He is a staff member of the Aoiya and is usually called "Kuro." He has a large build and short hair. He skillfully wields tekko ring shuriken and, like Hannya and Misao Makimachi, is a practitioner of Oniwabanshū-Style Martial Arts. Among the regular soldiers who serve under Shishio, he possesses enough skill to easily handle even elite fighters.
In the first anime adaptation, he reappears during the Black Knights arc. Together with Misao Makimachi and Shirojou, he fights alongside Kenshin Himura and others against the Sanada Ninja Army, but due to injuries, he is forced to withdraw from the battle.
In Volume 22 of the Complete Edition, the color of his headband is changed to black, and the end of the headband hangs down on the left side of his face. The hair on the top of his head is permed, giving him a more relaxed appearance.
