Character Setting

Edit

Mikoto Yamato is a human adventurer from the Far East, originally a child of the imperial-state Familia “Court,” later a member of the Takemikazuchi Familia and temporarily converted to the Hestia Familia in the light novel and anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?.

She is a level 2, 16‑year‑old swordswoman with a serious, dutiful personality, famed for her gravity magic and her painful yet cool alias “Zetsuei” (Absolute Shadow).

Name: Mikoto Yamato

Age: 16

Gender: Female

Race: Human

Height: 157 cm

Occupation: Adventurer

Origin: Far Eastern region (orphan from a Far Eastern nation)

Former Affiliation: Takemikazuchi Familia

Current Affiliation: Hestia Familia (conversion for one year during the War Game arc)

Level: 2 (as of main story volume 18)

Alias (Second Name): Absolute Shadow (often stylized as “Zetsuei”)

Voice Actress (Anime): Chinatsu Akasaki

Mikoto is introduced as a member of the Takemikazuchi Familia, a small group of Far Eastern orphans raised together by the war god Takemikazuchi.

Before that, she belonged to the Far Eastern, nation-backed Familia known as the “Court,” from which she eventually ended up under Takemikazuchi’s care.

She is an earnest warrior who uses Far Eastern swordsmanship and gravity magic in battle.

Her alias “Absolute Shadow” is considered hilariously edgy by the gods but cool and admirable by people in the mortal world, and Mikoto herself takes pride in it.

During the War Game between the Hestia Familia and the Apollo Familia, Mikoto volunteers to convert to the Hestia Familia for one year to repay Bell Cranel for his kindness.

Thanks to her versatile skills—detection, magic, and multi-weapon combat—she becomes one of the Hestia Familia’s key all‑rounders both in the Dungeon and in conflicts between Familias.

Mikoto is extremely serious, honest, and loyal, with a strong sense of duty and justice.

She is polite to everyone, despises underhanded methods, and is terrible at lying or hiding things.

Like Bell Cranel, she cannot keep secrets well.

This leads to comical moments, such as when she accidentally blurts out Hestia’s massive debts in front of would‑be recruits, ruining a Hestia Familia recruitment opportunity.

She has a strong self‑sacrificing streak and will not hesitate to risk her own life if it can open a path for her comrades.

Her resolve and willingness to throw herself into danger for others are so impressive that even Ottar, the strongest adventurer in the city, praises her.

Mikoto is also deeply guilt‑driven and hates the idea of abandoning people she could help.

Her line “I do not want to abandon them this time” encapsulates her determination to never again leave companions to die.

Mikoto is a Far Eastern–style beauty with long black hair tied into a single ponytail and striking violet eyes.

She presents a traditional “yamato nadeshiko” look—refined, neat, and dignified.

Although she wraps her chest with bandages to keep it restrained for practicality, she has a very good figure.

Her overall appearance is feminine and elegant, contrasting with her hard training and martial lifestyle.

Mikoto is an orphan from the Far East who lost her parents at an early age.

She grew up in poverty and hardship, eventually coming under the god Takemikazuchi’s care, where she lived like family alongside Ōka Kashima and Chigusa Hitachi.

In her childhood she met Haruhime Sanjouno, a fox girl of noble standing who once shared food with Mikoto and the other starving children despite the difference in their social status.

To Mikoto, Haruhime looked like a princess, and that kindness left a deep mark on her heart.

From then on, Mikoto revered Haruhime and vowed to become her hero, deciding to receive a god’s blessing so that she could protect Haruhime.

When Haruhime later joins the Hestia Familia, Mikoto comes to see Bell Cranel as the one who has inherited the role of Haruhime’s protector.

She also deeply respects Takemikazuchi as both a father figure and a man.

Her feelings gradually evolve from filial devotion into romantic affection, though Takemikazuchi is both a natural flirt and extremely dense, causing Mikoto constant internal frustration.

