John Bacchus is the mayor of Sakurami City and a key player in The Future Diary story. He is the person who first suggested creating The Future Diary to Deus Ex Machina, making him one of the masterminds behind the deadly survival game. His special diary, “The watcher,” lets him spy on other people’s Future Diary entries, giving him tons of information but with important limits. Using his power and smarts, Bacchus once tried to rule the city using advanced technology and cold strategies. Even though he looks calm and powerful, his story is full of big failures and shocking moments that change him in each world.
John Bacchus is a well-dressed man, fitting his position as mayor. He usually looks calm and serious, making him seem both trustworthy and distant.
Bacchus is clever, calculating, and always thinking several steps ahead. He uses his mayor role and his diary’s power to control situations. Even though he is respected, he tends to act cold and manipulative. He is not above making cruel decisions to reach his goals, but he also has moments of care, especially in different worlds.
Bacchus became the mayor of Sakurami City thanks to his intelligence and leadership skills. He worked closely with Deus Ex Machina, and together they created the first prototype of The Future Diary.
Bacchus owns "The watcher," a special Future Diary that lets him read what other diary holders see in their diaries. He can also read "grandchild diaries" made using Kamado Ueshita's “Propagation Diary.” However, he can’t predict normal people, or himself, unless someone’s diary writes about him. For holders like Yuno Gasai, whose diaries don’t predict themselves, Bacchus also can’t see their own future. "The watcher" is weak against fake or altered information—Yukiteru Amano and his friends once tricked him this way. This diary is based on a prototype Bacchus built with Deus Ex Machina.
- Kamado Ueshita: Bacchus captures Kamado and uses her diary in his plan to control the city's people.
- Deus Ex Machina: Together, they invented Future Diaries.
- Yukiteru Amano, Yuno Gasai, Minene Uryuu: He later becomes their enemy.
- In the third world, Bacchus starts dating Kamado Ueshita.
- His name comes from "Bacchus," the god of wine in Roman mythology.
- In The Future Diary: Redial, his self-centered plans for picking a god are rejected by both Deus Ex Machina and Mur Mur, who even calls him the “dumbest” across the different worlds.
The Proposal to Deus Ex Machina
John Bacchus was the first to suggest making The Future Diary to Deus Ex Machina.
With his help, they created a diary that could spy on other players’ diaries.
Taking Control as Mayor
Using how smart and powerful he was, Bacchus had the city council vote to break up "Mother’s Village."
This village was special to a diary holder named Kamado Ueshita.
He then captured Kamado and linked her "Propagation Diary" to his citywide computer system "HOLON III."
By doing this, Bacchus made all citizens of Sakurami City own "grandchild diaries," allowing him to see predictions about the whole city.
The Final Battle and Downfall
Bacchus becomes the enemy of Yukiteru Amano, Yuno Gasai, and Minene Uryuu.
He hid inside a large vault at the Amano Bank, confident because the door was locked by a retina scan.
However, Yuno Gasai opened the vault anyway and killed Bacchus.
His plan to control the game and the city failed.
Events in the Third World
In the third version of the world, Bacchus’s prototype diary could peek at diary entries from the second world.
Seeing a future where he was defeated, he decided to stop the Future Diary Game.
Instead, he used his power to help support "Mother’s Village" instead of destroying it.
In the final episode, two years later, he is seen in a relationship with Kamado Ueshita.
The Future Diary: Redial
In The Future Diary: Redial, Bacchus keeps trying to find ways to become god but only suggests plans that would let him win.
These ideas are all rejected by Deus Ex Machina and Mur Mur, who jokes that Bacchus is “even dumber” in this world compared to the others.
