Maria Totsuka is a female original character from the television anime Seven Mortal Sins, a quiet high school girl at Seiseki Girls' Academy whose fate becomes entangled with Lucifer after having her heart taken.
Maria Totsuka attends Seiseki Girls' Academy and is introduced as a reserved, gentle girl.
Her life changes completely when she encounters the fallen Lucifer and witnesses her descent into Hell.
When Lucifer returns to the human world, Maria has her heart stolen and is forcibly turned into an immortal being.
From that point on, she is unwillingly drawn into Lucifer's journey and the battles involving the Demon Lords.
At first, Maria follows Lucifer reluctantly and largely because she has no choice.
As they continue traveling together, however, she gradually builds trust with Lucifer and becomes far closer to her.
One sign of that growing bond is that Lucifer permits Maria to address her without honorific distance, a notable gesture of intimacy and trust.
Maria also becomes friendly with Leviathan during these events.
Before Lucifer was cast down, she had entrusted Maria with angelic blood.
Because of this, Maria gains the ability to detect the Demon Lords of the Seven Deadly Sins while they are in the human world.
Her stolen heart and altered body also leave her in an abnormal state, effectively making her immortal.
Belial eventually realizes that Maria carries the angelic blood given to her by Lucifer and abducts her.
She is bound and used as a hostage in order to pressure Lucifer.
In one of Maria's most painful moments, she is threatened into stabbing Lucifer while her own heart is being crushed.
Lucifer deliberately rushes into the blade herself, causing Maria to stab her and break down in intense grief.
This apparent tragedy is later revealed to have been part of Lucifer's plan to switch her own heart with Maria's heart.
During the fierce clash between Lucifer and Michael, Maria recalls that the angel statue her mother showed her at church in childhood was in fact Lucifer.
After Lucifer is defeated and dies in battle against Michael, Maria pierces her own heart and offers herself as a sacrifice to revive her.
However, the angelic blood remaining within Lucifer flows out in the form of tears, and Maria's body is regenerated.
In the short anime that serves as an epilogue to the television series, Maria is invited to a hot spring inn where Lucifer, now seated at the head of Hell, celebrates victory with the Demon Lords.
Belial and Astaroth are also present, and Maria appears to have become friendly with all of the Demon Lords.
