Height: 178 cm; Weight: 65 kg. Born on September 26, 1830, and hails from Kagoshima Prefecture. His zodiac sign is Libra and his blood type is O. His special skill is political strategy, and his hobby is playing Go. He takes pride in his mustache. He served as the Home Minister in the Meiji government and refers to himself as “watashi.” He believed that Japan would require thirty years after the true completion of the Meiji Restoration to become a nation-state, and continued to be involved in politics even after the Satsuma Rebellion.
An acquaintance of Kenshin Himura since the Bakumatsu period, he was the one who informed Kenshin that Makoto Shishio was operating in Kyoto and requested Kenshin to head to Kyoto. However, on May 14, 1878, the very day he was scheduled to receive Kenshin’s reply, he was assassinated at Kioizaka by Soujirou Seta. Immediately afterward, his body was mutilated by Shimada Ichirō and his group (the historical assassins) who arrived by carriage, so that the murder would appear to be their handiwork.
He also appears in the novel adaptation “Kurokasa Arc.” In the rewrite included in "Kenshin Kaiden," his days as one of the two heroes of Satsuma with Saigo are depicted. Although often overshadowed by Saigo, he utilizes his less conspicuous presence to his advantage and is portrayed as a master strategist adept at employing various schemes.
