Character Setting

Edit

Zegion is a major supporting character in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, a hyper‑specialized insectoid warrior who becomes one of Rimuru Tempest’s three strongest subordinates and the labyrinth’s most powerful guardian.

Zegion is an insect‑type monster originally discovered and named by Rimuru Tempest in the Jura Forest.

He later evolves through multiple stages into an upper holy demonoid spirit, then into a pinnacle holy demonoid spirit, and becomes one of the “Twelve Guardian Kings of Holy and Demonic Fusion.”

He serves as the floor guardian of the 80th floor of Ramiris’s Labyrinth and is counted among the “Labyrinth Ten Lords.”

Within the labyrinth, he is generally regarded as the strongest fighter after Veldora Tempest.

Zegion is a quiet, intensely stoic warrior who lives for two things: loyalty to Rimuru and the pursuit of strength.

Outside of those, he shows very little personal interest, giving him an almost ascetic, martial presence.

Despite belonging to a species known for uncontrollable battle instincts, Zegion combines a powerful fighting drive with exceptionally high rationality.

He loves peace in principle, but trains relentlessly so he can protect that peace for Rimuru’s nation.

His respect for Rimuru is strongly idealized and filtered through heavy admiration, arguably the deepest among Rimuru’s many subordinates.

He seeks strength not out of ambition or lust for dominance, but purely to become more worthy as Rimuru’s servant.

In contrast to many insect‑type monsters who speak in broken language, Zegion (along with Apito) speaks fluently and politely.

He is considerate and gentlemanly, similar in temperament to Geld, and is capable of subtle care for others.

In the comedic spin‑off, he plays with children and worries about Apito when she gets into trouble, highlighting a softer, kind side.

Even so, he remains generally taciturn, rarely speaking during Labyrinth Ten Lords meetings unless the subject is Rimuru.

His signature line captures his mindset:

“I dedicate this victory to Lord Rimuru.”

Originally, Zegion is about 50 cm long, resembling a fusion between a rhinoceros beetle and a stag beetle.

His carapace is heavily damaged when Rimuru first finds him, but later restored using Rimuru’s own cells.

After evolving into an insect‑type majin, he becomes a slender humanoid figure.

He is covered in a jet‑black exoskeleton and bears a single horn on his forehead that shines like a crimson jewel.

Following his awakening as an insect god and later as a phantom spirit bug, his body and exoskeleton reach mythical‑class quality.

His exoskeleton serves as both armor and a medium for his enormous power, giving him a dark, almost divine, knight‑like presence.

Zegion is one of the strongest combatants in the entire series, often ranked alongside Diablo and Benimaru—and in several contexts, above them.

Within Tempest, he is considered one of Rimuru’s “three apex subordinates,” and within the labyrinth, second only to Veldora in overall combat power.

Racial Traits and Physique

Insect‑type magical body: Zegion’s base species is a magic insect beast, whose true nature is a monster that hosts the power of spirits.

This gives him natural resistance and advantages against demons, making even Diablo wary of a direct fight.

Exoskeleton of magical steel: His exoskeleton is formed from Rimuru’s cells fused with magisteel and then further optimized.

After awakening, this exoskeleton becomes mythical‑class, rivaling or surpassing god‑class weapons and armor.

Physical Performance: His bodily abilities are on a completely different scale from ordinary humanoids.

Graceful in motion yet overwhelming in brute force, he combines speed, power, and precision in close combat.

Battle Style: Zegion specializes in close‑quarters combat and martial arts, using his exoskeleton like natural armor.

He excels at unarmed fighting but can also fight with weapons when needed (to the point that a legendary sword literally transforms into his wings upon accepting him).

Ultimate Skill: King of Illusions (Mephisto)

Zegion’s main ultimate ability is King of Illusions (Mephisto), a high‑end spiritual and reality‑manipulation skill.

It allows him to construct a “fantasy world”, a personal domain where his will defines the rules and where he is essentially invincible.

Within this ability, he possesses a suite of powers, including:

Thought Acceleration – Hyper‑fast thinking and reaction.

Universal Perception – Near‑omniscient sensory awareness in his surroundings.

Demonic Lord’s Haki – Overwhelming aura of a true ruler.

Water and Lightning Control – Full control over water and thunder elements.

Space‑Time Manipulation – Manipulation of spatial and temporal coordinates.

Multidimensional Barrier – Complex, layered barriers across dimensions.

All Things in Creation – Broad information analysis and control over phenomena.

Mind Control – High‑level interference with minds and spirits.

Fantasy World – Manifestation of his own closed reality where his defenses are absolute.

Life Domination (Sephirot) – Powers of life control, integrated after inheriting Zeranus’s ultimate skill.

