Yako is a mischievous fox spirit who pretended to be a ghost haunting a school staircase, known as the "Misaki Stairs". She used scary rumors to try to recreate someone very dear she lost in the past. Her true form is a magical white fox, but she often appears as a mysterious woman. Yako’s story mixes creepy school legends with deep feelings of longing and loneliness.
Yako usually appears as a beautiful young woman dressed in a traditional Japanese kimono.
Her hair is parted in the middle, braided on the sides, and tied in a bun.
She has long eyelashes and pretty lips.
On her right ear, there are three small bells, and her hair resembles fox ears.
When Yako is in her true fox form, she is a small white fox with three bells on each ear and thin red makeup around her eyes.
There is an upside-down flame mark on her forehead.
She always has a large tail with three small will-o'-the-wisp shapes and one big will-o'-the-wisp following her.
Yako is usually playful and loves to cause a little trouble.
She does not like being treated like a normal animal and will bite if she feels disrespected.
Although she enjoys tricking people, she has a soft side and acts out of a deep sense of loneliness.
Yako was originally an Inari statue at a shrine near Kamome Academy.
Long ago, a kind man named Misaki used to visit her.
He taught her how to read and write and even gave her scissors for cutting hair.
Yako loved Misaki very much and looked forward to his visits.
One day, Misaki stopped coming.
She heard a rumor that he had died after falling down the shrine stairs, but since Yako is a spirit, she didn't understand what death meant.
After waiting a long time, Yako realized Misaki would never return.
Trying to ease her sadness, she decided to create a new "Misaki" by gathering pieces from people who wandered into the spirit world.
The Legend of the Misaki Stairs
There is a scary rule about the “Misaki Stairs” at Kamome Academy.
If someone steps on the fourth step of the B staircase near the art room, they will be dragged into the world of the dead.
Anyone taken becomes forgotten by people in the real world, as if they never existed.
At dusk, drops of blood appear on the stairs, said to be from the unlucky victims who were torn apart.
Encounter with Hanako, Nene, and Kou
When Aoi Akane, a friend of Nene Yashiro, goes missing, Hanako, Nene, and Kou Minamoto decide to investigate.
They enter the spirit world through the Misaki Stairs.
Inside, they receive a strange phone call from someone claiming to be "Misaki", a former teacher.
This mysterious voice asks them to find her body, saying she died on those stairs.
The Truth Behind Misaki
Spoiler alert: "Misaki" is actually Yako in disguise.
She never was a teacher, but a fox spirit from the shrine.
Yako used the famous ghost story to get people to bring her body parts, hoping to make a new "Misaki".
The real Misaki was the kind man she loved, who died accidentally on the shrine steps.
Yako can transform between a human-like form and her true fox form.
She can make her voice sound like other people and create illusions.
Yako can also bite hard enough to hurt anyone who treats her like a regular animal.
The most important person to Yako was Misaki, the kind man who visited her at the shrine.
She felt so lonely after losing him that she tried to bring him back, even in a strange way.
Yako hates being treated as a pet or just an animal.
She loves bells and always keeps six on her ears, both as a human and a fox.
"You must never step on the fourth step—otherwise, you will be taken away."
"Since Misaki wouldn’t come back, I thought I’d just make a new one myself."
