He is the maternal grandfather of the Kawamoto family, the father of Mikako Kawamoto and Misaki, and runs the traditional Japanese confectionery shop Mikazukidou. He loves his granddaughters dearly, especially indulging the youngest, Momo Kawamoto. Having lost his parents and younger brother during his childhood in the aftermath of the war and living earnestly ever since, he feels a strong connection to Rei Kiriyama, whose circumstances are similar to his own. He is also a fan of shogi and takes an active interest in Rei Kiriyama's matches.
Initially, his personal creed was "live as you wish and die as you wish," but after losing both his wife, Sai Kawamoto, and his daughter, he resolved to "cling to life no matter what" so that the three sisters would never be left alone standing in front of a golden folding screen. He now regularly has checkups with an old friend who is a doctor. In the story, he once collapses from arrhythmia and is hospitalized, but later makes a recovery and is discharged.
He harbors a deep resentment towards Seijirou, who ruined the lives of his daughter Mikako Kawamoto, wife Sai Kawamoto, and granddaughter Akari Kawamoto for selfish reasons, and this feeling persists to this day.
