Mio Takamiya is called the “First Spirit,” “Original Spirit,” or “Primordial Spirit.” She is different from all other spirits and is the root of their powers. Her real identity is a higher-dimensional lifeform brought into creation when Isaac Ray Pelham Westcott, Ellen Mira Mathers, and Elliot Baldwin Woodman performed a magical ritual to change the world, gathering the Earth’s mana in one place.
After appearing in Japan, Mio caused the South Kanto Spacequake and was found by a boy named Shin Takamiya, choosing to live with him as an adoptive sister and learning about human love.
However, she was discovered by DEM, and Mana Takamiya was kidnapped. Shin was killed protecting Mio. Heartbroken and angry, Mio decided to re-create Shin. She absorbed his body and used her power to create Shido Itsuka. Mio then started a plan to prepare Shido as Shin’s perfect vessel by creating and giving him 10 Sephira crystal fragments, making him undying.
For her goals, she operates both as her main self, Phantom, and as her human form, Reine Murasame, to watch over Shido and the spirits.
Mio Takamiya is by far the strongest spirit, with almost god-like powers. Her spirit armor is called Code: Yaa – a goddess-like dress.
Her Angels are:
- Ain Soph Aur: A massive flower with many petals that can destroy all living things and break down even objects.
- Ain Soph: A giant tree that twists all reason and rules. Inside its area, Mio can control and rewrite the laws of everything, canceling attacks, stripping control over other angels, or moving freely through space.
- Ain: A seed-shaped angel that can erase all things, making touched targets “nonexistent.”
These Angels have names taken from the Tree of Sephiroth.
- Shido Itsuka: The person she created to be the new vessel for Shin Takamiya, and later someone she cares deeply about.
- Shin Takamiya: The original boy Mio loved and lost. She aims to bring him back in any way possible.
- Mana Takamiya: She once lived as her adoptive sister and cares for her.
- Kurumi Tokisaki: Kurumi hates Mio because her close friend Sawawa was turned into a monster by Mio, and Kurumi herself was manipulated as well.
- Reine Murasame: This is Mio's other self, who watches over Shido and the spirits.
- Isaac Ray Pelham Westcott, Ellen Mira Mathers, Elliot Baldwin Woodman: The magicians who created her.
- Mio received her name because she met Shin on May 30th. Mana named her “Mio” by combining the number 3 (mi) with the water radical, and the kanji for "zero."
- Her identification code is Deus, meaning “God” in Latin.
- Her acts are guided by her love for Shin, not evil.
"Thank you. I'm happy. I really 'like' you."
"Never letting you go again. I won't make any more mistakes."
"Shido. You are truly wonderful. I love you so much… but Shin will always be first."
The Creation and Tragedy
Mio Takamiya was born as a side effect of a magic ritual performed by three powerful magicians, hoping to rewrite the world.
She first appeared in Japan, causing the South Kanto Spacequake, and was soon found by Shin Takamiya and his younger sister, Mana Takamiya. At first, she could barely speak, but quickly learned about the world, becoming close to both of them and eventually falling in love with Shin.
However, their peaceful days ended when DEM found her, kidnapping Mana and killing Shin. Overwhelmed by sadness and rage, Mio used her power to absorb Shin’s remains, deciding to make him immortal and never lose him again.
Her Plan to Create a New Shin
To bring Shin back, Mio created Shido Itsuka from Shin’s body, then began a plan to make him into the perfect vessel. She split her essence, creating the 10 Sephira crystals, and spread them by transforming unfortunate girls into spirits, providing these crystals to Shido.
For observation, Mio split her being into two: as Phantom, gathering the Sephira, and as Reine Murasame, staying close to Shido and the spirits.
She manipulated Kurumi Tokisaki, turning her friend Sawawa into a monster, leading to Kurumi's hatred.
Final Confrontation
As the final battle neared, Kurumi used her powers to confront Phantom, revealing that she and Reine Murasame were the same. Mio reclaimed her full self, attempted to erase Shido’s memories and turn him fully into Shin, but the other spirits, led by Tohka Yatogami, stopped her.
She then fought all the other spirits, trying to take their Sephira crystals and succeeded in defeating several.
At the darkest moment, Kurumi sent a message to Shido’s past self so he could undo the tragedy using his own unconsciously sealed power. Shido tried to reach out to Reine for a date and nearly succeeded in sealing her, but failed due to Mio's true feelings.
After this, the timeline was attacked by DEM, leading to another major battle. In the end, Mio and Shido shared a deep conversation by the sea, where Shido realized Mio’s real wish was to find someone able to end her existence and pain.
The End
In the final fight against Westcott, Mio gave everything to save the world. She used her power to erase herself and Westcott completely, leaving her last words for Shido before disappearing.
At her journey’s end, she was finally reunited with Shin Takamiya in a world beyond, leaving a smile on her face, marking her true ending.
