Character Setting

Edit

Wiene is a female Vivre (dragon girl) and a Xenos, an intelligent monster, who serves as the first younger heroine and protected figure for Bell Cranel in the light novel series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?.

Name: Wiene

Gender: Female

Race: Vivre (dragon girl)

Affiliation: Xenos; closely associated with the Hestia Familia

Age: 0 (newborn at first appearance)

Height: About 130 cels (anime version); about 150 cels (light novel version)

Level: Approximately Level 2 initially → approximately Level 5 by later volumes (estimated)

First Major Arc: Xenos Arc (Part Three of the main story)

Voice Actress (anime): Rina Hidaka

Wiene is a rare Vivre, a dragon-type monster that appears in the middle floors of the Dungeon, but unlike typical Vivres she has a human-like lower body with legs instead of a serpentine tail.

She is one of the Xenos, monsters born with intelligence and human-like hearts, and is the very first Xenos Bell Cranel meets, making her the central heroine of the Xenos storyline.

Although a monster, Wiene can speak, think, and feel just like a human, which brings her into direct conflict with a world that sees monsters only as enemies.

Her relationship with Bell and the Hestia Familia becomes the emotional core of the Xenos Arc, exploring coexistence between humans and monsters.

Wiene has long blue hair, amber eyes, and pale blue-white skin, giving her a striking and slightly otherworldly beauty.

Her facial features are well-formed and elegant, matching the general tendency for female-type Xenos to have attractive human-like faces.

In the center of her forehead is a gem known as the “Tear of the Vivre,” a distinctive crystal embedded in her skin.

She also has sharp claws, but because they are dangerously sharp, Welf Crozzo files them down to make them more rounded and safer to use.

Her body overall resembles that of a young human girl, emphasizing her childlike impression.

When her emotions surge, she can manifest wings, emphasizing her dragon nature and making her look even more like a mythical being.

In the original monster classification, a Vivre usually has a snake-like lower body instead of legs.

Wiene is unusual because she was born with a human-like lower body, setting her apart from standard Vivres and hinting that she is a special existence among the Xenos.

In the light novel, her height is described as around 150 cels, while in the anime she is portrayed as around 130 cels.

Because anime Wiene is shorter than Hestia (about 140 cels), her design there emphasizes a smaller, more childlike impression.

Because Wiene was just born when she appears in the story, she is pure, innocent, and very curious about the world.

She behaves like a young child, reacting straightforwardly to everything she sees, whether it is wonder, fear, or joy.

She has a gentle and compassionate heart and cannot ignore someone who is hurt or in danger right in front of her.

This instinct leads her to help humans even though they fear and attack her as a monster.

Wiene treasures the Hestia Familia members who accept her despite her being a monster, seeing their home, the “Hearthfire Manor,” as a safe haven.

She is especially attached to Bell Cranel and Haruhime Sanjouno, treating them almost like parents or caregivers who guide and protect her.

Over time, inspired by Bell’s kindness and strength, Wiene develops a strong desire not only to be protected but also to protect others.

She becomes willing to endure fear, hatred, and even bodily harm if it means helping someone important to her or repaying the kindness she has received.

First Meeting and Shelter with Hestia Familia

Soon after her birth, Wiene finds herself attacked by both adventurers and other monsters without understanding why.

Terrified and confused, she flees through the Dungeon until Bell Cranel discovers her and chooses to protect her instead of killing her.

Bell hides Wiene with the Hestia Familia, sheltering her at the Hearthfire Manor.

At first, most of the familia members are wary of her because she is a monster, even if she can talk.

However, as they spend time together, Wiene’s innocence, vulnerability, and earnest affection gradually melt their suspicions.

They come to see her not as a nameless monster but as a unique girl who happens to be a monster.

Despite that, Wiene overhears Liliruca Arde arguing that they should stop protecting her because she is still a monster and a danger to the familia.

Hurt and thinking she is causing trouble for everyone, Wiene impulsively runs away from the manor.

While wandering the city, she sees a child about to be crushed by cargo falling from a wagon.

Ignoring her own safety, she rushes in to save the child, only to be met with panic and hatred from the surrounding citizens, who see only a sudden “monster” attack.

The frightened crowd throws stones at her and hurls insults, completely unable to grasp that she just saved a child.

The Hestia Familia arrives in time to rescue Wiene, but she is deeply shocked to realize that, to people on the surface, she is something that “should not be with” Bell and the others.

Encounter with the Xenos

The Guild’s main god, Uranus, secretly protects the Xenos and is aware of Wiene’s existence.

