Character Setting

Edit

Gabriel Miller is a major antagonist in Sword Art Online: Alicization and the real-world identity of the Gun Gale Online top player Gabriel Miller, as well as the user of the super-account Dark God Vecta in Underworld.

Gabriel Miller serves as the final main villain of the Alicization arc.

He is an American mercenary commander and corporate executive who becomes obsessed with seizing Alice Zuberg.

In the real world, Gabriel is an executive at the private military company Groeben Defense Systems, headquartered in San Diego, and holds the position of Chief Tactical Officer (CTO).

His overwhelming combat ability in Gun Gale Online is backed by real experience in life-or-death battles.

In personality, he appears to be a calm, highly capable soldier with little visible emotional fluctuation.

However, his true nature is that of a psychopathic serial killer whose only pleasure is “touching human souls.”

As Dark God Vecta in Underworld, he commands the Dark Territory armies against the Human Empire.

His ultimate goal is to collect and own as many “souls” as possible, starting with Alice’s.

He is voiced by Akira Ishida in his adult form and Rie Kugimiya in his childhood form in the anime adaptation.

Within the story, he is presented as a direct and terrifying counterpoint to Kazuto Kirigaya and his allies.

Gabriel is defined by an intense, lifelong obsession with the concept of the “soul.”

He interprets extreme fear, despair, and death as moments where a person’s “soul” is laid bare before him.

He is capable of learning quickly and efficiently, having taught himself spoken Japanese in a short time for the Ocean Turtle operation.

He focused on conversational ability and cannot write Japanese, underlining his purely utilitarian mindset.

Despite his calm outward demeanor, everything he does is driven by his desire to once again experience the “contact” he felt when he first killed someone.

He sees other people entirely as tools or specimens, not as fellow human beings.

Gabriel feels no remorse, guilt, or hesitation about killing.

He is not motivated by money, ideology, or patriotism, but exclusively by the pleasure of touching “souls.”

He describes Alice’s soul as something that must be “sweet,” clearly eroticizing and aestheticizing his obsession in a deeply disturbing way.

His fixation goes beyond simple sadism and borders on a religious or mystical hunger for ownership of other minds.

Gabriel’s obsession began in childhood, when he became fascinated with where a person’s “soul” resides.

To satisfy his curiosity, he committed his first murder at about ten years old.

His victim was his childhood girlfriend, Alicia Klingerman.

He killed her in secret and abandoned her body, experiencing intense exhilaration at what he interpreted as contact with her “soul” at the moment of death.

That first murder defined his entire life.

He concluded that killing is the only way to truly “touch” another soul.

As an adult, he continued murdering in secret under the guise of “experiments.”

These killings were not driven by necessity or rage but were calculated attempts to reproduce that first thrill.

Becoming a mercenary was a deliberate career choice that allowed him to kill “legally.”

For Gabriel, battlefield deaths are just another controlled environment to study and savor human souls.

In the real world, Gabriel is a professional soldier in a private military company.

He rose to become the Chief Tactical Officer of Groeben Defense Systems, a major PMC based in San Diego.

His unit specializes in dirty work and covert operations performed by morally compromised soldiers and criminals.

Gabriel fits perfectly into this environment, where lethal force is normalized and oversight is weak.

The U.S. National Security Agency secretly hires Gabriel and Groeben to steal the true artificial intelligence A.L.I.C.E. (Alice) created by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces.

This operation targets the sea-based research platform Ocean Turtle, where Underworld and the AI are located.

On paper, Gabriel’s mission is to secure Alice as a strategic asset for the United States.

In reality, he intends to betray both Groeben and the NSA and keep Alice for himself.

He sees Alice not as a technology or weapon, but as a uniquely pure, valuable “soul.”

The entire operation is, for him, a way to possess and enjoy that soul outside any government’s control.

Gabriel leads a heavily armed team of mercenaries in a direct assault on the Ocean Turtle facility.

His unit is composed of hardened criminals and war-hardened soldiers suited for black operations.

They swiftly seize the main control room, taking control of many essential functions of the platform.

However, the RATH development staff manage to lock external commands to Underworld before evacuating.

This lockout prevents Gabriel from directly extracting Alice’s Fluctlight from outside the simulation.

As a result, he is forced to obtain Alice from inside Underworld itself.

To do so, he uses one of the administrator-level “super-accounts” that the developers forgot to lock.

He logs in to Underworld as Dark God Vecta, the Emperor of the Dark Territory.

