Damocles

Damocles takes on two forms: human and dragon.

As a human, he appears as an elderly man with long white hair and a big bushy beard. He wears a brown cloak with a high collar that wraps around his whole body.

His dragon form looks similar to Tohru, but his scales are a brownish ochre. He has three pairs of horns on each side, whiskers growing from his snout like a Chinese dragon, and his wings are the same brown color as his cloak.

Damocles is thoughtful, stern, and very proud. He strongly believes that dragons and humans are too different to ever truly get along.

He is a leader of the Chaos Faction and acts as a manager to keep the worlds in balance.

He never kills humans without reason but still cannot accept that dragons and humans could live together in peace.

Although strict, Damocles deeply loves Tohru and only wants her to live happily. However, his old-fashioned beliefs often make him lonely when he realizes Tohru has changed and sees humans differently now.

Damocles tries to hide his softer side but sometimes shows humor, like pointing out old cell phones or using modern slang, showing he has adapted surprisingly well to the human world.

He is also very good at cooking and loves reading books.

Damocles earned his title "Emperor of Demise" because he questioned why dragons, who should be bound to nothing, started fighting gods and following rules just to manage their world. Even while he doubted these endless fights, Damocles became the leading dragon of the Chaos Faction.

He hoped his daughter would be free from all these heavy burdens and just live the way her heart leads. He sent Tohru on many travels, wanting her to learn about the world, but this led Tohru to fight gods alone, putting her in great danger. Damocles deeply regrets not understanding her feelings and worries he was a bad parent.

Damocles has outstanding magic skills.

He can fire beams of light, open gates between worlds, and control his cloak to capture people even when floating in the air.

In his dragon form, he generates huge amounts of magic, enough to suddenly change the weather and fill the sky with clouds when he appears.

Other dragons see his power as nearly absolute. Even Tohru is much weaker in comparison.

Though he threatens to use full force against those who resist him, there are hints that Damocles holds back and never truly tries to seriously harm his loved ones.

With Tohru

Damocles is Tohru's father.

He raised her with love, but their relationship becomes strained because he cannot accept her new love for the human world.

Tohru respects her father but feels lonely that they can no longer understand each other's point of view. Still, their bond is never truly broken.

With Kobayashi

Kobayashi stands up to Damocles when he tries to take Tohru back. Damocles and Kobayashi clash, but he is eventually moved by her trust in Tohru.

With Other Dragons

He is highly respected and feared. Even Kanna Kamui and Fafnir admit his overwhelming strength.

Damocles also has a connection with Shouta Magatsuchi's father, a wizard who knows about the other world. He sometimes asks him to report on how Tohru is doing.

The Arrival in the Human World

Damocles arrives in the human world, making the weather turn bad and scaring animals away just by being there. The other dragons notice and watch carefully.

Taking Tohru Back

Worried that Tohru staying in the human world will upset the balance, Damocles tries to take her home. He is met by a determined Kobayashi and faces Tohru's fierce resistance.

Feeling both the force of Tohru's will and Kobayashi's moving words, Damocles backs off, not fully convinced but choosing to wait and see for now.

Later Encounters

Over time, Damocles visits the human world more often to check up on Tohru. He even adjusts to modern life, using a smartphone and enjoying izakaya (Japanese bars).

When Kobayashi is chosen as a "protector," Damocles visits again, showing a more relaxed, even funny side. He discusses daily life, criticizes old cell phones, and jokes about his situation using modern slang.

He also proves to be an excellent cook and teaches Tohru new recipes.

• Damocles was probably inspired by the red dragon from the Apocalypse.
• His official title, "Emperor of Demise," is first mentioned by Elma; his real name is revealed much later.
• Tohru's mother, another dragon, left after giving birth, and Damocles raised Tohru alone.
• Despite his intimidating image, later chapters and spin-offs show his comical and easy-going side.
• He loves sushi and tempura but dislikes grapefruit.
• Hobby: Reading.
• Special skill: Cooking.
• He named Tohru after a character from a book he liked as a young dragon.

In spin-offs, Damocles is shown enjoying games and snacks with Kanna Kamui. Even if he loses at games, he does not hold a grudge and acts silly, surprising everyone with his laid-back manner.

Sometimes he breaks into Kobayashi's home just to eat rice crackers or play games with the kids, surprising even Tohru.

The author calls Damocles the strongest character in the series so far and describes him as both a legendary grandpa and an ordinary old man at the same time.