Attacks within this fantasy domain are negated regardless of their nature, and opponents often die without even understanding what happened.

After defeating the Insect Demon King Zeranus, he merges Zeranus’s King of Life (Sephirot) into Mephisto, amplifying his control over life itself.

Magic and Elemental Affinity

Water Spirit Magic: Zegion specializes in water‑based spellwork, boosted by his evolution into a water‑affinity spiritual lifeform.

Water Manipulation: As a water‑attribute being, he can manipulate water freely, including the water within living bodies.

Since living beings are mostly water, this makes him terrifyingly hard to counter once he focuses on someone.

Signature Techniques

Distortion Field (Insect Void Domain)

Also called Insect Void Domain, this is a combined offensive‑defensive space distortion field.

It severs space, giving it both absolute defense and lethal offensive properties.

Although technically a unique‑level ability, it approaches ultimate‑skill territory in performance.

Even by itself, Rimuru judges it to grant a combat level comparable to or greater than Hinata Sakaguchi.

Dimensional Ray

Zegion opens five fingers and casually sweeps his hand downward, producing a space‑cutting wave.

Without space‑manipulation abilities, an opponent cannot even resist this phenomenon.

He uses this to instantly kill elite Empire soldiers such as Krishna and Minutes.

The attack is so fast and abstract that victims barely perceive they were attacked.

Dimensional Storm

Zegion unleashes a storm of high‑energy, rainbow‑colored waves.

This technique is powerful enough to easily defeat Dino, one of the original Seven Angels.

After inheriting power from Zeranus, this evolves into Devastator Storm, a far more destructive version.

The upgraded form is considered catastrophically dangerous even on a cosmic scale.

Dream’s End

Dream’s End is a curse‑type technique based on three components: Water and Lightning Control, Mind Control, and Fantasy World.

Zegion engraves a “curse mark” on the target’s soul.

If the victim ever acts against the caster’s will, the technique instantly destroys their soul core.

It does not impose fine‑grained behavioral restrictions, but functions as an absolute kill‑switch.

He uses this on Dino after defeating him, both as a restraint and as a measure of Dino’s potential.

For Zegion, the true purpose is to see whether a target can break the curse; anyone who can is considered near his level.

Veldora‑Style Combat Method – Void Fist

Originally a joke move imagined by Veldora Tempest, Zegion makes Void Fist real.

He compresses energy into his fist to the absolute limit, delivering a one‑hit kill‑class strike.

Using space‑time manipulation, he can transmit this compressed energy through any point of contact.

In battle against Zeranus, he channels Void Collapse energy through his fist and into Zeranus, inflicting massive damage.

Quartet Technique: Break Down Nostalgia

This is a four‑person combination ultimate: Break Down Nostalgia.

It is executed by Zegion, Benimaru, Diablo, and Dino together.

All four are among the world’s top combatants, and this technique has apocalyptic power.

If fired on a planet’s surface, it is said it could erase the entire planet and even engulf the solar system.

Resistances

Through his evolutions and ultimate skills, Zegion gains an extensive list of resistances:

Immunity to physical attacks

Immunity to abnormal status effects

Immunity to mental attacks

Immunity to natural phenomena

High resistance to both holy and demonic attacks

Combined with his exoskeleton and fantasy world, he becomes almost impossible to harm through conventional means.

Zegion’s raw combat ability is repeatedly framed as “broken” even by the standards of top‑tier beings.

He has been described as having power close to Rimuru’s light‑novel‑volume‑13 level, and as the labyrinth’s second‑strongest fighter after Veldora.

Key points showing his strength:

Empire Invasion (vol. 13): He instantly annihilates elite units of the invading Empire, killing their strongest operatives without effort.

Dino: He defeats Dino, one of the original Seven Angels and a world‑class fighter, with enough margin to place a curse mark on him and still be in control.

Karion: After evolving into a true Demon Lord‑class being, he one‑shots Karion, who is otherwise roughly on par with Benimaru (when Benimaru is off guard).

Rimuru had previously estimated Karion would not last three minutes against Zegion; in reality, Karion loses in about a second.

Benimaru and Diablo Comparison:

Benimaru is implied to be weaker than Zegion in a direct confrontation.

Even Diablo, one of the absolute strongest, acknowledges that defeating Zegion would be extremely difficult and that under some circumstances he might lose.

Other Primordial demons state outright that they cannot win against Zegion.

Original Demons: Among the original Seven Demons, only Guy Crimson and Diablo are excluded from the comparison; even so, Zegion stands on the top rung of power.

Middray: In terms of pure martial skill, Zegion matches Middray, who has devoted two thousand years to training.

Since Zegion’s basic physical parameters are superior, he is considered stronger overall despite the similar skill level.

