12 years ago, at Makino's tavern, he hassled Shanks and looked down on him as a coward for not fighting back despite the insults. Later, when he returned to the tavern, he insulted Shanks and his crew and defeated Luffy who stood up to him, attempting to kill him. However, when Shanks and his crew appeared and defeated all his men, Higuma panicked, seized the opportunity to capture Luffy, and fled to the sea. He dropped Luffy into the sea, but was immediately eaten by a sea monster along with the boat he was on.