From the main control room, he coordinates both the assault in the real world and his movements inside Underworld.

The entire mission shifts from a hacking operation to a full-scale internal invasion of the virtual world.

Taking the Dark God Vecta Account

Once logged into Underworld, Gabriel assumes the identity of Dark God Vecta, one of the four super-accounts representing divine-class entities.

Vecta is the Emperor of the Dark Territory and natural enemy of the Human Empire.

This account grants him a terrifying level of system authority.

His core authority is the ability to interfere with the dynamic data of Fluctlights—effectively manipulating the very souls of Underworld’s inhabitants.

Gabriel quickly exploits this power to assert absolute rule over the Dark Territory.

He uses fear, execution, and raw godlike power to crush dissent and enforce obedience.

Commanding the Dark Territory Army

As Dark God Vecta, Gabriel marshals the entire Dark Territory army for a massive invasion of the Human Empire.

His stated purpose is to capture the “Priestess of Light,” Alice, and bring her to the World End Altar.

He treats his forces as expendable fodder, sacrificing thousands without hesitation.

Even his allies are no more than disposable resources to be burned up in pursuit of Alice.

Any attempt at rebellion or questioning his authority is ruthlessly punished.

He executes subordinates in full view of others to instill terror and break resistance.

Gabriel shows no interest in politics, land, or victory in any human sense.

All strategy is subordinated to finding, isolating, and seizing Alice’s Fluctlight.

Discovery of Alice and Betrayal of His Own Army

During the battle against the Human Empire and invading foreign players, Gabriel finally confirms Alice’s presence on the battlefield.

The war, from his perspective, instantly becomes a distraction.

He uses a flying dragon to rapidly move to the front lines.

Under cover of the chaos caused by the horde of American VR players he brought in as disposable pawns, he snatches Alice.

Once Alice is in his grasp, he essentially abandons the Dark Territory forces without concern.

Their annihilation means nothing to him now that his real prize is within reach.

With Alice in tow, he heads toward a system console to initiate her extraction.

This act leaves both his own army and the Human Empire in disarray, highlighting his complete disregard for all life except the target of his obsession.

Bercouli Synthesis One, the legendary Integrity Knight of the Human Empire, pursues Gabriel and Alice.

Bercouli intercepts Dark God Vecta in a desperate attempt to rescue Alice.

Gabriel combines the administrator-level authority of Vecta with his own formidable “Incarnation,” the power of will in Underworld.

He manipulates the environment, distorts reality, and attacks Bercouli on both physical and mental fronts.

Bercouli is severely outmatched at first, and Gabriel dominates the battle.

Vecta’s authority allows him to warp space and counter Bercouli’s swordsmanship.

However, Bercouli ultimately uses his ultimate technique: a memory release art, unleashing his accumulated battle experience and memories in a single overwhelming strike.

This decisive technique defeats Gabriel’s Vecta avatar and kills him within Underworld.

From Gabriel’s perspective, this is merely a temporary setback.

He has full intention of returning to Underworld with a different, combat-optimized account.

After being logged out of Underworld, Gabriel immediately returns to the dive system on the Ocean Turtle.

He converts his own Gun Gale Online avatar, Gabriel Miller, into Underworld.

This re-entry bypasses the limitations of the Dark God Vecta account while retaining his own honed killing instincts.

It also allows him to wield his familiar battle identity inside a fantasy-styled world.

Waiting for him is Shino Asada, who has converted into Underworld as Solus Sinon.

Gabriel’s plan is to seize her soul as well, seeing her as another appetizing target.

He attempts to kill and “devour” Sinon’s soul, using his negative Incarnation to overwhelm her.

However, her strong will and the protective power of a necklace infused with deep emotional meaning block his attempt.

The resulting battle is intense and brutal.

Gabriel’s Incarnation and combat experience severely injure Sinon, but she manages to resist him.

During the fight, Gabriel loses his right arm and sustains what would be fatal damage to a normal Fluctlight avatar.

Even so, he survives the encounter and continues his pursuit of Alice.

Despite his wounds and weakening state, Gabriel refuses to abandon the chase.

His obsession overrides pain, fear, and rational self-preservation.

Transformation into a Black, Monstrous Angel

Gabriel finally catches up to Alice’s route just as Kazuto Kirigaya, restored and fully conscious, arrives to protect her.

This leads to the ultimate confrontation between the two.