Takemikazuchi

Takemikazuchi is Mikoto’s foster parent, master, and former main god.

He raised her from childhood, trained her rigorously in martial arts, and shaped both her skills and her strict sense of honor.

Mikoto respects him as a father, yet over time also falls in love with him as a man.

Takemikazuchi, however, is oblivious to her feelings, and his natural lady‑killer tendencies often leave Mikoto exasperated.

Ōka Kashima and Chigusa Hitachi

Ōka and Chigusa are Mikoto’s long‑time comrades from the Takemikazuchi Familia.

All three grew up together as orphans under Takemikazuchi, and they share a deep sibling‑like bond.

Even after Mikoto’s temporary conversion to the Hestia Familia, she continues to maintain close ties and cooperative relations with them.

Their shared past, including harsh training and tight finances, strongly shapes Mikoto’s sense of family and loyalty.

Haruhime Sanjouno

Haruhime Sanjouno is Mikoto’s childhood friend and the “princess” of her memories.

Haruhime once shared food with Mikoto and the other starving children, becoming an irreplaceable benefactor in Mikoto’s eyes.

Mikoto admired Haruhime like a storybook princess and once wholeheartedly aspired to become the hero who would protect her.

In the present, they belong to the same faction and fight side by side.

Knowing that Haruhime has feelings for Bell Cranel, Mikoto acts as a supportive friend and actively cheers Haruhime on in her love.

Her own romantic attachment lies elsewhere, so she can help Haruhime without conflict.

Bell Cranel

Bell Cranel is Mikoto’s benefactor and the captain of the Hestia Familia she joins.

Mikoto first meets him under very bad circumstances linked to a monster horde, yet his forgiveness and kindness deeply impress her.

Unlike many other women around Bell, Mikoto already has an existing romantic interest—Takemikazuchi—before meeting him.

As a result she does not develop romantic feelings for Bell, but she respects him as a person and as a leader.

She evaluates Bell very highly, both in character and in potential.

Her line “I am glad that you are my captain, and that I was able to meet you” sums up her trust and gratitude.

First Encounter and Monster Offering Incident

Mikoto’s first major appearance occurs when she is exploring the Dungeon’s middle floors with the Takemikazuchi Familia.

During this expedition, Chigusa Hitachi is severely injured, forcing the party to retreat.

On Ōka Kashima’s suggestion, they use a “monster offering” tactic, luring the pursuing monsters toward an unrelated party to shake off the pursuit.

By bad luck, the party used as the decoy happens to be Bell Cranel’s group.

Mikoto is wracked with guilt over this tactic and cannot accept abandoning those strangers.

She heads out to rescue Bell’s party, and when she finds them alive, she drops to her knees in a full apology, begging forgiveness.

Bell forgives her, which moves Mikoto deeply.

From then on, she feels a strong sense of obligation and begins cooperating with Bell and the Hestia Familia whenever she can.

War Game and Conversion to the Hestia Familia

When the Apollo Familia challenges the Hestia Familia to a War Game, the disparity in strength is enormous.

To support Bell and repay her debt, Mikoto volunteers to convert from the Takemikazuchi Familia to the Hestia Familia for one year.

Takemikazuchi accepts her decision, and the conversion is finalized.

During the War Game, Mikoto uses her gravity magic Futsonomitatama to hold back multiple enemies, playing a critical role in the battle.

After the Hestia Familia wins and gains a new home, Mikoto’s strong love of baths influences the design of the residence.

An Eastern‑style cypress bath is installed specifically to satisfy her wishes, highlighting how important her presence is within the group.

Rescue of Haruhime

When Mikoto discovers that Haruhime Sanjouno has become a courtesan in the pleasure quarter, under the control of the Ishtar Familia, she is devastated.

She joins forces with Bell to carry out a rescue mission.

During the ritual where Haruhime is to be sacrificed, Mikoto engages an enemy level 3 adventurer named Samira.

