Commonly known as "Ushiwaka," Oikawa calls him "Ushiwaka-chan."

One of the top three ace spikers in the nation. A member of the Japan Youth team. Being left-handed is his most distinctive feature, and as the top player in the prefecture, he is overwhelmingly strong, earning the nickname "The Absolute King," and is referred to by the public as a "monster." However, his teammates call him the "ultimate volleyball idiot." He embodies Coach Washijō's philosophy with a playing style that combines power and height, earning about 40% of the team's points, but he also has a high level of other skills, such as efficient receiving actions, which even Hinata refers to.

His personality is serious, but he also has a naive side, which makes his straightforward remarks come off as sarcastic, often making others uncomfortable. Particularly, Oikawa despises him as the epitome of a "genius," but Ushijima himself highly regards him as a setter who brings out the maximum potential of the team.

On the first day of the Spring High preliminaries, he told Oikawa and Iwaizumi from Aoba Johsai, "This might be your last high school tournament, I wish you good luck," which they found annoyingly sincere. Before a match, he encouraged Goshiki (a first-year), who declared he would prove himself worthy of the ace title, by sincerely saying, "Do your best."

In the final stages of the Spring High final, he felt something "unusual" in Hinata, whom he had looked down upon as immature, and his player instincts exposed his hostility. During a practice match at the prefectural first-year select training camp, he found Hinata, who had crashed the camp to do menial tasks like ball retrieving, "creepy" as he intensely watched the court.

His father (living overseas) is a former professional volleyball player and an alumnus of the same school and club, who won a national championship during his time.

After graduating high school, he turned professional and joined the Schweiden Adlers, the same team as Kageyama, and was puzzled by a two-shot photo of Hinata and Oikawa shown to him by Kageyama, just like Kageyama was.
