Character Introduction
EditAssistant Inspector. The captain of the Swordsman Police Squad and a practitioner of the Jigen-ryu style. In the CD book version, his first name is "Yoshitaka." He hails from Satsuma and has a strong sense of elitism, looking down on lower-ranking policemen and ordinary citizens who are not permitted to carry swords, making him an arrogant and ruthless individual with not a shred of justice. As a former Ishin Shishi, he takes advantage of the fact that the chief cannot act strongly against him, engaging in violent and disorderly conduct. He attempts to provoke Kenshin by cutting Kaoru's clothes to humiliate her and arresting and attempting to brutally murder a townsman who reprimanded his tyranny, aiming to cut Kenshin in self-defense. However, he is completely defeated after his subordinates are easily dispatched. In the original work, this incident leads to the disbandment of the Swordsman Police Squad. In the first anime series, his tyranny is emphasized, and he attempts to execute three civilians (one a shoplifter, the other two a shopkeeper and his daughter who defended the shoplifter) and Yahiko, who defied them, as a warning. After his defeat by Kenshin, he and his subordinates are punished by Yamagata Aritomo, who witnessed the entire incident. He reappears in the first volume of the novel "Sanosuke and the Brocade Picture," where he conspires with Someya to stage an armed uprising but suffers a second defeat in a rematch with Kenshin, who has caught on to their scheme.
