Shogen Hirano is a notorious bandit leader from "The Elusive Samurai," known for his ruthless outlook on life and his belief that stealing and hurting people is his true calling. Originally from a noble family, he turned to a life of crime after being denied inheritance, earning infamy as a cunning and violent outlaw. Key plot points include his vicious raids, a dramatic redemption, and his final battle with Tokiyuki Hojo, where he meets his end but reveals a complex and haunted heart.

Shogen Hirano wears the garb of a monk but is clad in heavy armor, making him look imposing and fearsome. He carries two swords and has a look that combines the fierceness of a wild bandit with the discipline of a skilled warrior.

Shogen is cruel and sadistic, finding joy in stealing and causing pain, especially to children. He looks down on virtues like justice and kindness, often mocking anything considered good or holy. However, beneath his harsh exterior, he can be calm and smart, using the land and clever tactics to his advantage. After being given a second chance, he feels guilty for his past crimes and grows kinder, especially to the people under his care.

Shogen was born as the second son of a samurai family. Because he wasn’t the heir, he was told to serve his older brother, which he refused. Hoping to make a name for himself in battle, he left home, joined the army under Masashige Kusunoki, but didn’t win any glory. Feeling left out and bitter, he formed the ant bandit gang and started raiding villages for profit.

Shogen is skilled in sword fighting, especially with two swords. He is a master at surprise attacks and using the mountains to his advantage, making him very dangerous even against stronger armies. He is also clever, using both strength and strategy.

He serves Sadamune Ogasawara, who recruits him and his gang for their ability to move freely and attack unexpectedly. Shogen has an important connection with Tokiyuki Hojo, his main rival, and respects him deeply by the end. He’s also tied to Masashige Kusunoki, who once gave him a chance.

Lead of the Ant Bandit Gang

Shogen leads the notorious ant bandit gang, a group that kidnaps children and raids villages. He enjoys watching people suffer and has no remorse for his crimes. His attacks on the Suwa region are part of a strategy to weaken it for invasion.

Facing Tokiyuki Hojo

When trying to expand his raids into new areas, Shogen and his gang face off against the escaping young lord Tokiyuki Hojo and his group. Tokiyuki lures Shogen into a trap, forcing him to fight in a small space. Shogen is tricked and, as he loses blood, starts to see Tokiyuki in a new, almost holy light. He falls unconscious but is saved from death by Sadamune Ogasawara.

Redemption and Guilt

Allowed to live if he gives up crime, Shogen is made the lord of a village. As he rules with kindness, he starts to regret all the terrible things he’s done. People in the village come to like him, but Shogen begins to see visions of all the children he hurt in the past.

The Final Battle

When the great uprising begins in Shinano, Shogen tries to outsmart Tokiyuki one last time with a surprise mountain attack. Tokiyuki sees through his plans and sets a fiery trap. In the decisive fight, Shogen faces Tokiyuki and Fubuki together. He is finally beaten using a special double-blade attack. As he dies, Shogen remembers the promise he made to a village girl to come back safe—a wish he cannot keep. He dies feeling both regret and peace, glad Tokiyuki grew into a strong warrior.

True name: Shogen Hirano. He was thought to be executed in history, but in the story, he escapes thanks to Masashige Kusunoki.
His nickname comes from a mistake Masashige Kusunoki made when reading his name.