Despite the gap in their status, Mikoto fights desperately, eventually deciding to self‑destruct in an attempt to take Samira down with her.

She uses her own magic to trap both herself and the enemy, sacrificing her safety to ensure Haruhime’s salvation.

This nearly kills her, but Ottarlater finds her and saves her life by giving her an elixir.

Goddess Festival Incident and Freya’s Charm

During the three‑day Goddess Festival, Mikoto participates in the search for Syr Flover along with the others.

However, the first‑class adventurers of the Freya Familia, acting under Freya’s orders, suddenly ambush them.

Caught off guard before she can fully prepare for battle, Mikoto is struck by the massive hammer of Dvalin, one of the Gulliver Brothers, and is knocked out of the fight.

In the anime adaptation, she manages to draw her sword after sensing the killing intent but is quickly defeated.

Freya then casts her charm across the entire city, erasing the memories of the attack.

Under the effect of this large‑scale charm, Mikoto forgets the ambush and perceives the “Freya’s Familia” version of Bell as an enemy, becoming wary and even hostile toward him.

When Freya’s charm is finally lifted, Mikoto regains her memories.

The realization that she treated Bell harshly under that influence fills her with deep guilt and self‑loathing, and she rushes off to be by his side again.

Faction War and Large‑Scale Alliance Battle

During the “Faction War” (a large‑scale conflict involving multiple Familias against the Freya Familia), Mikoto and Ōka Kashima serve as part of the scouting unit for the alliance.

The enemy tactician Hedin Selland manipulates the situation, causing the alliance to waste most of their Crozzo magic swords, turning the battle against them.

Mikoto’s group attempts to regroup with Tsubaki Collbrande’s central forces alongside Aisha Belka and others.

The Gulliver Brothers appear and push them into a desperate situation, but Naaza Erisuis avoids wasting magic swords, allowing them to receive crucial reinforcements in the form of extra Crozzo blades.

As the battle develops, Ryuu Lion unexpectedly joins, and the staff of the pub “The Hostess of Fertility,” including Lunoire (Renard Lunoa), arrive as backup.

With these reinforcements, a path to victory begins to appear.

Following Liliruca Arde’s instructions, Mikoto uses Futsonomitatama to pin down the Gulliver Brothers within a heavy gravity field.

Naaza then casts her weakening magic Darv Daol, heavily reducing the brothers’ status, allowing Mikoto to defeat the youngest brother, Bering, with her iai technique “Zekka.”

However, Allen Fromel soon unleashes his high‑speed magic Glarinaze Fromel.

The overwhelming blast sends Mikoto and Aisha flying, rendering them unable to continue fighting.

Loki Familia Rescue Operation

In the large operation to rescue the Loki Familia from severe danger in the Dungeon, Mikoto takes part in the “Defense Unit.”

She descends into the Dungeon alongside the Takemikazuchi Familia (minus Mikoto, who is already present) and the students of the Baldr Class, including the third squad and Luke Faul’s seventh squad.

On the 17th floor, they confront and defeat a Goliath.

After this hard‑fought victory, they see Bell Cranel and the main “Progression Unit” pass through the floor and cheer them on, sending Bell off with encouragement for the even heavier battles ahead.

Mikoto is primarily a swordswoman who specializes in Eastern‑style blade techniques, but she is also an all‑rounder trained in many forms of combat.

Thanks to Takemikazuchi’s training, she handles not only swords but also spears, shuriken, and unarmed martial arts with competent skill.

She has two major combat styles.

The first is the straightforward “warrior” style that matches her honest spirit, focusing on direct swordplay and clean combat.

The second is the “ninja” style Takemikazuchi taught her, which uses every available trick and technique to achieve the objective.

Although this runs against her upright nature, Mikoto is willing to adopt this ruthless style when it is necessary to protect those she cares about.

By the time she appears in the main story, she has already ranked up to level 2.

