Character Setting

Edit

Kenshin Himura is a gentle young man with a kind appearance, but he was once a legendary swordsman feared as "Battousai the Manslayer" during the Bakumatsu era. By the start of the story, he is 28 years old. Traveling with no destination, Kenshin has sworn never to kill again and wields a reverse-blade sword. He was once an assassin, carrying the burden and guilt of his violent past, which sometimes makes him emotionally unstable. His journey is one of atonement and searching for peace, but his old life often catches up to him. Kenshin is admired by those he helps and feared by those who remember his past.

Kenshin Himura is a slender, short-statured man with long red hair, tied in a low ponytail.

He has a large cross-shaped scar on his left cheek.

He has gentle, androgynous features—he is often mistaken for a girl due to his delicate face.

Kenshin is 158 cm tall and weighs 48 kg, which was average for his era.

His blood type is AB, and his birthday is June 20.

He is a Gemini.

He usually wears a traditional red kimono and hakama.

His special sword is a sakabatou, a reverse-blade sword.

Kenshin is calm, warm, and polite, always using formal language and ending sentences with "de gozaru."

He is gentle to everyone, especially women and the weak.

He believes in helping others and values peace.

Because of his past, Kenshin feels deep guilt and often undervalues his own life.

He sometimes returns to his old, ruthless personality in battle, especially when facing injustice.

Although serious, Kenshin can be lighthearted and relaxed around close friends like Sagara Sanosuke and Hajime Saitou.

He is not good at handling Megumi Takani's teasing or Kaoru Kamiya’s cooking, which he finds inedible.

His sense of responsibility and his wish to atone make him sometimes emotionally unstable.

Early Life

Kenshin was born as "Shinta," the child of a poor farming family in the Kansai region.

He lost both parents to cholera as a child and was sold to human traffickers.

While traveling, the group was attacked by bandits. Kenshin was saved by Hiko Seijuro, who saw his kindness and potential.

Hiko gave Kenshin his new name and began teaching him the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu sword style.

He performed graveside rituals for all who died, showing early compassion.

Becoming an Assassin

At 13, Kenshin was as strong as his master, Hiko Seijuro. Because of a difference in beliefs, they parted ways.

Katsura Kogorō recruited him as an assassin for the revolution.

Kenshin believed that killing a few could save many.

At only 14, he became the feared “Battousai the Manslayer,” performing many assassinations with unmatched skill and little hesitation.

Meeting Tomoe

During his time as an assassin, Kenshin met Tomoe Yukishiro, who influenced him to slow down his killing.

She was actually a spy, seeking revenge for her fiancé, whom Kenshin had killed.

They fell in love and lived together for a time, but Kenshin accidentally killed her in a setup by her handlers.

Her death deeply scarred him (literally and emotionally), and he vowed never to kill again.

Becoming a Wanderer

Kenshin left Kyoto, taking up the reverse-blade sword as a symbol of his promise to never kill.

He traveled Japan, helping people as a wandering swordsman.

For ten years, he avoided battles and became rusty with the sword.

Kenshin is a master of the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu sword style.

He is incredibly fast, agile, and can read his opponents’ moves.

While not particularly strong or tall, his skill and speed make him formidable.

He uses his sakabatou to fight without killing.

He often relies on reading his opponent’s moves, which can sometimes backfire if his opponent uses tricky moves or feints.

His most powerful technique is the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki, a super-fast battoujutsu strike.

After retraining with his old master, he grows even stronger by gaining the "will to live," helping surpass his old "manslayer" self.

  • Kaoru Kamiya: The owner of Kamiya Dojo; she gives Kenshin a home, and they become close. Kenshin eventually marries her.
  • Kenji Himura: Kenshin’s son with Kaoru.
  • Sagara Sanosuke: A close friend and fighting companion; their relationship is cheerful and sometimes mischievous.
  • Yahiko Myoujin: A young samurai-in-training who admires Kenshin.
  • Megumi Takani: A doctor who respects Kenshin.
  • Aoshi Shinomori and Misao Makimachi: Former enemies who become allies.
  • Enishi Yukishiro: Tomoe’s younger brother, who becomes Kenshin’s enemy seeking revenge for Tomoe's death.
  • Hajime Saitou: Once a fierce enemy, now a complicated rival and reluctant ally.
  • Hiko Seijuro: Kenshin’s master, who taught him the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu.
  • Tomoe Yukishiro: Kenshin's late wife and the source of his cross-shaped scar; her death greatly impacts his life.

  • Kenshin's "Battousai" persona is based on the real-life historical figure, Kawakami Gensai—a short, delicate-looking but deadly assassin.
  • Kenshin’s delicate handwriting is a recurring joke; people instantly recognize letters from him due to his poor penmanship.
  • He was only 14 when he became an assassin.
  • Despite looking young, he is 28 at the start of the manga and anime, making him older than most shonen protagonists.
  • He invented the word "Giantism" in Japanese pop culture.
  • He sometimes acts more like a friend than a hero, especially in his interactions with Sanosuke and Saitou.
  • Kenshin was married once before to Tomoe, making him divorced/widowed before marrying Kaoru.

"I am a wanderer, a swordsman on a journey with no destination."

"A sword is a deadly weapon, and swordsmanship is the art of killing... no matter how pretty the words, that’s the truth. Kaoru, what you’re saying is something only someone who’s never soiled their hands can say—it’s naive nonsense."

"But I prefer Kaoru's naive nonsense over that harsh truth."

"I hope one day that nonsense can become the truth for the whole world."

Battousai Era

Kenshin becomes an assassin for the revolution at age 14, killing many important people with speed and skill.

He has a strict policy of being unseen by anyone but his targets.

He meets Tomoe, who is first an enemy but becomes his wife.

During a battle, Kenshin accidentally kills Tomoe, who was involved in a plot by the Tokugawa’s secret police.

Her death and her diary make him vow to never take another life.

Wanderer Era

He leaves his old life, refusing government offers for important roles, and travels as a wanderer to help people.

He avoids Kyoto, where his painful past remains.

Meeting the Tokyo Friends

In Tokyo, he meets Kaoru Kamiya and Yahiko Myoujin, starting to live at the Kamiya Dojo.

He fights and befriends Sagara Sanosuke, a former street fighter.

He discovers enemies from his past, like Jine Udou and Aoshi Shinomori, and battles to protect his friends.

He reunites and even clashes with Hajime Saitou, his old rival.

Kyoto Arc

Kenshin faces a new threat: Shishio Makoto, a brutal swordsman trying to overthrow the government.

He returns to Kyoto, meeting his master Hiko Seijuro again for retraining and learning the final Hiten Mitsurugi technique.

After deadly battles, he defeats Shishio in a burning ship.

Jinchuu (Human Punishment) Arc

Enishi Yukishiro, the brother of Tomoe, targets Kenshin for revenge.

Enishi’s skills and hatred nearly defeat Kenshin, but through the strength of his friends and his will to live, Kenshin overcomes his guilt and spares Enishi, breaking the cycle of vengeance.

Hokkaido Arc

Years later, Kenshin travels to Hokkaido with his family to seek Kaoru's missing father.

He faces new enemies and, though still skilled, his body is aging and weakening from the strain of his sword style.

He entrusts his sword to Yahiko and prepares for peaceful days ahead.

  • Kenshin’s speech style includes old-fashioned, formal phrases.
  • His one true oath is "Not to kill"—he sticks to using the reverse-blade sword to protect, not to destroy.
  • His story is about finding forgiveness for himself and making a future where kindness is stronger than violence.
