Character Setting

Edit

Knuckle Bine is a Beast Hunter and a Manipulation-type Nen user’s disciple of Morel Mackernasey, notable for his delinquent appearance, immense combat experience, and deeply soft-hearted nature despite his rough manner of speaking.

He plays a major role in the Chimera Ant Extermination arc as both a frontline fighter and a strategist who specializes in measuring and managing aura.

Knuckle Bine is a professional Beast Hunter and one of Morel Mackernasey’s two disciples, alongside Shoot McMahon.

He becomes a member of the Chimera Ant Extermination Team and takes part in the assault on the royal palace.

He has the look of a stereotypical delinquent: a pompadour hairstyle, loose baggy clothing, and a “come at me” tough-guy expression.

Despite this, his heart is soft, he is very sentimental, and he cries easily.

He is short-tempered, rough, and straightforward in speech, often acting impulsively or emotionally in the moment.

At the same time, he is surprisingly thoughtful in combat, mixing bluff, math, and psychological pressure with his raw physical strength.

Animals like him instinctively, and he is very fond of them in return, often looking after them with obvious tenderness.

This fondness for animals strongly colors his worldview as a Beast Hunter and affects how he views the Chimera Ants.

Knuckle has over 5,000 fights on record, giving him enormous real-world combat experience.

His hand-to-hand combat skills are said to be on par with Kite, and he is excellent at close-quarters brawling.

He also excels at endurance and evasive movement.

His “best trait” in battle is often described as his ability to run away while maintaining high speed, making him ideal for stalling and buying time.

One of his standout quirks is his focus on numbers and aura accounting.

To maximize his Nen ability, he is highly skilled at estimating aura quantities and doing rapid mental calculations during combat.

Knuckle appears brash and open, sometimes loudly declaring that he is a Nen user or rambling about aura consumption in the middle of a fight.

However, these outbursts are often planned, serving to confuse enemies or bait them into underestimating him or stepping into his range.

His voice actor in the 2011 anime adaptation is Wataru Takagi.

In fan tags and discussions, he is most commonly referred to simply as “Knuckle.”

Knuckle’s personality is a mix of delinquent bravado and extreme kindness.

He talks like a thug, picks fights head-on, and gets heated quickly, but his decisions are deeply influenced by empathy.

He has a big-brother vibe with a strong sense of justice, and he hates seeing the weak or innocent being harmed.

He is very emotional, capable of bursting into tears when moved, even in tense or dangerous situations.

His kindness is so strong that it is often described as a weakness in combat.

Morel repeatedly points out that Knuckle is “too soft,” especially when he hesitates to deliver finishing blows or fully commit to lethal actions.

Knuckle tends to empathize even with his enemies or designated targets.

Because of this, he finds it difficult to be truly cold-blooded, which clashes with the brutal realities of high-level battles.

He believes in facing opponents honestly, “head-on and heart-to-heart,” but he dislikes killing even in the context of a serious fight.

This philosophy is reflected in his Nen ability, which focuses on neutralizing rather than destroying the opponent.

Knuckle is also easily influenced by emotional nuance in others.

For example, later in the Chimera Ant arc, the complex emotions he witnesses in the Ant Royal Guards directly affect how he judges them.

As a Beast Hunter, Knuckle specializes in dealing with dangerous creatures, but he does not see all “beasts” as mere monsters.

He struggles with the idea of exterminating the Chimera Ants purely because they are man-eating creatures.

When he learns of the mission to annihilate the dangerous Ants, he is uncomfortable with the one-sided, human-centered logic behind it.

From his perspective as a Beast Hunter, this feels morally complicated, not simply “kill the enemy and move on.”

Because of these mixed feelings, he volunteers for the extermination team with the intention of influencing how things are carried out.

Deep down, he hopes to prevent unnecessary killing and to handle the situation in a way that aligns with his own values.

During the operation, his softness causes internal conflict.

He wants to stop the Ants from harming humans, but he also wants to avoid treating them as disposable pests if there is any chance of understanding.

When he fights the Royal Guard Menthuthuyoupi (often called Youpi), Knuckle initially regards him as a dangerous enemy that must be taken down.

However, Youpi’s evolving behavior and ability to feel confusion, restraint, and even a kind of honor leads Knuckle to reconsider his view.

Eventually, Knuckle witnesses Shaiapouf’s reaction when he senses that Meruem has been fatally poisoned by the “Poor Man’s Rose” bomb.

Shaiapouf’s desperate, anguished expression convinces Knuckle that true mutual understanding between humans and Ants is impossible.

At that moment he discards any remaining hope of “maybe we can understand each other” and commits to fighting the Ants as pure pests.

Even so, he does not abandon his willingness to risk himself for others and his reluctance to kill unless absolutely necessary.

Training with Gon Freecss and Killua Zoldyck

Before the assault on the Chimera Ant nest in NGL, Knuckle is tested by Isaac Netero, the Hunter Chairman.

As a trial and “warm-up,” Netero orders him to fight Gon Freecss and Killua Zoldyck to determine who will join the NGL mission.

