Shinsuke Hyoudou is a major character from the manga series "Sengoku Youko" by Satoshi Mizukami. He starts as a powerless young man who becomes an important protector and key figure among his friends. Despite being a regular person with no special power or sword skill at the start, his honest heart and growth make him very special. Over time, he learns new abilities, builds strong relationships, and takes on big responsibilities. He appears in both parts of the story and is known for his unique way of interacting with both humans and yoma (the "dark ones"), making him stand out in the series.
Shinsuke Hyoudou looks like an ordinary young man with no remarkable features. As the story goes on, his appearance changes—especially after facing deep anger and hatred—giving him a more serious and intense look.
Honest and Simple-Hearted
At first, Shinsuke Hyoudou is not brave or strong. He can talk big but is quick to lose courage when things get tough. Despite this, he cannot ignore unfairness or watch others suffer. He values friendship and is loyal to his friends.
Emotional Growth
After facing loss and betrayal, his personality changes. He becomes more serious and sometimes shows a darker side. However, he always keeps a kind heart and still cares deeply about others, especially children and the weak.
Humble and Self-Reflective
Shinsuke often doubts himself and can become self-critical. He does not think highly of his own skills, but this makes his growth feel more real and inspiring.
Neutral Between Humans and Yoma
He stands between humans and yoma, believing both sides are not so different at heart. He does not judge others by appearance and tries to build good relationships with everyone.
Shinsuke Hyoudou was born as a farmer’s son, originally named "Takekichi from Yagusa Village." He wanted to become a martial artist, but a visiting samurai once told him he was just an ordinary person. However, Shinsuke took the advice to "become a fool" (meaning not to give up and just keep trying), and so he practiced sword swings every day until he gained real skill.
Later, he gets taught by Higan on how to use the Spirit Sword and interacts with many powerful people. In the space between the first and second parts of the story, he trains under the Mountain God, learns sword skills, spirit power, and how to work with the world of spirits.
Skills
- Sword Skills: Although he started without talent, daily practice gave him the power to split helmets with his sword.
- Spirit Techniques: He learns to handle spirit power and other techniques after training with the Mountain God.
Weapons
Demon Sword Arabuki
- A magic sword that controls wind.
- It can attack, defend, and even allow flight.
- At first, Shinsuke Hyoudou cannot use it well due to his lack of talent. Through talking to the sword's spirit and facing many challenges, he eventually masters it.
- Arabuki is a special sword passed down from Raidō Zanzō’s family but is given to Shinsuke Hyoudou.
- Even when the sword breaks, its spirit and some power remain, and Shinsuke officially becomes its new master. The broken blade is made into a small sword called "Itakebi" and is given to Tsukiko.
Special Moves
- Tenchiwari (Heaven and Earth Slash): A powerful downward strike that can split enemies in one blow.
- Fuubakujou (Wind Binding Rope): Uses wind to restrain enemies. This move works no matter how strong the enemy is, as it catches the key power points.
Friends
- Shakugan: He tries hard to protect her and later marries her.
- Tama: Travels separately from her but cares for her.
- Senya: He becomes like an older brother to Senya, protecting and helping him.
- Tsukiko: Travels with her and is respected by her and villagers.
- Raidō Zanzō: Gives him the Arabuki sword.

Early Journey and Training
Shinsuke Hyoudou first appears as a wandering martial artist, but he is actually the son of a farmer. Trying to join a samurai as a student, he is told he is a normal person and rejected. He still keeps practicing sword swings every day until he becomes very skilled.
Learning from Higan
Higan teaches him how to use the Spirit Sword. Shinsuke Hyoudou tries to help and protect Shakugan but fails, leading to deep anger and sadness in him. His personality changes, and he begins to show a more serious side while still trying to do good.
Training with the Mountain God
After the first part, Shinsuke Hyoudou becomes a disciple of the Mountain God, learning sword fighting, spirit power, and dealing with the spirit world. This training breaks his pride but gives him important new skills.
Life in Tsukiko's Village
In the second part, he is chased by the Mountain God for protecting Senya and escapes with him. When he arrives at Tsukiko's village, he becomes respected and later changes his name to "Shinsuke Kazematsuri." He takes care of the villagers and even helps feed and accept yoma into the village, gaining the trust of both humans and dark beings.
Searching for Friends
When his bond to the land is lifted, he leaves the village along with Tsukiko and Hanatora (including Kokugetsusai who possesses Hanatora). He learns Shakugan and others have been attacked and kidnapped by the "People of Nothingness." He journeys to save them and fights many dangers with his friends.
Final Battles and New Life
He helps defeat Senbon Yoko (Thousand Fox of Darkness), settles his rivalry with Yazen, and finally marries Shakugan. He becomes one of the founders of Tsukiko's village, turning it into a peaceful and hidden place protected by magic, together with Senya.
- Even as a human, Shinsuke Hyoudou is respected by both humans and yoma.
- He is known as "the One Who Sits with Darkness."
- He is the only main character who appears throughout the whole story.
- His talent for talking with yoma and winning their trust is a unique gift only he has.
- He is voiced by Takeshi Koyama in the adaptation.
