He is an elite officer from Germany and a member of the European secret society known as the "Black Knights." Although he usually presents himself with gentlemanly manners, he is actually of a vile nature, and when his anger reaches its peak, an orientalist side of him emerges. He is fiercely loyal to the leader of the Black Knights, "Meister" (who has not yet appeared).
His goal is to obtain the "Holy Elixir," and for that purpose, he came to Japan in pursuit of Dr. Hans. He possesses exceptional horsemanship skills and expertly wields twin lances on horseback, showing enough prowess to trouble Kenshin Himura. Moreover, he wears Western-style black armor under his clothes, which allowed him to withstand a direct hit from the Kuzuryusen.
Because Kenshin Himura's ultimate technique, Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki, relies heavily on the step-in footwork, it was believed that the shorter Kenshin would be unable to reach him while he was on horseback. However, the vacuum generated by Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki drew in the flames scattered across the battlefield, which struck him directly and led to his defeat. Afterward, devastated by the collapse of the Black Knights’ ambitions, he disappeared into the flames, emaciated and broken.
