Kaishuu Katsu
勝海舟(かつ かいしゅう), 胜海舟
Character Introduction
EditThe novel version Volume One "To the World of the Moon" and the anime version "Kaishuu Katsu Arc" feature him. A former retainer of the shogunate, he negotiated with Saigō Takamori to achieve the bloodless surrender of Edo Castle. He refers to himself as "oira." In the novel version, he remarked that Kenshin resembles Okada Izo, but it is depicted that he did not realize Kenshin was the legendary hitokiri Battousai (in the anime version, he did realize it). In his youth, he was a master of the Jikishinkage-ryu style, but he adhered to pacifism throughout his life and never killed anyone. After resolving the incident, he managed to secure Shibata's release through his own efforts (and in the anime, Tetsuma's testimony also contributed), and in the anime, he later apologizes to him. The story suggests that he understood the convictions of top swordsmen like Kenshin as Battousai and Saito.
