Taiju is Senkuu Ishigami’s childhood friend and one of the first central viewpoints in Dr. Stone.

He initially appears as a regular high school student preparing to confess his long-held feelings to Yuzuriha Ogawa.

Just as Taiju finally gathers the courage to confess, a mysterious global petrification beam turns all humans into stone.

His confession is cut short, but his unwavering determination to tell Yuzuriha how he feels becomes the key to his survival.

Taiju is a classic “muscle-brained” character who readily admits that studying and thinking through complex problems are not his strengths.

However, he is honest, straightforward, and fiercely loyal, especially toward Senkuu.

He hates conflict and clings to a personal creed: he will not hit people.

Even in a brutal survival world, Taiju chooses to endure blows rather than strike back.

From the very first chapter, the story is initially told through Taiju’s eyes, giving the impression that he is the main protagonist.

Later, the narrative focus gradually shifts to Senkuu, while Taiju remains a key supporting hero.

Taiju is an earnest, impulsive action-taker who acts first and worries about details later.

His moral compass is simple but strong, and he reacts instinctively to protect others.

He has a strong sense of justice and is openly opposed to killing in any form.

To him, “killing people is a bad thing,” no matter the justification or supposed greater good.

Taiju’s loyalty to Senkuu is absolute.

If Senkuu says something, Taiju believes it without question and throws himself into making it happen.

He is also extremely considerate toward Yuzuriha Ogawa, whom he has loved for over five years.

After the petrification, he decides not to confess in the “no-escape” Stone World, feeling it would be unfair and cowardly to push his feelings on her under such desperate conditions.

Despite constantly calling himself “bad with his head,” he is not actually stupid.

His thinking is simple and direct, but he has good instincts, strong memory, and can connect hints in an emergency.

Taiju’s mental strength is as impressive as his physical stamina.

He keeps his consciousness intact for thousands of years while petrified, purely through his determination to see Yuzuriha again.

Taiju is tall and heavily built, standing at 189 cm and weighing 95 kg.

He is visibly muscular, with a large frame that often makes him stand out in any group.

His sheer size leads Senkuu to habitually call him a “big lug.”

Taiju’s imposing build contrasts with his gentle and nonviolent personality, creating a memorable visual and character gap.

Physical Strength and Stamina

Taiju’s most defining trait is his overwhelming physical capability.

He is easily one of the strongest and most enduring humans in Dr. Stone, even among many “cheat-level” characters.

He can casually lift and carry the stone body of Yuzuriha Ogawa, which is extremely heavy.

He also takes on massive physical projects alone, doing the manual labor needed to make Senkuu’s science possible.

Taiju estimates that he can cover about 80 kilometers with the mindset that “it’s just two full marathons, I can do it in five hours.”

This gives a rough idea of his absurd endurance.

He can handle repetitive, exhausting labor without complaint, such as farming wide fields or making countless trips with heavy loads.

He is also a strong swimmer, joking that “just 200 to 300 underwater round trips” is not a big deal.

When it comes to durability, Taiju is almost superhuman.

He is the first person shown to withstand a full-force kick from Tsukasa Shishiou without collapsing.

He also possesses an incredibly powerful voice.

At one point, he manages to trigger a shock cannon (sound bomb) a second time using only his own shout, while standing at the most dangerous, direct impact spot and remaining perfectly fine.

Intelligence and Resourcefulness

Taiju is famously called “thick-headed” by Senkuu, and he earns that title in academic or strategic discussions.

He struggles with complex theories, calculations, and detailed planning.

However, he has an excellent memory and sharp instincts in critical moments.

He remembers details like where grape vines grow, leading to the idea of fermenting grapes into wine.

When facing a pack of lions, Taiju recalls having found the petrified Tsukasa Shishiou earlier and suggests reviving him as a solution.

This quick thinking helps save them from immediate danger.

Similarly, he pieces together tiny hints Senkuu left behind and figures out how to revive him.

This shows that Taiju’s problem-solving ability is not absent; it is just very direct and situational.

Mental Resilience

Taiju keeps his consciousness alive for thousands of years while petrified, from 2019 to the year 5738.

His single driving thought—confessing his feelings to Yuzuriha Ogawa—serves as his mental anchor.

Unlike most people, he awakens from stone without the use of the revival fluid.

This places him in the same extraordinary category as Senkuu in terms of sheer willpower.

Later, when the Kingdom of Science receives dangerous, unsettling messages from the mysterious “Why-man,” Taiju remains unshaken.

While others panic, he simply focuses on “doing what he needs to do,” showing his unbreakable resolve.

Before Petrification

Before the world turned to stone, Taiju is a high school student at Hirosue High School.

He spends much of his time helping Senkuu with reckless science experiments, including a variety of explosions and trial-and-error inventions.

He has been in love with his classmate Yuzuriha Ogawa for more than five years.

On the day he decides to finally confess to her under a camphor tree, the mysterious green light sweeps across Earth and turns everyone into stone.

Petrification and Awakening

Taiju is petrified along with the rest of humanity.

However, he clings to consciousness and counts the time passing in his mind for thousands of years.

In the year 5738, he manages to break free from his stone shell purely through willpower.

Soon after, he reunites with Senkuu Ishigami, who had awakened earlier and begun primitive survival experiments.

From that point on, the two form a perfect partnership: Senkuu handles all brainwork, while Taiju handles the heavy lifting.

Thanks to Taiju’s manual labor, Senkuu’s pace of development dramatically speeds up, leading to the creation of the revival fluid.

Working with Senkuu and Reviving Humanity

Once reunited, Taiju devotes himself to helping Senkuu bring back civilization.