Under his orders, the Hestia Familia receives a compulsory mission to head to the Xenos’ hideout deep on the 20th floor of the Dungeon.

There, Wiene meets others like herself—intelligent monsters known as Xenos—who can speak and feel like humans.

She encounters Lido, the lizardman who leads the Xenos, and Fels, Uranus’s mysterious right-hand magician.

Lido and Fels suggest that Wiene would be safer living among her own kind in the Dungeon rather than on the surface, where humans fear and hunt her.

After painful consideration, it is decided that Wiene will part ways with Bell and the Hestia Familia and stay with the Xenos in their hidden village.

This separation is heartbreaking for both Wiene and Bell, but it is presented as the best way to keep her safe.

Nevertheless, their connection remains strong, and they soon become entangled again through a sinister plot.

Kidnapping, Rampage, and Death

A group of adventurers from the Ikeros Familia, led by Dix Perdix, secretly hunts Xenos to sell them as rare merchandise.

Dix and his group successfully kidnap Wiene from the Xenos, planning to use her for their cruel schemes.

Through cursed equipment and manipulative tactics, Dix forces Wiene into a berserk state and drives her to rampage on the surface.

In this frenzied condition, she becomes a target for all adventurers in Orario, who see only a dangerous monster destroying the city.

During the chaos, Gran—one of the surviving members of the Ikeros Familia—throws a spear that pierces Wiene, dealing her a fatal wound.

As she lies dying, Wiene thanks Bell for saving her and expresses her affection for him, clearly showing how deeply she cares for him.

She dies in Bell’s arms, an event that almost breaks him emotionally.

However, Fels attempts a powerful resurrection magic known as “Dia Orpheos,” a spell that is normally almost impossible to succeed with.

Against all odds, the spell works, and Wiene miraculously returns to life.

Some in-story speculation suggests that Bell’s Development Ability “Luck” may have played a role in making this resurrection succeed.

Hiding and Growth After Resurrection

After her revival, Wiene cannot simply walk the surface freely, since many adventurers witnessed her rampage and know her as a dangerous monster.

She goes into hiding with some of her fellow Xenos, aiming to return to the Dungeon with the help of the Hestia Familia and allied supporters.

The experience of death and rebirth, and seeing how far Bell went to protect her, leaves a deep mark on Wiene.

She becomes more determined to grow stronger, not just physically but emotionally, so she can stand beside Bell rather than only behind him.

When Lido laments that the Xenos are always being protected and causing trouble for Bell’s group, Wiene counters with a new, mature resolve.

She tells him that someday they will repay Bell and the others for all the help they have received, showing her newfound positivity and sense of responsibility.

Later, when a collapsing building threatens to crush Ryuu Lion’s companion Lou, Wiene rushes in to save her, fully aware that exposing herself will cause fear and hostility again.

She puts Lou’s life above her own safety, choosing to act even if she must face renewed hatred from those who see her as nothing more than a monster.

This heroic act is witnessed by Ouka Kashima, Chigusa Hitachi, and Tiona Hiryute.

Lou realizes that Wiene saved her, and Tiona senses clearly that Wiene is not just a simple monster to be slain, choosing to let her go rather than kill her.

Facing Ais Wallenstein and Choosing Her Own Path

At one point, Bell confronts Ais Wallenstein to protect Wiene, fighting desperately even though he is outmatched.

He sends Wiene away to keep her safe, but she cannot bear to see Bell hurt on her behalf yet again.

Wiene returns to stand between Bell and Ais, openly declaring her honest wish to stay with Bell.

To show she is serious, she goes so far as to display a willingness to tear off her own claws and wings—symbolically rejecting her monstrous nature.

Ais, who sees in Wiene echoes of her own painful past, is deeply moved by this determination and vulnerability.

In the end, Ais chooses to spare Wiene and let her go, allowing her and her companions to safely return to the Dungeon.

This moment marks a turning point, both for Wiene’s resolve and for the possibility of understanding between powerful adventurers and the Xenos.

Wiene is no longer just someone to protect; she becomes an active agent in her own fate.

Deeper Dungeon Adventures and Later Appearances

In the main series Volume 14, when Bell is cast down to the Deep Floors of the Dungeon, Wiene joins Lido and the other Xenos in the rescue operation.

She helps search for Bell in the deadly Deep Floors and is reunited with the Hestia Familia during this crisis.

Her participation underscores that she now moves as an ally and comrade alongside adventurers, not merely a sheltered ward.

Wiene’s growth becomes more visible with each later appearance in the series.

