He once died along with his crew when the Rumbar Pirates were annihilated, but was resurrected by the power of the Yomi Yomi no Mi he had eaten in his lifetime. However, his soul was delayed in returning, causing his body to become skeletal, turning him into a bone human... He wandered the seas alone for 50 years until he met Luffy and the others. He becomes a member of the crew in order to meet Laboon, the island whale he promised to see again.