He gathers food, shells, and materials, farms, and performs dangerous physical tasks in order to free petrified humans.

After Yuzuriha Ogawa is revived, Taiju thinks about finally confessing to her.

But he decides to postpone, believing that expressing his feelings when there is no normal society and no way out would be unfair.

Conflict with Tsukasa Shishiou

As the Kingdom of Science grows, Senkuu and Taiju choose to revive Tsukasa Shishiou, the “strongest primate high schooler,” as a protector from wild animals.

This decision has deep consequences.

Tsukasa, however, believes only the young and “pure” should be revived and opposes returning corrupt adults to life.

He plans a “might makes right” stone-age empire without modern civilization.

A clash of ideals forms between Tsukasa’s “Stone World of power” and Senkuu’s “Kingdom of Science.”

Taiju fundamentally rejects Tsukasa’s willingness to destroy stone statues (and thus kill people).

Taiju’s creed during this conflict can be summed up in his own famous lines:

“I will not hit people!”

“But I don’t care how much you hit or kick me!”

“In return, stop breaking the stone statues!”

“Killing people is a bad thing!”

To protect Senkuu and their dream, Taiju and Yuzuriha join Tsukasa’s empire on the surface as if they have surrendered.

In truth, they act as spies and hostages, secretly supporting Senkuu’s plans from within enemy territory.

Joining the Kingdom of Science

Later, Taiju and Yuzuriha properly reunite with the Kingdom of Science.

From that point on, Taiju throws himself into every major physical task.

When the group begins full-scale agriculture, Taiju is appointed leader of the farming effort.

He plows massive fields, secures food, and helps stabilize the settlement’s long-term survival.

He also works in mining operations, hauling ore and materials needed for metallurgy and advanced inventions.

His ability to do the work of many people accelerates the scientific revolution Senkuu is driving.

Eventually, Taiju also boards the science vessel Perseus as the designated heavy labor specialist.

He moves huge logs, assists with ship repairs, and generally fills any role where extreme strength and stamina are needed.

Senkuu Ishigami

Senkuu Ishigami is Taiju’s best friend and partner in rebuilding civilization.

Their dynamic is simple: Senkuu thinks, Taiju moves.

They have known each other since childhood, spending countless hours conducting risky science experiments together.

Taiju trusted Senkuu even back then, volunteering as a test subject or helper despite frequent explosions.

In the Stone World, their relationship becomes the core engine of the story.

Senkuu relies on Taiju’s body as much as Taiju relies on Senkuu’s brain.

Taiju never doubts Senkuu’s dream of reviving all of humanity through science.

He commits to this goal fully, even risking his life against Tsukasa Shishiou’s empire.

Yuzuriha Ogawa

Yuzuriha Ogawa is Taiju’s childhood friend and long-term crush.

He cherishes her deeply and spends years gathering courage to confess.

The global petrification hits at the worst possible moment, freezing his confession mid-sentence.

This unfinished confession becomes his anchor during thousands of years in stone.

After Yuzuriha is revived with the help of Senkuu’s science, Taiju wants to immediately tell her how he feels.

Yet he stops himself, believing that confessing in their desperate, post-apocalyptic situation would be one-sided and unfair.

Instead, he decides to wait until civilization is restored to a point where she can freely choose her future.

This decision shows Taiju’s deep respect for her and his sense of what is “fair” as a man.

When everything is finally resolved and peace is achieved, Taiju and Yuzuriha eventually get married.

They start a fashion company together, with Yuzuriha’s delicate craft skills and Taiju serving as the company’s “heavy labor” specialist.

Tsukasa Shishiou

Tsukasa Shishiou initially appears as their savior against wild beasts but becomes the main ideological rival to Senkuu’s vision.

Taiju respects Tsukasa’s strength and charisma but cannot accept his willingness to kill by destroying stone statues.

Taiju is the first person in the series to withstand Tsukasa’s devastating roundhouse kick without collapsing.

This surprises Tsukasa and highlights Taiju’s abnormal durability.

Even while pretending to serve Tsukasa, Taiju secretly works for the Kingdom of Science.

He uses his position within Tsukasa’s empire to protect Yuzuriha and gather information.

After the central conflicts of Dr. Stone are resolved and the mysteries surrounding the petrification are addressed, Taiju finally transitions into a more peaceful life.

He marries Yuzuriha Ogawa, fulfilling the promise he carried through thousands of years.

Together, they found a fashion company that blends Yuzuriha’s artistic skill with modern technology.

Taiju naturally takes on the role of heavy labor specialist, handling all physically demanding tasks for the business.

Even in peacetime, Taiju remains true to himself: hardworking, cheerful, and always ready to put his strength to use for others.

He continues to embody the idea that pure effort, kindness, and unshakable convictions are as important to civilization as science and intellect.

In the opening of Dr. Stone, the story appears to center on Taiju, making it seem like he is the main protagonist.

The point of view follows him through his life before petrification, the moment of disaster, and his dramatic awakening.

However, the author’s original plan always had Senkuu Ishigami as the true main character.

Taiju’s protagonist-like introduction was partly a strategic choice in case pure “science adventure” did not gain popularity.

If the series had struggled as a science-focused story, the creators could have shifted the narrative into a more battle-oriented direction with Taiju as the fighter-type lead.

Because Senkuu’s science-centric storyline proved popular, this backup plan was never needed.

As a result, Taiju occupies a unique position: he feels like a “former protagonist” who gracefully hands the main spotlight to Senkuu.

Even so, his presence remains vital, and the Kingdom of Science would literally not move forward as fast without his immense strength and steadfast heart.