Age vs. Mastery: Zegion has had less than a year in humanoid form at the time of these feats and is estimated to be under five years old in actual age.

His growth speed and talent are described as abnormal even by the standards of monsters and deities.

Veldora’s Evaluation: Veldora Tempest treats Zegion as a disciple and sparring partner.

In hand‑to‑hand combat alone, Zegion is said to rival Veldora’s technique, which is astonishing given that Veldora is a true Dragon.

Zeranus and the Transcendence Level

Zegion is the direct son of Insect Demon King Zeranus, king of the insect demons and a transcendent existence with EP over 114 million.

After being strengthened, Zeranus surpasses even Dragon‑class beings in power.

Zegion, however, completely overwhelms and defeats Zeranus in single combat.

In this battle, he opens the “corridor of souls” connected to Rimuru and circulates Void Collapse energy, turning himself into an engine of absolute destruction.

Zeranus eventually concedes defeat, recognizing that Zegion has surpassed him.

As proof, he entrusts Zegion with his ultimate skill King of Life (Sephirot), which Zegion then integrates into King of Illusions (Mephisto).

After this, Zegion enters a period of sleep to fully adapt to his new, even higher level of existence.

Curse Technique: Dream’s End (curse mark that destroys the soul core if betrayed)

Zegion is first introduced when Rimuru explores the Jura Great Forest.

There, Rimuru finds a battered beetle‑like monster desperately protecting a bee‑type magic insect, Apito.

Moved by his resolve, Rimuru saves him.

He repairs Zegion’s broken body using a portion of his own slime body, effectively rebuilding him with Rimuru’s cells.

At that time, Rimuru casually names him “Zegion” and describes him as a “cool bug that looks like a cross between a rhinoceros beetle and a stag beetle.”

This naming and reconstruction drastically change Zegion’s race into an extremely rare and powerful type, and he gains access to some of Rimuru’s skill architecture.

After recovery, Zegion is assigned to guard the settlement of the dryad‐like Treyni and the tree spirits.

Because he does not live inside Tempest’s main city, his early appearances are limited, though he technically becomes one of Rimuru’s subordinates earlier than Diablo.

Timeline‑wise, Zegion appears around the same general period as Milim Nava’s initial involvement, meaning he predates Diablo’s arrival and even meets Rimuru before Youm Farmenas becomes a major allied figure.

Insect Demon Lineage

Later, it is revealed that Zegion is actually the direct son of Insect Demon King Zeranus, ruler of the insect demons.

Zeranus treats his children merely as tools, devoid of affection.

Zegion and Apito eventually escape from him and flee to the “axis world” where Rimuru resides.

This escape sets the stage for Zegion’s encounter with Rimuru and his future growth as one of Tempest’s strongest guardians.

1. Original Form – Battle‑scarred Insect Beast

Found in the Jura Forest, wounded and protecting Apito.

Named and healed by Rimuru using a portion of Rimuru’s body.

2. Guardian of the Treefolk

Assigned to guard the settlement of Treyni and the dryad tribe.

Has minimal on‑stage presence at this time, but is already an early and “senior” subordinate of Rimuru.

3. Chrysalis and Insect‑Type Majin

With Rimuru’s evolution into a Demon Lord, Zegion receives a massive gift and enters a cocoon state.

He later emerges as a fully humanoid insect‑type majin, gaining a slender humanoid body with a black exoskeleton and a crimson horn.

4. Labyrinth Floor Guardian

Treyni recommends Zegion to Ramiris as a boss for the newly created underground labyrinth.

He becomes the boss of the 80th floor and one of the “Labyrinth Ten Lords,” in fact their de‑facto strongest member.

5. Insect God: Upper Holy Demonoid Spirit – Water Spirit Bug

By volume 12, his complete metamorphosis into an insect‑type majin finishes, and he evolves further into a spiritual lifeform.

He becomes an insect god‑class being with water attribute, half spiritual due to retaining his exoskeleton as a physical combat body.

6. Twelve Guardian Kings – Phantom King (Mist Lord)

Rimuru grants him part of his own soul, triggering an awakening evolution.

Zegion becomes a higher insect god and one of the “Twelve Guardian Kings,” taking the title Phantom King (Mist Lord).

7. Defeat of Zeranus and Phantom Spirit Bug

Zegion battles and utterly crushes his father Zeranus, a being whose transcendent power even surpasses Dragons.

After this victory, he inherits Zeranus’s ultimate skill and evolves further into Pinnacle Holy Demonoid Spirit – Phantom Spirit Bug, then enters a deep sleep to assimilate the power.

Throughout these stages, his combat capabilities rise from powerful monster to world‑class apex being.

By the time of his fight with Zeranus, he has fully transcended the usual limits even among Demon Lords and Dragons.