Knuckle agrees to the test and faces Gon in a one-on-one duel, with their right to enter NGL on the line.

He chooses to fight Gon in a way that also serves as training for the boy, intentionally holding back part of his power.

For most of the training period, Knuckle deliberately refrains from using his Nen ability “Hakoware.”

He focuses on giving Gon practical combat lessons, teaching him about stamina management, aura calculation, and tactical thinking in real fights.

On the final day, Knuckle lifts this self-imposed restriction and activates Hakoware against Gon.

Even with his ability fully unleashed, he manages to completely overwhelm Gon and wins decisively.

Because of this victory, Knuckle is officially chosen as part of the Chimera Ant Extermination Team heading to NGL.

His performance also leaves a strong impression on both Gon and Killua, who recognize him as a formidable but fundamentally kind fighter.

Encounter with Kite

After infiltrating the Chimera Ant nest, Knuckle and Shoot McMahon run into Kite, who has been captured and manipulated by the Chimera Ants.

Kite is effectively being controlled as a weapon, making him both a dangerous enemy and a tragic figure.

Knuckle and Shoot engage the manipulated Kite in battle, using their abilities to subdue him without killing him.

Through careful teamwork, they manage to protect him and strip away his ability to use Nen, preventing further exploitation.

Knuckle uses Hakoware to seal Kite’s Nen, effectively putting him into a state where he can no longer use his abilities.

This allows them to secure Kite as a protected asset rather than a threat, preserving the possibility of helping or honoring him later.

Assault on the Palace and Battle with Menthuthuyoupi

During the palace invasion, Knuckle teams up with Shoot and Meleoron to confront Menthuthuyoupi, one of the three Royal Guards.

Their goal is not just to defeat Youpi but to stall him, drain his aura, and buy time for the other teams.

Shoot is heavily injured during the fight and becomes unable to continue.

To protect Shoot and keep the plan alive, Knuckle takes on Youpi alone, serving as decoy, attacker, and aura manipulator all at once.

Knuckle and Morel later coordinate their abilities to pressure Youpi to the absolute limit.

By exploiting Hakoware and Morel’s smoke-based abilities, they drive Youpi’s aura “debts” to near-bankruptcy.

At one critical moment, Youpi is only four seconds away from being forced into bankruptcy by Hakoware, which would have sealed his Nen for 30 days.

However, the situation drastically shifts when Morel falls into mortal danger and is about to be killed.

Faced with the choice between finishing Youpi or saving Morel, Knuckle makes a painful decision.

He willingly cancels Hakoware on Youpi in exchange for sparing Morel’s life, effectively giving up a near-certain victory.

This act leaves Youpi free, and Knuckle himself is then spared by Youpi, who chooses not to kill him.

Knuckle is crushed by this outcome, feeling that his softness cost them a decisive win and allowed a major threat to continue fighting.

Continued Operations and Changing Views

Even after his psychological blow against Youpi, Knuckle continues the mission alongside Meleoron.

They remain active components of the strategy, adapting as the situation in the palace changes.

Youpi’s unexpected displays of reasoning and restraint significantly affect Knuckle’s judgment.

He begins to feel that Youpi can no longer be viewed as a mere extermination target; he sees a kind of emerging personhood.

At the same time, Knuckle encounters the raw, ruthless nature of Shaiapouf, who embodies the Chimera Ants’ most uncompromising instincts.

Through Shaiapouf, he experiences a sharp reminder that there is a fundamental barrier between humans and the Ants that cannot easily be crossed.

Despite this realization, Knuckle chooses not to retreat from the moral complexity.

He decides to keep fighting all the way through, holding onto the slim possibility of some form of reconciliation or at least a less senseless outcome, while still doing what must be done.

Confrontation with Meruem

Later, Knuckle comes face-to-face with Meruem, the Chimera Ant King, after Meruem’s recovery and power-up.

In this state, Meruem’s strength far surpasses anything the Hunters can handle.

Knuckle is completely outmatched and is knocked unconscious by Meruem with no real chance to resist.

He is then taken as a hostage, used as leverage in the final standoff.

Ultimately, Meruem dies due to the lingering poison from the Poor Man’s Rose bomb.

With the King’s death, Knuckle is released and survives the ordeal, carrying the emotional and moral scars from the entire Chimera Ant conflict.

Overall Nen Talent

Knuckle Bine is classified as a Nen user whose abilities center on conjuring and manipulation-themed effects, built around numbers and aura economics.

He excels at quickly gauging the aura of others, estimating their total aura pool and consumption rate with impressive accuracy.

He is especially good at mental arithmetic and can update his calculations in the middle of a chaotic fight.

This makes him effective at long-term engagements, where resource management and timing are crucial.

His combat style mixes precise aura budgeting with physical prowess, allowing him to adapt on the fly.

Combined with his stamina and speed, this makes him highly suited for delay tactics, harassment, and grinding opponents down over time.

Hakoware: Auras as Debt

Basic Concept

Knuckle’s signature Nen ability is Ten-Shou Fushi Weiga Dokuson (Hakoware), usually nicknamed “Hakoware”.

