One of the top middle blockers in the prefecture. He specializes in "guess" blocking with his "reading and intuition," earning the nickname "Genius Blocker" and "Guess Monster." He looks down on Tsukishima, who is the opposite type of player to himself, calling him the "ordinary middle blocker (compared to Hinata)," but acknowledges him as a capable blocker. During Karasuno High's final attack, he noticed that Hinata had changed the tempo and sensed "defeat." In his childhood, his free play style was not recognized, and he was nicknamed "Yokai."

He applied to Shiratorizawa because he wanted to play volleyball in a way that felt good to him.

He recognizes Hinata's physical abilities and stamina, and Kageyama's high skills and obsession with victory, calling both of them "Yokai." Incidentally, he also thinks Ushijima seems "Yokai-like."