Zegion’s main duty is the defense of Ramiris’s underground labyrinth, one of Tempest’s most important strategic assets.

The labyrinth’s internal defense systems and deterrence value largely rely on his presence.

Because he takes this duty extremely seriously and is proud of it, he rarely leaves the labyrinth.

As a result, despite his extreme strength, he doesn’t appear in many scenes outside of labyrinth‑related events.

His low external profile means that almost no information about him leaks to the outside world.

New enemies who meet him for the first time are usually annihilated instantly, without time to grasp his abilities.

The few who survive—such as Dino early on—try to warn others about him.

However, because Dino is usually unreliable, others tend to ignore his warnings, leading to disasters for arrogant foes like Vega and even Zeranus himself.

Even powerful masterminds like Feldway and Jahil, who know that insect demon survivors like Zegion and Apito are under Rimuru and present in the labyrinth, underestimate them.

They are completely blindsided when Zegion exceeds Zeranus and reshapes the battle in the labyrinth.

Rimuru Tempest

Rimuru is Zegion’s absolute master and the center of his worldview.

Zegion’s loyalty is unwavering, and he sees all of his strength, evolution, and training as offerings to Rimuru.

Rimuru’s cells form the basis of Zegion’s reconstructed body, and Rimuru’s skill network (through Wisdom Lord and later Raphael/Ciel) optimizes his exoskeleton and abilities.

Later, Rimuru entrusts Zegion with part of his own soul, allowing Zegion to awaken as an insect god and receive the Phantom King title.

Zegion is deeply offended if enemies mistake him for Rimuru, feeling they insult Rimuru by equating someone as “lowly” as himself with such a “great Demon Lord.”

When this happens, he responds with overwhelming, instant violence.

Apito

Apito is the bee‑type magic insect that Zegion protects at the beginning of the story.

Their bond is strong enough that Zegion risks death to shield her from harm.

The two are fellow survivors of Zeranus’s brutal rule and escapees from the insect demon world.

They both evolve under Rimuru’s leadership and become core elements of the labyrinth’s defense.

Zegion quietly worries about Apito when she runs into trouble, such as when she gets arrested in comedic side stories.

Their dynamic shows Zegion’s protective, older‑brother side.

Veldora Tempest

Veldora treats Zegion like a favorite pupil in martial arts.

The “Veldora‑style Combat Method – Void Fist” originates as Veldora’s fantasy skill, which Zegion then makes real.

In close combat, Zegion is evaluated as nearly equal to Veldora in pure technique.

Their training sessions, combined with Rimuru’s optimization, are key to Zegion’s meteoric rise.

Diablo and Benimaru

Zegion is usually grouped with Diablo and Benimaru as Rimuru’s three strongest subordinates.

In various confrontations, Zegion is suggested to be stronger than Benimaru and at least a credible threat even to Diablo.

Diablo, with all his pride, openly recognizes that fighting Zegion would be dangerous.

The other primordial demons treat Zegion as an opponent they cannot defeat.

Benimaru respects Zegion’s strength and frequently collaborates with him in high‑level operations.

Their cooperation culminates in the quartet technique Break Down Nostalgia, where both fight on equal footing with the likes of Diablo and Dino.

Dino

Dino is both an opponent and a reluctant partner.

Zegion easily defeats him and brands him with Dream’s End, measuring Dino’s potential through whether he can break the curse.

Later, Dino participates alongside Zegion, Benimaru, and Diablo in their devastating four‑way combination technique.

Their relationship oscillates between wary respect and comedic exasperation, especially from Zegion’s side.

Geld

Zegion’s personality is often compared to Geld’s serious, dutiful nature.

Both are hardworking, reliable, and quietly kind, making them emotionally stable pillars within Tempest’s leadership.

Zegion appears relatively early in the story but only becomes prominent much later, especially in the late‑novel arcs.

Many anime‑only viewers or casual readers hear his name and think “Who?” until they see his later feats.

In spin‑off works, before his metamorphosis, he appears as a giant beetle often carrying a watermelon.

The image of a huge beetle training hard after being beaten up by Milim Nava—to protect Apito’s honey offerings to Rimuru—is both comedic and strangely touching.

His determination to become stronger after being stomped by Milim is one of the indirect triggers that lead to him becoming one of the most powerful beings in the series.

In the main anime adaptation, Zegion has so far only appeared briefly in the comedic diary‑style side series.

His full insect‑majin form has not yet debuted in the main anime storyline.

During a masquerade festival in Ingracia, someone cosplays as Zegion in his majin form.

This is presumably because Ramiris produced a promotional video for the labyrinth that includes Zegion, allowing people outside Tempest to see his humanoid insect appearance.
