Shikijou

Shikijou is very tall, standing at 195cm and weighing 100kg.

There is a cross-shaped scar on his face, a mark from his past fight with Aoshi Shinomori.

Shikijou often appears shirtless, especially during fights, though he sometimes starts with clothes that later get torn off.

His main weapon is an enormous iron ball and chain, sometimes shown with spikes.

Shikijou is loud and bold, often using phrases like "Ore" or "Oresama" when talking about himself.

He is very confident in his strength and loves physical challenges.

He tries to recruit others to become stronger with secret Oniwabanshu medicines.

Shikijou enjoys a good fight and does not hesitate to challenge strong opponents.

He shows loyalty to Aoshi Shinomori and the Oniwabanshu.

Shikijou was born in November 1843 in Kagoshima Prefecture.

After being beaten by the 13-year-old Aoshi Shinomori during an investigation at Edo Castle, Shikijou joined the Oniwabanshu.

Joining the Oniwabanshu

Shikijou was originally a Satsuma Domain spy.

But during a mission at Edo Castle, he was beaten by a young Aoshi Shinomori, who gave him the scar on his face.

Impressed or inspired by Aoshi, Shikijou then joined the Oniwabanshu as a top bodyguard.

The Fight with Sagara Sanosuke

After Hannya was beaten by Kenshin Himura, Shikijou faced Sagara Sanosuke next.

He started the fight strong and even tried to convince Sanosuke to take the Oniwabanshu medicine, promising he would become even stronger than Shikijou.

But Sanosuke refused the offer.

In a tough battle, Sanosuke was finally able to knock Shikijou out with a powerful punch.

Both of them fainted, but later woke up and found themselves joining Kenshin Himura and friends, with Shikijou now lacking the will to fight.

Shikijou’s Sacrifice

Later on, when Aoshi Shinomori was attacked by Kanryuu Takeda’s machinegun, Shikijou stood together with Hannya and used his body to shield Aoshi.

He was killed in the fight, sacrificing his life to protect his leader.

Anime Differences

In the first anime series, Shikijou fights Sanosuke before Hannya and appears first when Megumi Takani is brought in.

He keeps his clothes on at first but rips them off as the fight gets serious.

Megumi is taken away by Beshimi after Shikijou loses.

In the second anime series, his story follows the original closely, but he often repeats the catchphrase "Nice" during fights.

He uses his iron ball and chain more as a weapon, and the fight with Sanosuke includes moves like the German Suplex and more dramatic attacks.

Shikijou is very loyal to Aoshi Shinomori and respects him deeply.

He works closely with the other Oniwabanshu members like Hannya and Beshimi.

He tries to win over Sagara Sanosuke, admiring his strength.

Shikijou’s muscles and body are drawn based on American superhero comics.

In the special edition volume 3, he’s even more muscular and beast-like.

His giant iron ball weapon gets bigger and has spikes in later appearances.
