a witch. After they took her soul, all 99 of their collected souls were confiscated, and they were forced to take remedial lessons. To their dismay, Blair, who has multiple souls, quickly revived.

The Influence of Black Blood

During a battle with Crona, Soul was grievously injured by the demon sword, which caused Black Blood to enter his system. This led to the appearance of the "Black Room" and the little demon in his psyche, who repeatedly tried to lure him toward Madness. Soul fought to control this power, confronting both Madness and his own past in the process.

Becoming a Death Scythe

After the mission to take Baba Yaga's Castle concluded, he and Maka resumed their hunt for souls. He successfully consumed the soul of the witch Arachne Gorgon, officially becoming the 9th Death Scythe.

The Last Death Scythe

Following the resealing of the Kishin Asura, Death the Kid became the new Shinigami. A pact of peace was made between the DWMA and the witches, ending the practice of creating Death Scythes from witch souls.

As a result, Soul became the final Death Scythe ever created. Kid granted him the new title of "Last Death Scythe" to serve as a witness to the vow between the DWMA and the witches. At this time, he also changed his stage name to "Soul 'Eater' Evans," symbolizing his decision to fully accept his family, his past, and his life with the piano.
