Jun Suzuki is a female character from K-ON!, a bassist at Sakuragaoka High School and one of Ui Hirasawa and Azusa Nakano’s closest friends.
Name: Jun Suzuki
Gender: Female
School: Sakuragaoka High School
School record: First-year class unknown; second year, Class 1; third-year class unknown.
Instrument: Bass
Voice actor: Yoriko Nagata, who also voices Akane Sato and Nobuyo Nakajima.
Family: She has an older brother named Atsushi Suzuki, a university student and fellow bassist.
Jun is a friend of Ui Hirasawa from middle school, and the two later enter Sakuragaoka High School together.
She is affectionately called “Jun-chan”, and in the original manga she was initially referred to only by that nickname.
Her surname was first revealed in the anime adaptation.
Her name is thought to be derived from Jun Suzuki, the support bassist for the band the pillows.
Jun has dark brown, short hair usually tied into twin tails.
Her hair is extremely curly, to the point that she is reluctant to let it down in front of anyone outside her family.
In K-ON! highschool, it is said that the state of her “exploded” morning hair can reveal the day’s weather and humidity.
Her eye color differs by version: brown in the original manga and red in the anime.
When she was seen with her hair down while visiting her brother Atsushi, Azusa and the others mistook the situation for a date.
Jun is easygoing, relaxed, and very much does things at her own pace.
She can fall asleep unusually easily even at someone else’s house, which shows just how carefree she can be.
When she and Azusa stayed over at Ui’s house while Yui Hirasawa was away on a school trip, her laid-back behavior was so strong that Azusa complained about it.
At the same time, Jun is not simply careless; she sometimes shows a surprisingly detached and observant side.
In K-ON! highschool, she calmly advises Azusa and Ui when they are troubled.
When Azusa becomes anxious before a live performance, Jun wonders from a distance why she worries so much, saying that worrying will not let them perform beyond their own ability.
Before entering high school, Jun visits the Light Music Club with Ui.
However, the club’s atmosphere overwhelms her because its members are far too eccentric, so she decides not to join.
Despite that first impression, she gradually becomes fascinated by the club.
At the school festival, she blushes in surprise at how good Ho-kago Tea Time’s performance is.
She also appears to admire Mio Akiyama, especially because Mio is also a bassist.
As Jun hears more about the club from Ui and Azusa, her envy toward the Light Music Club grows.
She once says that the Light Music Club may be hard to join because its five members look so tightly bonded from the outside.
She also jokes that new students might be sensing something suspicious about the club.
Jun plays bass, partly because she admires Mio Akiyama and partly because of her older brother Atsushi’s influence.
Her bass is secondhand, and she saved up money to buy it herself.
Her instrument is a YAMAHA SBV-500, a model that ended production in 2006.
In the anime, Jun joins the Jazz Club instead of the Light Music Club.
The Jazz Club has fierce internal competition and multiple first-year juniors, which helps Jun develop a solid level of bass skill.
In the original manga, she does not initially belong to a club, but she is still shown to be able to play bass.
Jun is especially close to Ui Hirasawa and Azusa Nakano.
Together, the three are often called the second-year trio by fans.
She is in the same class as Azusa and gets along with her extremely well.
Jun has even entrusted her pet cat to Azusa before.
Yui Hirasawa also seems fond of Jun, Ui, and Azusa as a group in the original manga.
Because Jun often spends time with Ui and Azusa, she becomes more connected to the Light Music Club even before officially joining it.
When Azusa invites Jun to join the Light Music Club during their second year, Jun says she might join if Yui and the others graduate and Azusa is left alone.
After Yui, Mio Akiyama, Ritsu Tainaka, and Tsumugi Kotobuki graduate, Jun keeps that promise.
She joins the Light Music Club together with Ui.
In K-ON! highschool, she becomes an official member and rises to a central role alongside Azusa.
However, her reason for joining is not entirely pure musical ambition.
It is implied that she was also attracted by the club’s famous tea time.
In K-ON! highschool, Jun joins the new Light Music Club with Ui and supports Azusa as the club continues after the seniors’ graduation.
She often acts freely, such as saying she wants to play guitar when the members are deciding parts.
During training camp, she is also the first to suggest playing around.
Her relaxed attitude contrasts with Azusa’s seriousness, giving the new club a different rhythm from the original Ho-kago Tea Time era.
Jun has an older brother named Atsushi Suzuki.
She affectionately calls him “Acchan.”
Atsushi is a university student who also plays bass, and Jun often visits his apartment to learn from him.
Ui already seems to have known about Atsushi before Azusa and the others become aware of him.
When Azusa and the others once see Jun walking arm in arm with Atsushi while dressed up and wearing her hair down, they mistakenly think she is on a date with a boyfriend.
Jun has only a small role in the first season of the anime.
In the second season, her appearances increase sharply after she becomes a second-year student.
She even appears in the opening animation, which helped make her much more recognizable.
Because she makes a double peace sign in the first opening of the second season, some fans nicknamed her “Crab” after the motion.
After the second season aired, Jun’s popularity grew enough for her to receive a character song CD.
She also appears in the character introductions for the fourth volume of the original manga and on the official anime website.
From a minor friend character to a main figure in K-ON! highschool, Jun is one of the series’ biggest late bloomers.