In the Sword Oratoria side story, she even joins the Knossos conquest operation.

This is a major campaign against the underground labyrinth controlled by the evil factions, and Wiene chooses to participate as a way to repay the surface for the help she and her fellow Xenos received.

During the mission to rescue the Loki Familia in the Deep Floors, Wiene takes on the role of a frontline fighter.

Using her tough dragon body, she acts as a tank, shielding allies and enduring heavy attacks in one of the most dangerous regions of the Dungeon.

Wiene’s nature as a dragon-type monster gives her a high baseline of physical ability, even though she is gentle and not naturally inclined toward combat.

Early on, her power is considered roughly equivalent to that of a Level 2 adventurer.

Her fellow Xenos estimate that she would not fall behind against monsters around the 19th floor of the Dungeon.

This is impressive, given her young age and relative inexperience.

In the mobile game spin-off event “Labyrinth’s White Darkness (Whiteout),” Wiene, under Liliruca Arde’s command, single-handedly defeats a group of lower-ranking members of the Evilus faction.

This battle shows that, when directed, she can overwhelm human opponents even outside Bell’s direct protection.

By the time of Volume 21, after sustained training and consuming monster crystals, Wiene’s combat ability has increased dramatically.

She reaches a point where she can defeat a remnant of a spirit, a creature equivalent to a Level 5 adventurer, known as Samos Trakia.

Beyond raw strength, Wiene possesses extremely sharp senses, including sight, hearing, and intuition.

In this aspect, she surpasses even many older and more experienced Xenos, making her invaluable for detecting anomalies and hidden threats.

These keen senses are frequently relied upon by her companions, particularly in dangerous or unfamiliar parts of the Dungeon.

They contribute to her role as both scout and warning system, complementing her growing defensive and offensive capabilities.

Bell Cranel

Bell is the first person to show Wiene kindness, protecting her instead of killing her when they meet.

For Wiene, Bell is a savior, parental figure, and someone she admires deeply.

She develops clear romantic and emotional affection for Bell as the story progresses.

His bravery and consideration inspire her to become someone who can stand beside him and help others, even if she is feared for being a monster.

Haruhime Sanjouno

Haruhime takes a very gentle, nurturing approach toward Wiene, much like an older sister or mother.

Because of this, Wiene quickly grows attached to her and relies on her emotional support.

Haruhime also shares Bell’s love of heroic tales and legends.

She is the only one who immediately recognizes the origin of Wiene’s intended longer name from a myth about a spirit with wings of light.

Hestia Familia

Although initially wary, the Hestia Familia members gradually accept Wiene into their daily lives.

They share meals with her, play with her, and come to see her as part of their extended family.

Their initial fear—based on the belief that monsters and humans cannot coexist—slowly transforms into genuine affection and a willingness to risk their lives for her.

Wiene, in turn, becomes determined to repay their trust instead of merely being the protected child.

Xenos (Lido and Others)

Among the Xenos, Wiene is both a little sister and a symbol of hope.

Lido, in particular, treats her with great care and worries deeply about the danger she faces on the surface.

The Xenos community becomes her second family, teaching her survival in the Dungeon and giving her a place where she is not hated for being a monster.

Her choices and bravery later inspire them to act more openly for coexistence with humans.

Ais Wallenstein and Other Adventurers

Wiene’s confrontation with Ais Wallenstein becomes a crucial emotional moment.

Instead of just being an enemy or objective, Wiene touches Ais’s heart through her sincerity and willingness to suffer for Bell.

Tiona Hiryute also witnesses Wiene’s compassion when she saves Lou from a collapsing building.

This leads Tiona to see Wiene as more than a monster and to spare her life, hinting at a slow shift in how some adventurers view the Xenos.

Bell originally considered naming her “Wilyujine,” a long and fancy name.

Others teased him that it sounded too pretentious and cumbersome, so he shortened it to “Wiene.”

The name’s source is a winged spirit of light named “Melryuzine” from a myth about a marriage between a human and a spirit.

Haruhime, who loves heroic legends as much as Bell does, is the only one who immediately notices this reference.

According to the author, the mythic inspiration behind the “Melryuzine” figure ultimately traces back to the legend of “Melusine.”

This layered reference fits Wiene’s nature as a half-human-like, half-supernatural being caught between two worlds.

Regarding her height, there is a notable difference between media.

The light novel describes her as about 150 cels tall, while the anime portrays her as about 130 cels, making her visibly smaller than Hestia and emphasizing her childlike appearance even more.