Her status values are approaching the upper middle range for her level, making her a solid mid‑tier adventurer.

Her detection skills and powerful gravity magic allow her to contribute both in dungeon crawling and in battles against monsters and other adventurers.

After witnessing Ryuu Lion’s fight against the Black Goliath on the 18th floor, Mikoto secretly sets Ryuu as her personal goal and role model.

Notable Combat Techniques

Summer Moon Kick (Somersault)

This is essentially a somersault kick.

Mikoto’s version is powerful enough to shatter the fangs of an Aqua Serpent, a dangerous monster.

Zekka (Absolute Blossom)

Zekka is an iai strike performed with the long blade “Harusame.”

The name is taken directly from her alias “Absolute Shadow,” much to Takemikazuchi’s quiet dismay.

With this technique she has sliced a massive lower‑floor monster called a Crystalos Urchin in half.

It is one of her signature finishing moves.

Mikazuchi (Happy Throw / Frankensteiner)

This move, also jokingly called the “Happy Throw,” is a wrestling‑style technique similar to a Frankensteiner.

Mikoto clamps the opponent’s head between her thighs and flips them, slamming their skull directly into the ground.

It is one of the few techniques that only Mikoto managed to fully master during training with Takemikazuchi.

The move is extremely strong but embarrassing, as it inevitably exposes her underwear very close to the opponent’s face—something that later earns Takemikazuchi a scolding from the goddess Tsukuyomi for teaching it.

In one comedy‑tinged moment, Bell Cranel serves as the “test subject” on whom she demonstrates this throw.

This scene underscores both Mikoto’s combat prowess and the series’ playful fanservice.

Level: 2 (as of the main story volume 18)

Basic Abilities:

Strength: F 319

Endurance: F 308

Dexterity: F 389

Agility: F 341

Magic: H 170

Development Ability:

Abnormal Resistance: I (resistance to status ailments and abnormal conditions)

Skills

Yatano Black Bird

This is a detection‑type skill specialized for monsters.

Mikoto can sense monsters within a certain range, as long as she has previously encountered that type.

It cannot detect monsters she has never met, and it cannot be fooled by concealment or stealth abilities.

Because it also recognizes “Xenos” (intelligent monsters) as monsters, it works on them as well.

The range and precision of this skill depend on Mikoto’s status and physical and mental condition.

Activating the skill consumes her mind (mental energy).

Yatano White Bird

This is a detection skill that senses fellow children of the same deity.

Mikoto can locate allies who share her main god’s blessing anywhere within range.

The information about their positions appears directly in her mind, even beyond normal line of sight.

Like Yatano Black Bird, it cannot be fooled by concealment and consumes mental energy when used.

This skill can also detect the Hestia Knife, a living weapon that carries Hestia’s blessing and blood just like her Familia members.

This makes Mikoto uniquely suited to locate Bell’s legendary blade in emergencies.

Magic

Futsonomitatama

Name: Futsonomitatama

Type: Gravity / crushing magic

Effect: Wide‑area gravity field and heavy pressure barrier

Chant (conceptual translation):

“O awe‑inspiring war god who shatters all things, guide me from your noble heavens.

Grant this small body your towering divine power.

Save with purifying light, strike with exorcising blade.

Sweep with a sword of peace, smite with a holy spirit blade.

Now, by the name of my life, I summon you.

Descend from the heavens and rule the earth — Divine Martial Subjugation.”

When activated, a massive blade of light appears overhead, and multiple concentric circles form on the ground.

The light sword then plunges into the center, generating a dome‑shaped gravity barrier with a maximum radius of about 50 meters.

Everything inside the dome is crushed and pinned down by immense pressure.

Because the effect is extremely wide and powerful, Takemikazuchi strictly forbids Mikoto from using it carelessly, especially in the confined spaces of the Dungeon.

Futsonomitatama is powerful enough to temporarily immobilize even floor boss‑class monsters.

