Character Setting

Edit

Gareth Landrock is a dwarven veteran adventurer of the Loki Familia in the series *Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?*, recognized as one of the familia’s three leaders alongside Finn Deimne and Riveria Ljos Alf and famed as a first-class adventurer whose strength and endurance rank among the greatest in Orario.

Name: Gareth Landrock

Gender: Male

Race: Dwarf

Age: 56

Height: 151 cm

Occupation: Adventurer

Affiliation: Loki Familia

Level: 6 → 7

Alias (Second Name): Heavy Might (Elgarm)

Voice Actor (Japanese): Kenji Nomura

Gareth is one of the oldest members and de facto executives of the Loki Familia, counted as one of the “Three Commanders” with Finn Deimne and Riveria Ljos Alf.

He is a first-class adventurer whose body is so tough and powerful that he is said to rival anyone in Orario in terms of raw strength and endurance.

At the start of the main story he is Level 6 and later ranks up to Level 7 after the suppression of the Enyo turmoil.

He began life as a miner in the dwarven settlement of Ronza, but his craving for fierce battles eventually led him to join Loki’s children.

When the Loki Familia was first formed, tensions between races made his relationship with Riveria (an elf) extremely bad, and he even looked down on Finn at the beginning.

Over time, shared battles and experiences turned them from hostile rivals into irreplaceable comrades.

Gareth is also long-time “rotten fate” drinking and brawling buddies with Mia Grand, the former captain of the Freya Familia and current owner of The Benevolent Mistress tavern.

Most of the time he stays in the background as a senior guardian who watches over younger members, but when he steps onto the battlefield, he becomes a pure front-line powerhouse and the one who holds the rear during retreats.

Gareth is the very picture of a dwarf: a lover of alcohol, loud laughter, and straight talk.

He is brave and bold, disliking fussy words or overly delicate behavior.

He originally sought “hot-blooded battles,” and that desire still drives his combative side.

Anyone who harms his comrades or challenges him head-on is dealt with mercilessly, but this doesn’t make him a savage—he is fundamentally warm and thoughtful.

Unlike Finn, who sometimes gets trapped in worrying about his “heroic reputation,” or Riveria, whose “elf pride” can make her inflexible, Gareth rarely becomes extreme in his thinking.

Among the three commanders he is the most emotionally stable and grounded, often acting as the steady pillar between them.

As a senior figure he observes younger members calmly and steps in to admonish them when they get too emotional or reckless.

He is blunt, occasionally grumbling like an old man, yet his guidance is trusted because it comes from long experience and genuine care.

Gareth has brown eyes and brown hair, with a long, impressive beard typical of a dwarf warrior.

Even in his younger days he had a very “old-looking” face, and his appearance has barely changed over the nearly three decades shown in flashbacks.

He has a stocky build: long torso, short legs, and heavily muscled limbs.

In battle he wears armor and a horned helmet reminiscent of Viking warriors, emphasizing his role as a front-line tank and crusher.

Loki

Loki is his main god and the head of the Loki Familia.

Gareth not only serves her as an adventurer but also drinks with her frequently, often accompanying her to taverns as a close drinking companion.

Finn Deimne and Riveria Ljos Alf

Finn and Riveria are Gareth’s fellow founding members and comrades-in-arms in the Loki Familia.

At the time of the familia’s creation, racial frictions—especially between dwarf and elf—made relations with Riveria hostile, and Gareth was openly contemptuous of Finn’s attempts at mediation.

Through countless battles and years together, the three came to understand and respect one another deeply.

They now form the core command of the Loki Familia, sharing responsibilities and trust at the highest level.

Tsubaki Collbrande

Tsubaki Collbrande is Orario’s top-class blacksmith and has a direct contract with Gareth.

She insists that he use only weapons forged by her, and he in turn relies heavily on her craftsmanship, though he is sometimes exasperated by her freewheeling personality.

Many of his legendary axes are products of this partnership, repeatedly reforged after being destroyed by Gareth’s own monstrous strength.

Mia Grand

Mia Grand, former captain of the Freya Familia and current owner of the tavern The Benevolent Mistress, is Gareth’s long-time “bad friend” and brawling partner.

In the past they often got into intense fights, and when she retired from adventuring, Gareth showed hints of loneliness, missing those rowdy days.

Other Notable Interactions

Gareth has direct interactions with many characters across the series’ arcs.

He crosses paths with Bell Cranel, Welf Crozzo, Tiona Hiryute, Tione Hiryute, Mikoto Yamato, Raul Nord, and others during expeditions and the Knossos incidents, often appearing as the seasoned veteran whose presence can decide a battle.

Early Appearances and Bell Cranel

During the expedition to the 59th floor, Gareth leads the second group and therefore is the only main member of the Loki Familia’s core not present when Bell Cranel duels the One-Horned Minotaur on the 9th floor.

After hearing about the duel from Finn and others, he regrets missing such a spectacle.

Following the expedition, while the party is resting on the 18th floor, Gareth finally meets Bell.

