During the retreat from the failed capture of the Female Titan in the expedition outside the walls, he fell into Annie's trap and revealed their location with a smoke signal, leading to his death when Annie ambushed and slashed his nape. In the anime version, there is a depiction of his mother and grandfather (this depiction was cut in the second part of the theatrical anime "Wings of Freedom."