The technique visualizes aura as a form of debt and interest, ultimately forcing the target into bankruptcy and a state of absolute Zetsu.

When activated by Knuckle’s direct hit, a small mascot-like Nen beast named Potclean attaches itself to the opponent.

Potclean floats behind or around the target and displays a number on its forehead, representing the “loan balance” of aura.

Knuckle uses a standardized scale where 1 aura unit equals the amount of aura a professional Hunter consumes by using Ren for 1 second.

This lets him quantify exactly how much aura he has “lent” and how close the target is to bankruptcy.

Potclean constantly follows the target and cannot be shaken off, outrun, or destroyed.

It has no combat power itself, but this also makes it completely immune to damage and all direct attacks.

“Loan” Mechanism

When Hakoware is active, Knuckle’s attacks do not deal direct physical or aura damage.

Instead, every successful hit counts as Knuckle lending aura to the target, increasing the loan balance shown on Potclean.

This means the target actually gains aura when Knuckle hits them, at least in terms of raw aura pool.

In other words, hitting the opponent “powers them up” temporarily by increasing their available aura, at the cost of making their future bankruptcy more likely.

If the target attacks Knuckle while Potclean is attached, the mechanics flip.

Any aura they use to attack Knuckle is treated as a repayment of the loan, and the number on Potclean decreases accordingly.

If the loan balance on Potclean drops all the way to zero through repayments, Hakoware is canceled.

At that point, further attacks from the enemy will deal real damage to Knuckle again, and they are no longer on the path to bankruptcy via this ability.

Importantly, during Hakoware, aura used by the opponent to attack Knuckle does not directly injure him while there is an outstanding loan.

Instead, it is applied to reduce the debt total, turning offense into “payment.”

Interest and Distance Limits

Hakoware applies an interest system on top of the basic debt mechanic.

Every 10 seconds, Potclean adds 10% interest (a “ten percent every ten seconds” loan) to the current loan balance.

This causes the aura debt to grow rapidly over time if not paid back.

The longer the battle drags on under Hakoware, the more dangerous it becomes for the target.

However, the interest function has a range limitation.

If the distance between Knuckle and Potclean exceeds 100 meters, the interest stops accumulating.

The ability itself does not end when Knuckle moves more than 100 meters away, and Potclean does not disappear.

In that state, the opponent simply carries around a floating, untouchable mascot showing a frozen loan balance, which can be extremely annoying.

Regardless of distance, Knuckle can roughly sense Potclean’s position at all times.

This allows him to track his marked target even if they try to escape physically.

Bankruptcy and Forced Zetsu

The core purpose of Hakoware is to force the target into “bankruptcy.”

Bankruptcy occurs when the total loaned aura plus interest, as shown by Potclean, exceeds the target’s original total aura capacity.

The moment this threshold is crossed, Potclean transforms into a different form called Toriten (often rendered as “Collection Mode”).

In this state, Toriten instantly “collects” the entire aura balance from the target.

As a result, the target’s remaining aura is drained down to zero, and they are forced into Zetsu, unable to use Nen at all.

This forced Zetsu state lasts for 30 days, during which the target cannot produce or manipulate aura.

Once Toriten activates, the effect is fixed and cannot be canceled by Knuckle.

During the earlier Potclean phase, Knuckle can voluntarily cancel the ability, but once bankruptcy triggers, even he has no way of lifting the 30-day Zetsu.

This makes Hakoware an extremely powerful non-lethal neutralization technique.

Instead of killing an enemy, Knuckle can remove them from the Nen battlefield for an entire month.

Tactical Implications

On its own, Hakoware seems counterintuitive because Knuckle must stack aura on his opponent, making them stronger temporarily.

However, against an enemy with large aura reserves and strong regeneration, the accumulating interest turns the fight into a race the opponent doesn’t realize they are losing.

Knuckle typically uses psychological tactics and misdirection to keep the opponent fighting in a way that builds their debt.

He may provoke them into repeated attacks or pretend vulnerability to bait them into “paying back” too little, too late.

Because the ability is non-lethal and emphasizes sealing instead of killing, it lines up perfectly with Knuckle’s moral discomfort with killing his enemies.

He can fight full-out while still aiming for a result that stops the opponent without ending their life.

Synergy with Meleoron’s Ability

Hakoware has a notable combination with Meleoron’s ability God’s Accomplice, which can render Knuckle completely undetectable.

Under God’s Accomplice, Knuckle, his aura, and all noise he makes vanish from the target’s perception.

Even while Knuckle is invisible and intangible to normal senses, Hakoware still functions normally.

Potclean remains attached to the target, and as long as Knuckle stays within 100 meters, the interest continues to accumulate.

Interestingly, while God’s Accomplice is active, Knuckle himself can no longer see or hear Potclean or the voice that announces interest ticks.

This means he is also cut off from direct information about the current loan balance and timing, adding a layer of difficulty to coordinating attacks.

Nevertheless, the combo is devastating in concept.

It allows Knuckle to build debt on an enemy who cannot sense his presence, turning the fight into an unseen financial trap where the opponent suddenly finds themselves bankrupt.
