Like Daigorou, he was also a disciple of Kaishuu Katsu and a member of the prestigious Ookubo family, serving as an elite government official. However, behind the scenes, he made contact with Kurenai Aoi, manipulated them with false information, and plotted to steal the Tokugawa hidden gold. Troubled by his conscience, he feared that Daigorou and Itsuko would discover the truth, so he continued to scheme in secret. He had studied abroad in England, where he learned Western fencing. After the destruction of Kurenai Aoi, he attempted to obtain the hidden gold from Kaishuu Katsu, but was confronted and defeated by Kenshin Himura. In the novels, after being defeated by Kenshin, he uses his rapier to slit his own throat and ends his life. However, in the anime, he is persuaded by Daigorou, reforms himself, and turns himself in to the police, thus surviving. It is also explained that he gave testimony to the authorities denying any connection between himself and Kurenai Aoi.
