He married Shelley Mel Britannia, who was the daughter of Emperor Charles before his coronation.

Because of Shelley's efforts, when Britannia took over Japan, Hokkaido was made a Special Administrative Zone.

This meant it was the only area in Area 11 where Japanese people could live with some freedom.

Captured by Neo Britannia

In Year 3 of the Kowa Era, the Neo Britannian Empire suddenly attacked and captured Jugo Ko.

He was labeled a prisoner and sentenced to death.

Locked in a cell at the Sapporo Detention Center, Jugo Ko’s endurance and a friendly guard (who owed him a favor) afforded him small freedoms, like getting information and different food.

Instead of getting weaker, he actually gained a bit of weight in prison, which he joked about.

Meeting Ash

One day, Ash was put in the cell across from Jugo Ko as punishment for almost killing Noland von Lüneberg.

Ash was devastated by losing his younger brother, Nicole, and had lost the will to live.

Jugo Ko kept talking to Ash, helping him open up little by little. They came to trust and share their personal burdens with each other.

The Failed Escape and Jugo Ko’s Final Moments

When Kensei Kuroto led the resistance into action, Jugo Ko’s value to the Neo Britannians dropped since they no longer needed him to lure out rebels.

He was told his execution was coming.

Still, what he worried about most was the safety of his daughter Sakuya Sumeragi.

Ash promised to protect Sakuya, giving Jugo Ko hope and the courage to try escaping with help from a secret friend inside the prison.

But their escape was already discovered.

Jugo Ko’s helper was shot and killed. Jugo Ko was shot in the leg and couldn't run.

He accepted his fate, gave Ash a childhood picture of Sakuya, and asked him to look after her.

He made sure Ash escaped through the prison wall while Jugo Ko was then shot in the head by a senior guard.

His death was ultimately a sacrifice to let Ash live and fulfill his promise.

Ash blames himself, believing Jugo Ko died because Ash tried to escape.

This feeling shapes Ash’s actions afterward.
