Reisuke Houjou is the youngest of the diary owners in The Future Diary, just 4 years old (5 in the anime). He acts very cute and innocent, but hides a sharp and cunning mind. He's known for carrying two hand puppets (one boy, one girl) and using his drawing-based future diary, "Hyper Vision Diary", which is considered the weakest among all diaries. After losing his parents in an incident, he stays with the Amano family and tries to kill Yukiteru Amano and Yuno Gasai as part of a dangerous game. Despite his dark plans, his complex feelings about family and rivalry make him a unique and memorable character.
Reisuke Houjou is a small boy, only 4 years old (5 in the anime).
He usually carries a pair of hand puppets, one male and one female, and often wears them on both hands.
Although Reisuke may look cute and pure, he is actually smart, cunning, and a bit twisted.
He often uses the word "Elitist!" and likes to act smarter than adults.
He can be cruel, showing a child’s natural harshness mixed with a strong wish to win.
He usually talks to his puppets and even makes plans with them when he is alone.
Reisuke is the son of Rea Amano's coworker.
His parents were followers of the Omekata Religion led by Tsubaki Kasugano.
They died during the Omekata incident, so Reisuke was temporarily cared for by the Amano family.
Because his parents frequently fought and were not kind to him, Reisuke’s view of family and relationships is very complicated.
He doesn’t hate Yukiteru Amano or Yuno Gasai, even though they were responsible for his parents' deaths, and sometimes even likes them.
He feels grateful to Rea Amano, who takes care of him kindly.
Reisuke owns the "Hyper Vision Diary"—a future diary in the form of a picture journal.
This diary can record three predictions about his own future each day: morning, afternoon, and evening.
The diary only shows what happens to him, and the predictions are just short sentences with childish drawings.
Compared to the other diaries, it provides very little information and is considered the weakest.
However, it has a special effect: the hand-drawn images come alive, showing the future as a mini-movie.
- Parents: Members of the Omekata Religion; often cold to Reisuke and fought regularly. He misses them, even as he calls them "useless."
- Rea Amano: Reisuke thinks of her as a kind "aunt."
- Yukiteru Amano & Yuno Gasai: He tries to kill them as a game, but doesn’t hold a personal grudge and sometimes shows kindness.
- In the third world, both of his parents survive, and Reisuke lives happily with them.
Living with the Amano Family
After Reisuke loses his parents because of the Omekata Religion incident, he is sent to live with Yukiteru Amano's family for a while.
He pretends to be an innocent kid but secretly plans to take revenge on Yuno Gasai, who caused his parents' deaths.
Deadly Games
Reisuke sets up dangerous traps around the Amano house.
He tries to kill both Yukiteru and Yuno.
He uses cyanide gas to knock out Yukiteru and then challenges Yuno to a deadly game by hiding the antidote.
Yuno manages to beat him with help from a very brave Yukiteru.
Final Moments
After being stabbed with a knife along with his diary by Yuno, Reisuke gives her the antidote.
He predicts that Yuno will have to fight Yukiteru in the end, and hopes Yuno will win.
He disappears, leaving a mysterious warning.
Side Stories and Other Worlds
Reisuke’s backstory is explored further in the side manga Mosaic.
It reveals that the puppets he loves so much were gifts from his parents during rare happy moments.
In The Future Diary: Redial, in the third timeline, his parents are still alive and Reisuke enjoys a happier life.
He even works as Aru Akise’s assistant, hoping to become a future detective!
Reisuke’s name comes from Ceres, the Roman goddess of harvest.
His favorite saying is “Elitist!”
His diary is called "Hyper Vision Diary."
The puppets are special to him because they were gifts from his parents when they were briefly happy.
Even though his diary is weak and he’s just a child, Reisuke comes up with clever and scary plans.
"Elitist!"
"I will protect Rei-kun myself!"
"If you don't give me snacks, I'll play a prank on you!"
Reisuke appears in bonus comics.
It is shown that he made a deal to join the diary game only if he could meet aliens, and Mur Mur took him on a UFO trip.
Author Sakae Esuno has said Reisuke is one of his favorite characters and likes the side story that features him.