Gabriel’s Incarnation draws on an ocean of negative emotions: fear he inspired, pain he caused, and his own void-like inner self.

As the battle escalates, he abandons his human shape.

He transforms into a towering, pitch-black, monstrous angel-like being.

This form symbolizes his essence: a devourer of souls and embodiment of emptiness.

Using his Incarnation, he attempts to swallow everything—light, space, and the souls of his enemies.

His attacks are designed to erase and consume rather than simply injure.

Clash of Incarnations

Kazuto, in contrast, gathers the hopes, prayers, and wills of people across Underworld.

Their collective belief becomes fuel for his Incarnation.

Kazuto manifests a heart-powered version of his signature sword skill, Starburst Stream.

In this state, every strike is empowered not just by his own will, but by the resolve of countless others.

Gabriel believes even this will eventually become another “soul experience” for him to savor.

He revels in the idea that his own defeat might offer new sensations of fear and death.

However, the united will of Underworld’s residents overwhelms his void-like hunger.

Kazuto’s heart-powered 17-hit Starburst Stream completely shatters Gabriel’s avatar.

Gabriel’s Fluctlight is “killed” within Underworld, culminating his fall as Dark God Vecta and as the intruding soul-eater.

He is forcibly ejected from the virtual world as his avatar is destroyed.

Once expelled from Underworld, Gabriel’s mind experiences a distorted transition back to his body.

Instead of a clean return, he is confronted by the hallucinated presence of Alicia Klingerman.

This vision is rooted in his first murder.

Alicia’s image represents the original fear and soul-contact he has been chasing his entire life.

In this final moment, Gabriel at last feels genuine, overwhelming fear.

This emotion had always belonged to his victims, never to him.

He is metaphorically “dragged” away by Alicia’s phantom, unable to escape the terror he once inflicted on others.

The “mask” he has chased—the expression of pure fear—ends up fixed on his own face.

Gabriel dies in the real world with that expression, consumed by the very emotion he sought to extract from others.

His life’s pursuit of souls ends in the collapse of his own.

Gun Gale Online and Fatal Bullet

In Gun Gale Online, Gabriel plays under the name Gabriel Miller and is known in-universe as an abnormal, overwhelmingly powerful player.

His skills and battlefield instincts make him a figure of fear and curiosity among top GGO players.

In the game Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet, Gabriel appears behind the scenes using an Afasys unit named Lievre.

He orchestrates a major incident in GGO without revealing his true identity.

His goal in this plot is to collect data on GGO’s strongest players.

He is already aware of Alice’s existence by this point, making it likely that these data-gathering efforts are preparation for his future Underworld operation.

His dialogue and behavior in Fatal Bullet strongly hint that he is setting up his long-term plan to acquire Alice.

The game plants several foreshadowing elements connecting his activities in GGO to the Alicization storyline.

It remains unclear whether he was directly involved in the events that caused Alice to appear in SAO and GGO in certain game scenarios.

Nonetheless, his presence is written as a significant piece of overarching foreshadowing.

Equipment as Dark God Vecta (Game Version)

In Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet and related game adaptations, his Vecta form is associated with specific named equipment.

His headgear is called “Darkness Band,” his armor set is “Darkness Mail,” and his long sword is named “Soul Eater.”

These items visually emphasize his dark, soul-devouring nature.

They combine gothic, militaristic, and divine imagery to reinforce his identity as a dark god of the battlefield.

Gabriel Miller’s adult form is voiced by Akira Ishida.

His child form is voiced by Rie Kugimiya.

Akira Ishida is a long-established voice actor admired by many younger performers.

Kazuto Kirigaya’s voice actor, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, has publicly cited Ishida as one of his goals and inspirations.

By the time of Alicization, Sword Art Online had already become one of Matsuoka’s signature works.

The arc’s casting has an almost symbolic structure.

Kazuto’s key partner is voiced by one of Matsuoka’s close friends.

The main heroine of Alicization is voiced by a female actor known for excellent chemistry with him.

Finally, the last major opponent in Alicization—Gabriel Miller—is voiced by Matsuoka’s admired senior, Akira Ishida.

This creates a sense of fate or narrative symmetry at the meta level: friend, ideal partner, and idol all gathered for the arc’s climax.

As a small extra bit of trivia, one of Ishida’s own close friends in the voice acting world has also played a major boss in the Sword Art Online series.

That character stood in the path of Kazuto and Shino Asada, echoing the pattern of close real-life and in-story connections.
