Informed Kenshin, an acquaintance since the end of the Edo period, that Shishio was scheming in Kyoto and requested him to head there. On May 14, 1878, the day he was supposed to hear Kenshin's response, he was assassinated by Seta Soujiro at Kioizaka. His body was subsequently mutilated by Ichiro Shimada and others (the historical assassins) to make it appear as their crime.
