He highly valued Akashi among the Generation of Miracles and appointed him as his successor. This decision was also influenced by the fact that his father was seriously ill and hospitalized at the time.

He is an excellent PF with both speed and power, and was regarded as the number one player in middle school before the Generation of Miracles rose to prominence. With his passionate personality, he led the eccentric Generation of Miracles through his play and leadership (he is skilled in karate and even managed to subdue the problematic Haizaki by force). He also has a calm and thoughtful side, and he foresaw early on that the Generation of Miracles would surpass them. After stepping down as captain, he was converted to a backup SF for Kise and contributed to winning the national middle school championship twice in a row.

In the novel version, there is a scene where he teases Kuroko, and according to his classmates, "he usually has a fierce look, but surprisingly likes to play pranks." According to the author, "he was quite a mischievous kid in the past." Immediately after graduation, he went to the United States for his father's treatment, where he met and became close with Himuro.
