He is the leader of the Sekihō Army, whom Sagara Sanosuke and Tsukioka Tsunan deeply respect. From the side of the Ishin Shishi, he was executed as a false imperial loyalist, which became the reason Sanosuke started bearing the “Aku Ichimonji” (character for “evil”). While in historical records and the original manga, he was beheaded, in the first anime adaptation, he was executed by firing squad. Later, when Sanosuke attempts to master the Double Impact technique, he appears as a ghost. While Sanosuke is on the verge of death, he tries to persuade him to give up on mastering the technique, but Sanosuke refuses. After listening to Sanosuke’s resolve and determination to move forward, he smiles in satisfaction and disappears.

In the revised edition of “Kenshin Kaden,” he is refined as a mentor-like figure for Sanosuke, and since he was actually a boisterous person, this aspect is also emphasized. Like Sanosuke, he is often seen with a fish bone in his mouth.