It has proven effective against foes like the Black Goliath and the monster Amphisbaina, both roughly equivalent to level 5 in strength.

In the spin‑off Sword Oratoria, during the final battle against Enyo in the “Tale of Frenzy,” Mikoto also uses this magic defensively.

She employs the heavy gravity to drag the beam attacks of a “demi‑spirit” down into the ground, neutralizing them before they can annihilate her allies.

Unmanifested Skill

After returning from a major Dungeon expedition, one more skill becomes eligible to manifest on Mikoto’s status.

However, Hestia intentionally prevents it from appearing, suspecting it to be a dangerous self‑destruction‑type skill.

Mikoto has repeatedly used her gravity magic in ways that trap both enemies and herself, willingly sacrificing her own safety to halt powerful foes.

It is heavily implied that this new skill would enhance or formalize that suicidal combat style, making it too risky for Hestia to allow.

Shinonome

Shinonome is Mikoto’s first sword, a katana she uses from her early adventuring days.

It is destroyed during the fierce battle against the Black Goliath on the 18th floor.

Zansetsu

Zansetsu is a “bargain” katana Mikoto discovers on the eighth floor of the Babel tower’s tenant market.

It is the work of a lower‑rank smith from the Hephaistos Familia and costs 14,400 valis.

Zansetsu serves as a temporary replacement after Shinonome breaks.

However, it is later snapped by a powerful kick from Aisha Belka, forcing Mikoto to seek a new main weapon.

Chizan

Chizan is one of a pair of twin blades known together as “Male and Female as One,” gifted to Mikoto by Takemikazuchi when she converts to the Hestia Familia.

It is a short sword of excellent quality, symbolizing their bond.

The matching blade remains with Takemikazuchi himself as a sign of their continuing connection despite the conversion.

Chizan carries strong emotional value for Mikoto in addition to its combat usefulness.

Kotetsu

Kotetsu is a katana forged specifically for Mikoto by Welf Crozzo.

The blade is made from a composite metal combining the fangs of a monster called the Raiger Fang with a lower‑floor ore known as Nosteel (black silver steel).

Welf, notorious for his terrible naming sense, originally wants to call the sword “Torajiro” (something close to “Stripy Tiger”).

Mikoto desperately protests, and the blade is instead named Kotetsu, a more dignified, traditional sword name that she can actually live with.

Harusame and Other Weapons

On expeditions, Mikoto also carries a long blade named Harusame, whose edge bears a flame‑cloud pattern.

She uses this sword for her powerful iai technique Zekka.

She further equips multiple throwing weapons such as kunai, including a set named Akaya.

These tools support her “ninja”‑style tactics when stealth or ranged attacks are needed.

Mikoto is a devoted bath enthusiast and especially loves hot springs.

Her obsession is so strong that, after the War Game, the Hestia Familia’s new home is built with a Far Eastern‑style cypress bath specifically for her.

In spin‑off episodes such as the hot‑spring‑focused OVA and mobile games like Memoria Freese and Battle Chronicle, this trait is taken to humorous extremes.

She performs bizarre “rituals” before entering baths or even embarks on dungeon explorations just to find hot springs, to the bemusement of those around her.

She is also an excellent cook and often takes charge of meal preparation.

Whenever it is her turn to cook, her comrades are delighted, and her food is widely praised.

Mikoto can prepare most dishes from her homeland and quickly masters new recipes after tasting them once and seeing the recipe.

When she ends up working at the Hostess of Fertility, she is immediately recognized as an asset due to her efficient workflow and adaptability in the kitchen.

She has a surprising knack for drawing and creative work as well.

In a Memoria Freese event titled “Creator’s Giga Crisis,” Mikoto becomes famous in a short time as one of the city’s top manga artists, showcasing her many hidden talents beyond the sword and spell.

In daily life, Mikoto’s blend of earnestness, domestic skill, and occasional bath‑related madness makes her both reliable and endearingly eccentric.
