Rigurd

Rigurd is the former elder of a goblin village and the first person in this world to make contact with Rimuru Tempest after Rimuru’s reincarnation.

He initially appears as a frail, elderly goblin village chief who approaches Rimuru for protection against rampaging monsters.

After Rimuru grants him a name, he becomes “Rigurd” and evolves from a goblin into a hobgoblin.

This name-bestowal dramatically restores his youth and strength, turning him into a towering, muscular middle‑aged warrior-like figure.

Because of this extreme before-and-after change, fans began calling the transformation “Rigurd Shock,” a phrase later adopted jokingly even by the official social media accounts.

The term is used whenever another character’s evolution shows a similarly drastic upgrade in appearance.

Rigurd is voiced by Kenpei Yamamoto in the anime adaptation.

Within the story, he is regarded as one of Rimuru’s oldest and most trusted subordinates.

Rigurd starts as the village chief of a small goblin settlement that lives in fear of nearby threats such as direwolves.

He is the first to kneel and pledge loyalty to Rimuru, setting the tone for Rimuru’s later relationships with other races.

Rimuru names Rigurd after naming Rigurd’s son Rigur, making Rigurd one of the earliest named goblins.

The naming triggers an evolution throughout the village, turning the goblins into hobgoblins with improved physiques and abilities.

Along with receiving his name, Rigurd is also granted the title of Goblin Lord.

As nearby goblin groups later rally under Rimuru’s banner, Rigurd’s position is effectively elevated further, and he is recognized as a Goblin King.

He is present from the earliest days of the settlement that will become the city of Tempest, helping it grow from a rough village into a well-organized nation.

Because he has been with Rimuru since the beginning, he is often referred to as one of the “founding members” of the Jura Tempest Federation.

Before being named, Rigurd is a frail, hunched elder who relies on a staff to walk, with his life expectancy already nearly exhausted.

After evolution, he becomes a tall, broad-shouldered hobgoblin with powerful muscles, a deep, booming voice, and a robust presence.

His newly regained youth makes him look like a seasoned, sturdy middle‑aged man rather than an old goblin.

Despite his intimidating physique, he maintains a humble and deeply loyal demeanor toward Rimuru.

Rigurd loves celebrations and feasts and will seize almost any excuse to hold a banquet in Tempest.

This enthusiasm for parties makes him one of the main “mood-makers” of the city and contributes to the friendly, communal atmosphere of the nation.

He is earnest, straightforward, and somewhat comical when he overreacts to events or overdoes formalities around Rimuru.

At the same time, he shows a serious, responsible side in administrative matters and in defending Rimuru’s honor.

Although Rigurd primarily serves as a civil official and rarely appears on the front lines, he is far from weak.

By the time of volume 2 of the light novels, his combat ability is already considered equivalent to B‑rank.

Rigurd continues to train in secret, not neglecting his physical conditioning despite his administrative duties.

By around volume 13, his strength surpasses A‑rank, putting him on par with high-level warriors in the setting.

During the conflict involving Holy Knights, Rigurd volunteers to join the interception force, showing that he is willing and able to fight when needed.

At the opening festival of Tempest, he even challenges Gozurl and Mezurl, who had shown disrespect toward Rimuru, revealing his martial side and fierce loyalty.

His toughness is highlighted when he manages to remain undaunted even after having part of his face blown away by a Demon Lord’s lieutenant.

This resilience, combined with his training, justifies his reputation as a “hidden martial type” despite his bureaucratic role.

As the settlement evolves into the Jura Tempest Federation, Rigurd becomes a central figure in its internal governance.

Rimuru entrusts him with the position of Goblin Lord and later effectively as a Goblin King, giving him authority over goblin-kind within the nation.

Rigurd is responsible for the administrative management of the city of Tempest.

He works in tandem with other named goblins who each take charge of specific branches of government.

Lugurd, who is in charge of the judiciary,

Regurd, who is in charge of legislation,

Logurd, who is in charge of administration, and

Ririna, who oversees production and industrial projects (voiced by Reina Kondo),

Rigurd helps run the core internal affairs of the Jura Tempest Federation.

This system effectively divides the government into judiciary, legislative, executive, and production management sectors under Rimuru’s overall rule.

Within this structure, Rigurd is a senior statesman and coordinator who ties these different branches together.

His long experience as a village chief and his early bond with Rimuru make him a natural mediator and organizer.

He is often seen welcoming guests, organizing public works, and ensuring Tempest’s day‑to‑day operations run smoothly.

His leadership is one of the reasons the once-primitive goblin village is able to develop into a thriving, multi-species nation.

Rigurd’s most important relationship is with Rimuru Tempest, whom he regards with absolute loyalty and respect.

He sees Rimuru not only as a ruler but also as the benefactor who saved his village and restored his youth and strength.

He is also the father of Rigur, another early-named goblin who becomes a key officer under Rimuru.

The father–son pair symbolize the old goblin tribe’s transition into a more powerful and civilized community.

As a senior administrator, Rigurd works closely with Lugurd, Regurd, Logurd, and Ririna in managing Tempest’s institutions.

This team of goblin lords represents the bureaucratic backbone of the country and often acts collectively when implementing Rimuru’s policies.

His warm, banquet-loving nature helps him maintain friendly relations with many other residents of Tempest.

He is particularly protective of those who show respect for Rimuru and Tempest’s laws and stern toward anyone who insults or underestimates his lord.
