Character Setting

Edit

Cindy Campbell is a female character from the manga Squid Girl, a blonde ponytailed researcher from the American Extraterrestrial Life Countermeasure Research Institute who obsessively identifies Squid Girl as an alien and studies her.

Cindy Campbell is portrayed as a beautiful blonde woman, often described as busty in the anime, though the manga presents her less exaggeratedly.

She is voiced by Hitomi Nabatame, with Emma Kokubun credited for the English audio.

She is an investigator and researcher affiliated with the American Extraterrestrial Life Countermeasure Research Institute.

A brilliant academic, she graduated top of her class from M.I.T.

Cindy lives in a cave converted into a research base together with three fellow M.I.T. graduates: Harris, Clark, and Martin.

This trio is commonly known as the “Three Stooges Trio,” and the group spends its time trying to make contact with aliens and UFOs.

Around the Lemon Beach House, Cindy usually appears in a white bikini with pastel green stripes, a red hoodie, and beach sandals.

Her trademark look is her blonde ponytail, which gives her a bright and energetic presence.

When she visits the Aizawa household to teach English, she dresses much more conservatively.

On that occasion, she wears ordinary clothes with less skin exposure, lets her hair down, and sometimes appears in glasses and pants, prompting Eiko Aizawa to remark that she has “at least some common sense.”

Cindy is nearsighted and normally wears contact lenses.

Her alternate appearance with glasses emphasizes a calmer and more intellectual side.

Cindy has long held a deep admiration for extraterrestrials.

She is passionate about gathering information and taking direct action in pursuit of them.

Her fascination with aliens is so intense that she immediately classifies Squid Girl as an extraterrestrial life form.

She bases this conclusion on Squid Girl’s ten tentacles and her ability to spray a mysterious liquid, namely squid ink.

She is enthusiastic, active, and intelligent, but also extremely gullible when aliens are involved.

She is easily fooled by crude composite photos, a toy UFO made by the Three Stooges Trio, and even a rideable full-sized UFO they built themselves.

Cindy also has a lonely side.

She admits that no one besides the Three Stooges Trio ever believed in aliens, at least until she saw Goro Arashiyama panic at the sight of a toy UFO.

Because of this, she does not appear to have any real friends.

Even the Three Stooges Trio are considered merely “colleagues” or “companions,” not friends.

Cindy’s central role in the story is her relentless pursuit of Squid Girl as proof of alien existence.

After meeting her, Cindy becomes convinced that Squid Girl is not human because of her appearance and unusual physical abilities.

She completely ignores Squid Girl’s repeated insistence that she is not an alien.

Instead, Cindy repeatedly tries to force the identity onto her through research, persuasion, and outright coercion.

Her actions sometimes go too far.

She attempts to brainwash Squid Girl into accepting herself as an alien and even tries to drag her to the laboratory by force.

That brainwashing is eventually undone by Chizuru Aizawa in a memorable way.

Chizuru shows Squid Girl spiny lobster curry and says that if she were really an alien, she would not eat shrimp, snapping her back to normal.

Cindy refers to Squid Girl as “the Squid Alien.”

This nickname reflects both her fixation and her refusal to accept any other explanation.

Squid Girl

Cindy sees Squid Girl as the ultimate alien specimen and directs nearly all of her investigative energy toward her.

This makes Cindy one of the people who troubles Squid Girl the most.

Although her goal differs from that of Sanae Nagatsuki, both women share an unhealthy level of attachment to Squid Girl.

At times, they even cooperate in order to get closer to her.

Naturally, Squid Girl finds both of them annoying.

To her, Cindy and Sanae are equally troublesome presences.

Sanae Nagatsuki

Cindy and Sanae are connected by their abnormal devotion to Squid Girl.

Cindy wants to prove Squid Girl is an alien, while Sanae’s motives are more emotional and personal.

Even so, the two occasionally join forces.

Their shared obsession makes them surprisingly compatible in schemes involving Squid Girl.

Eiko Aizawa and the Aizawa Family

Cindy is a familiar face around the Lemon Beach House and often interacts with the Aizawa family.

She once visits the Aizawa home to teach English to Takeru Aizawa.

Despite her strange behavior in most situations, she shows more restraint in a teaching setting.

This leads Eiko Aizawa to acknowledge that Cindy does possess basic social sense.

Cindy is reluctant about teaching work, however.

She also dislikes serving as an interpreter because she feels the responsibility is too heavy.

The Three Stooges Trio

Harris, Clark, and Martin are her fellow researchers and cave-mates.

All three are fellow M.I.T. graduates, but they are often treated as fools because of their absurd inventions and poor judgment.

Cindy functions as the de facto leader or handler of the group.

Eiko Aizawa effectively sees her as the person in charge of them, almost like their keeper.

Even so, Cindy does not regard them as friends.

They are simply work partners in her eyes.

Cindy frequently appears near the Lemon Beach House.

However, aside from approaching Squid Girl or the people connected to the beach house, she is rarely shown doing much actual investigation.

She even describes herself as bored.

At one point, she says that since she is there for a summer vacation, being idle is not really a problem.

Later, she nearly forgets that her original reason for coming to Lemon was to investigate Squid Girl.

This says a lot about how loosely structured her “research” can be.

When the Lemon Beach House is short on help, Cindy occasionally works there as extra staff.

This gives her a more practical role in the daily life of the setting.

She also holds a Japanese license for a motorized scooter.

That small detail adds to the impression that she has adapted to everyday life in Japan more than she might admit.

Cindy is highly educated and academically exceptional.

Graduating first in her class from M.I.T. marks her as one of the most accomplished characters intellectually.

At the same time, she is surprisingly easy to deceive.

Her longing to believe in aliens often overrides her critical thinking.

This contrast defines much of her comedy.

She can be brilliant in theory yet absurdly naïve in practice.

Another contradiction lies in her identity.

She claims to be American, but she speaks even simple English greetings uncertainly, sometimes as if guessing at them.

This suggests that English may not actually be her first language.

When she goes to teach English at the Aizawa house, she even prepares in advance.

Cindy brings a science-fiction flavor to Squid Girl by treating the title character as a possible extraterrestrial instead of a sea-based invader.

Her alien research creates many of the series’ more absurd investigative and pseudo-scientific comedy scenes.

She also serves as a foil to more grounded characters.

Her extreme behavior makes ordinary people like Eiko Aizawa seem even more practical by comparison.

Although often ridiculous, Cindy is not malicious at heart.

She is driven by wonder, loneliness, and an almost childlike desire to prove that aliens really exist.

That mix of brilliance, foolishness, and sincerity makes her memorable.

She is both a danger to Squid Girl’s peace and one of the series’ most entertaining eccentrics.