He sees the newly promoted Level 2 who has ventured deeply into the middle levels and calls him an “interesting brat,” offering him rough but genuine encouragement.

58th Floor and Valgank Dragon

On the 58th floor Gareth shows off his overwhelming physical power against the massive “cannon dragon” Valgank Dragon, a monster comparable to a floor boss in size and potential.

He grabs the dragon’s tail and swings the entire creature around like a gigantic flail, smashing waves of surrounding monsters as if he were in a mythic saga.

Knossos and the “Heavenly Bull” Demi-Spirit

In the artificial labyrinth Knossos, Gareth plays a major role against the demi-spirit known as the “Heavenly Bull.”

He leads Tione Hiryute and Tiona Hiryute in the fight and ultimately delivers the finishing blow to the demi-spirit.

In the manga adaptation, this battle also includes support from Raul Nord, Crus, and Nalvi, who take on rear-guard roles.

The author notes in the afterword of Volume 15 that this fight alone would have justified Gareth ranking up, but story pacing concerns led to the rank-up being postponed.

Xenolos (Xenos) Arc and the Ice Magic Swords

During the Xenolos (Xenos) arc, Gareth receives orders from Finn and blocks the path of the Xenos as they attempt to head toward Knossos.

Welf Crozzo, siding with the Xenos, attacks Gareth using his ice magic sword “Hien,” but Gareth shrugs off the assault and continues fighting as if he barely noticed it.

A smoke bomb magic item from Fels disrupts the battlefield, and Tsubaki Collbrande arrives, having been requested by Hephaistos to aid Welf and his group.

Tsubaki bombards Gareth with rapid-fire magic swords, halting his movements, and Welf finishes by striking him with his prized ice magic sword “Hiyou,” freezing half of Gareth’s body.

Gareth himself compares the power of that attack to Riveria’s magic, saying it is at least on par with her class of destructive force.

Despite the massive impact, Gareth displays almost no sign of real damage and immediately moves to resume his assault.

However, Finn’s plan—to use the Xenos as bait to lure out the evil factions—is so extreme that Gareth essentially becomes the lightning rod for every side on the field.

He is subjected to repeated ice magic sword barrages, ambushed by eastern ninja-style attackers, assaulted by evil faction members taking advantage of the chaos, and even targeted by odd-colored monsters who treat him like a dangerous nuisance, all while Tsubaki joyfully keeps firing ice magic swords at him.

Even with all these forces dogpiling him, they still cannot fully stop him by sheer combat power.

In the end he fails to catch the Xenos not because he is defeated, but because he is buried under the combined interference of nearly everyone present.

In the *Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III* anime adaptation, the events are compressed and altered.

Gareth directly battles Welf and also strikes down Mikoto Yamato, rendering her combat incapable, and he is eventually frozen solid by “Hiyou,” with the anime depicting him immobilized and effectively defeated, though his body is already straining to break out of the ice.

First and Second Knossos Invasions

During the first Knossos invasion, Gareth participates as a guard for Loki and Dionysus.

Loki, still suspicious of Dionysus, gives him private instructions for any emergency, but soon afterwards the green-flesh corruption begins, forcing Gareth and the others to focus on survival and escape.

In the second Knossos campaign, Gareth and Tsubaki jointly lead a unit into battle against the “Spirit Altar,” a powerful enemy associated with the dungeon’s deeper mysteries.

They are later joined by the Gulliver Brothers and Mikoto Yamato, and together they succeed in destroying the Spirit Altar.

Freya’s Charm and Confronting the Gulliver Brothers

When Freya casts her citywide charm over Orario, Gareth falls under its influence like many others.

Once Hestia releases him from the charm, he becomes furious that he was manipulated and moves to block the Gulliver Brothers as they try to return to the Freya Familia home base.

Enyo Turmoil and the Expedition Against the Corrupted Spirit

As the “Academy District” returns to port after its operations, Gareth helps plan a large-scale expedition by a coalition of familias to defeat the corrupted spirit responsible for the Enyo turmoil.

While Finn and Riveria negotiate with the Freya Familia, Gareth meets Ryuu Lion’s ally Leon, who asks that Bell Cranel be kept from joining this dangerous expedition.

Gareth listens to Leon’s plea and agrees to consider his request, putting Bell’s safety above the spectacle of a promising young adventurer in a historic battle.

He also learns from Leon about “Dragon’s Snore” being observed in the “Dragon’s Vale,” information that underscores the gravity of the upcoming operation.

60th Floor “Demon World,” Ais’s Frenzy, and the Thousand Azure Ice Garden

On the 60th floor, transformed into a “demon world,” the corrupted spirit sends out the seventh and final Revis, whose curse drives Ais Wallenstein into a frenzy.

When the corrupted spirit attempts to devour Ais, Gareth, Finn, and Riveria move to intervene.

However, Ais’s scream triggers the “Thousand Azure Ice Garden,” a phenomenon that seals her in a cage of ice.

They fail to reach her in time and can only watch as the corrupted spirit consumes Ais, then uses her power to devastate the expedition forces.

Finn ultimately casts his spear-throwing magic “Tir na Nog,” collapsing the 60th floor’s demonic environment.

