Character Setting

Edit

Chomusuke is a mysterious black cat with wings who belongs to Megumin. She looks like a cute pet, but she is actually the physical half of the evil goddess Wolbach's soul. She was first brought home by Megumin's little sister Komekko, who wanted to eat her for dinner, but Megumin saved her and made her a pet. Chomusuke is gentle, shy, and dislikes Aqua, but is very attached to Megumin and Kazuma Satou. Her true identity is a powerful beast that was once sealed away in the Crimson Demon Village. After the defeat of Wolbach, Chomusuke begins to change and becomes fond of baths.

Chomusuke looks like a small black kitten with a cross-shaped mark on her forehead and feathered black wings on her back.

She is mostly seen flying or sitting near Megumin.

Even though she looks normal, she can breathe fire and fly, making her different from regular cats.

Chomusuke is friendly and calm, but also very shy and timid.

She gets along well with Megumin, Kazuma Satou, Yunyun, and Darkness, but she especially dislikes Aqua.

She often avoids anyone she finds scary, like Komekko, who once tried to eat her.

Strangely, she does not like the magical animal Emperor Zell, especially because he carries Aqua's power.

Chomusuke is quiet and does not cause much trouble, but can do special tricks, like flying or breathing fire when taught by Cecily.

After Wolbach merges with her, she becomes fond of taking baths and reacts to the word "Wolbach."

Chomusuke was first found by Komekko, Megumin's younger sister, who caught her to eat.

Megumin, feeling bad for the kitten, rescued her and made her a pet.

At first, Chomusuke did not have a name and was simply called "Megumin's other half" at school, confusing people so much that Megumin was called "Fake Megumin."

Yunyun gave the temporary name "Kuro," but among Crimson Demons that was a strange choice, so eventually Megumin decided to name her "Chomusuke."

Despite her name, Chomusuke is a girl.

Chomusuke can breathe fire, sometimes lightning, and can fly with her wings.

She is no ordinary cat, and her magic comes from her true identity as half of the evil goddess Wolbach.

She can react to Wolbach-related words and her body starts to develop after Wolbach merges with her.

Chomusuke is closest to Megumin, who saved and cares for her.

She is also fond of Kazuma Satou and Yunyun, and quickly becomes attached to them.

She refuses to go near Aqua, and avoids Emperor Zell, who carries Aqua's magic power.

She is afraid of Komekko because Komekko tried to eat her in the past.

She does not like clergy, as mentioned by Chris, since she is linked to magical and evil forces.

Chomusuke's Origins and Names

Chomusuke was first brought home by Komekko, who caught her for dinner.

Megumin saved Chomusuke and began taking her to school, where everyone thought the cat was an important part of Megumin.

This caused confusion, and the other students started calling the cat "Megumin" and Megumin herself "Fake Megumin."

Yunyun gave Chomusuke the name "Kuro," but Megumin later renamed her "Chomusuke" since previous names were strange for Crimson Demons.

Hidden Powers and Identity

Though she looks like a normal kitten, Chomusuke often breathes fire and can fly.

Kazuma Satou noticed this and tried to question Megumin and Yunyun, but both denied anything strange, insisting she is a "normal cat."

Kazuma wonders if she is actually a catgirl or another magical being in disguise.

Revelation in Spin-Offs

In the spin-off "Explosions on This Wonderful World!" and the original Volume 9, it is revealed that Chomusuke is actually the beast half of the evil goddess Wolbach, who was sealed in the Crimson Demon Village.

When young Megumin broke the seal, Chomusuke separated from Wolbach, lost most of her power, and attacked Megumin in frustration, but was quickly defeated by an explosion magic and re-sealed.

Seven years later, Komekko broke the seal again, and Chomusuke became Megumin's pet.

Encounters With Demons

Higher-ranking demons, like Arnes and Horst, as well as devils disguised as people, often appear to try and capture Chomusuke because of her connection to Wolbach.

Changes After Wolbach's Defeat

After Megumin defeats Wolbach in Volume 9, Wolbach is absorbed by Chomusuke.

As a result, Chomusuke starts to enjoy baths and even reacts when called "Wolbach."

She also begins to grow and show small changes.

Affection for Lazy People

It's mentioned by Wolbach that, since she was the goddess of sloth, Chomusuke becomes attached to lazy people—this explains why she is especially fond of Kazuma Satou.

Special Encounters

In some short stories, Chris says that Chomusuke dislikes priests because of her magical and dark origins, which could explain her dislike of Aqua and why she avoids Darkness as well.

However, there is a time in Volume 16 where Chomusuke pretends to like Aqua to help delay her from leaving home.

Appearance in Other Series

Chomusuke appears as a transfer student in "Isekai Quartet" Season 2, where she does funny and not-so-normal things like breathing fire in the science lab or throwing huge balls during dodgeball games.

Other characters, like Subaru, notice her odd actions, but Megumin and others keep pretending she is just an ordinary cat.

Despite having a cute-sounding name, Chomusuke is a girl cat.

She rarely warms up to anyone except Megumin and Kazuma Satou.

She was named by Megumin after some naming confusion.

Chomusuke strongly dislikes Aqua for unknown reasons.

She loves lazy people because of her link to Wolbach, the goddess of sloth.

  • "Meow." (She is mostly silent and meows like a normal cat.)
  • "Bang!" (When breathing fire after being taught by Cecily.)

Chomusuke's true form is said to look like the "Rookie Killer" monster that Kazuma Satou and others have faced before.

Her story is important in both the original novels and the anime series.

She adds a lot of humor and mystery to the group of main characters.
