This character makes their first appearance in the second part of the series. When Senya leaves the village, he encounters this dark being, which has the appearance of a small animal. After sharing rice balls with Senya, the being starts accompanying him. The name Nau was given by Tsukiko, based on the character's habit of ending his sentences with "nau."
Like Senya, Nau has no memory of his past, including his own name. When Nau consumes a large amount of water, his spiritual power temporarily increases, causing his form to transform. In this state, he becomes capable of flight and significantly increases in size, allowing Senya and Tsukiko to ride on his back.
It was once believed that Nau was a water god of a certain marsh, but after the battle to free the Thousand Demon Foxes, he revealed that he had recovered his memories. In truth, he was a separated spirit of a local land god who had become a mad god and was defeated by Senya. The shock of his original body's defeat caused Nau to lose his memories. He then healed the withered marsh at the center of his domain using spiritual water obtained from the King of All Things, thus regaining his role as a land god. As a result, he parted ways with Senya and the others.