Gareth and his group are plunged into the abyss, leaving their fates unknown for a time.

Later, it is revealed that Gareth, Finn, and Riveria survive in the space between the 60th and 61st floors, within the Thousand Azure Ice Garden.

From there, they continue their struggle against the corrupted spirit’s influence and the transformed dungeon.

Gareth specializes in ultra front-line combat, combining offense and defense in one body.

He serves both as a damage dealer and as a living wall, and during retreats he usually takes the rearguard, protecting the others until everyone escapes.

He uses large shields and massive weapons such as huge battle axes.

His “Strength” and “Endurance” abilities are both at S rank and almost at their maximum possible values, then further amplified by his race’s natural toughness and his skills.

With these combined factors, Gareth’s fists become crushing hammers capable of shattering any foe, while his body acts as an impregnable shield.

He is particularly noted for his resistance to magic and abnormal conditions, allowing him to keep walking through attacks that would break most other adventurers.

Level 6 (Final Status Before Rank-Up)

Level: 6

Abilities

Strength: S 997

Endurance: S 996

Dexterity: D 564

Agility: E 489

Magic: H 117

Development Abilities

Fist Strike: Enhances the power of punches and blunt-force techniques.

Magic Defense: Increases resistance to magical attacks.

Abnormal Resistance: Boosts resistance to status ailments and abnormal conditions.

Crushing: Details unknown, but likely boosts the ability to break or shatter enemies and objects; Tiona Hiryute also possesses this.

Firm Guard: Details unknown, but believed to enhance defensive capability, especially endurance, when guarding.

Level 7

At Level 7, Gareth’s detailed parameters have not been explicitly disclosed.

It is clear, however, that his strength and endurance, already near the upper limit at Level 6, are pushed even further beyond typical first-class standards.

Power Refined Fist (Dvergr Enhance)

This skill provides a large bonus to his Strength ability.

It further magnifies his already tremendous physical power, making even simple blows catastrophic.

Earth-Hard Helm (Ardi-Galea)

This skill gives a high bonus to his Endurance ability.

It also greatly enhances his resistance to offensive magic, allowing him to withstand spells that would obliterate lesser adventurers.

Earth Raid

Chant: “Roar, earth realm (Ronza). Groan, earth veins of brute strength.”

Type: Earth-breaking magic.

This spell channels the power of the land into destructive force, scaled by Gareth’s Strength ability.

The main drawback is that it can only be activated while Gareth is standing on solid ground, limiting its use in certain environments.

Grand Axe

The Grand Axe is Gareth’s primary weapon, a massive battle-axe crafted by Tsubaki Collbrande.

Its price is listed as 45 million valis, though Tsubaki provides it to Gareth at a heavily discounted “first-grade” rate.

The axe is extremely heavy—far beyond what ordinary adventurers can handle.

Whenever Gareth’s monstrous strength causes the weapon to break, Tsubaki laments the loss, then forges an even stronger Grand Axe and entrusts it to him again.

Axe Lauren (Axe Roland)

A second-grade special weapon, this is a large axe with the “unbreakable” (Durandal) property.

It costs about 110 million valis and is part of Tsubaki’s Lauren series, forged specifically as a countermeasure against giant insect-type monsters.

Because it is designed not to break, Axe Lauren sacrifices some raw attack power compared to the Grand Axe.

Even so, it remains a super-heavy weapon that only someone like Gareth can handle—and he personally finds it “quite light” compared to his usual tools.

In the mobile game *Memoria Freese*, the “Argonaut” event features a dwarven warrior named Garmus who closely resembles Gareth.

Garmus enters the hero selection ritual to avenge his destroyed homeland and fallen clan, where he meets Argonaut and his companions.

Initially, he lacks obvious “heroic talent” and calls Argonaut a clown, baffled by the latter’s strange ideals and behavior.

As the story progresses, Garmus gradually recognizes Argonaut’s resolve, discovers the corruption hidden within the royal capital, and decides to fight alongside him.

Like Gareth, Garmus seeks not only the recovery of his home but also “hot-blooded battles,” making it highly likely he is Gareth’s past life or ancestor.

His personality and speech feel more youthful than Gareth’s, which fits his canonical age of just 18 years.

Despite that age, he sports a beard as impressive as Gareth’s and a very mature face, leading most people to doubt his age when they hear it.

It is joked that this might be due to a curse or something similar.

In later generations, Garmus is remembered as the great dwarven hero Garmuza.

This legend further reinforces the idea of a reincarnation or ancestral link to Gareth.

In the manga *Wistoria: Wand and Sword*, a battle known as the “Battle of Garza Ronzo” is referenced, where a force of dwarf warriors is led by a fierce general named Gareth.

This appears to be a star system-style reuse of the Gareth archetype, nodding to his image as a dwarven warlord.

In the now-defunct browser game *Orario Rhapsodia*, there existed a joke card concept for a “swimsuit Gareth.”

While the image can still be found online, even the original commentary humorously suggests that viewers might be happier not seeing it.
