Charlotte is a tall, dignified beauty who usually wears light armor in a knight-like style, emphasizing her status as a commanding captain.

She typically keeps her long hair braided back into a neat bun, enhancing her severe, disciplined image.

Out of uniform in casual clothes, her appearance changes so much that even people who know her, like Asta, may not recognize her at first glance.

She is visually striking both in armor and in civilian clothes, but the contrast between “frigid captain” and “soft-looking civilian woman” is huge.

Publicly, Charlotte projects a cool, sharp-tongued, man-disdaining persona, which shapes the famously man-averse atmosphere of the Blue Rose Knights.

In reality, she is a classic tsundere: harsh and dismissive on the surface, but internally shy, emotional, and hopelessly in love with Yami.

She is extremely weak to alcohol, getting completely drunk from a single sip, which contrasts hilariously with heavy drinkers in the series.

Despite her stern attitude, she is conscientious, serious, and deeply dedicated both to her squad and to her own self-improvement.

Charlotte was born into the upper-class noble family House Roselei.

As a child, a person who bore a grudge against House Roselei placed a powerful curse on her, set to activate when she turned 18.

This curse created time-stopping briars that would eventually trap her in a prison of thorns, warping her own magic.

Her natural briar magic should have produced red roses, but under the curse, the briars sprouted blue roses instead, symbolizing a twisted, altered soul.

Determined to break the curse, Charlotte spent years training and researching, ignoring noble suitors and dedicating herself to magic.

However, her efforts failed, and on her 18th birthday the curse fully activated, causing briars to imprison her.

At that moment, Yami—who happened to be nearby and got his soup pasta spilled all over him by the incident—intervened and saved her.

He told her not to bear everything alone and to rely on a Magic Knight squad strong enough to help, urging her to seek comrades instead of shouldering everything herself.

The curse’s condition for being broken was for Charlotte to “have her heart stolen by a man.”

Yami’s actions and words stirred her heart, fulfilled that requirement, and broke the curse, freeing her from the time-stopping prison.

Although the blue thorns remained as a lingering effect of the curse, the lethal time-stop aspect was lifted.

Later, Dorothy Unsworth explains that all curses originate from the high-ranking devil Megicula, meaning Charlotte’s curse was indirectly tied to Megicula.

Charlotte is the captain of the Blue Rose Knights, one of the Magic Knight squads of the Clover Kingdom.

The Blue Rose are predominantly, and culturally, a women-focused squad with a strong “no men needed” attitude that largely reflects Charlotte’s public persona.

She commands deep respect from her subordinates, who admire both her strength and her cool, knightly demeanor.

However, as later revealed, many of her squad members secretly date or talk about romance despite the squad’s anti-men rhetoric.

When Charlotte confesses to her squad that she is in love with Yami, she expects outrage and is ready to resign as captain.

Instead, the squad enthusiastically supports her, and it comes out that many of them have been quietly involved in their own love lives all along, even having a “love master” among them.

Sol Marron, Charlotte’s most devoted subordinate, fiercely idolizes her and initially despises men, especially Yami.

Over time, even Sol is pulled along by the squad’s acceptance and Charlotte’s changing attitude, though she still clings to the “protect Captain Charlotte from men” mindset.

Yami not only saved Charlotte from her curse but also became the man who unintentionally “stole her heart.”

Since that day, she has been in love with him for nine years, all while he remains almost completely oblivious.

On the surface, Charlotte insults men and acts cold around Yami, often calling him rude, uncouth, or shameless.

Internally, she is constantly flustered, embarrassed by any show of kindness from him, and hyper-aware of his presence.

Examples of her tsundere behavior include:

Rushing in to save Yami against powerful enemies, loudly trash-talking him and “all men,” while inwardly worrying about his safety.

Nearly panicking when she ends up sitting next to him at captains’ meetings, working desperately to appear calm while her mind spins out of control.

Remembering how her body was controlled by an elf and pressed close to Yami, then screaming in embarrassment once she’s herself again.

After the Elf Reincarnation arc, while recovering in the hospital, she sees Yami coming to visit and clearly tries to brace herself.

When Yami begins to say something important, she completely loses it, runs at incredible speed all over the kingdom, and in the chaos even accidentally picks up someone’s baby before sheepishly returning it.

Eventually, she gathers her courage and loudly declares in front of her squad that she is in love with Yami.

From that point on, she starts, very awkwardly, trying to close the distance—inviting him to meals and conversations, often under the pretense of business.

Later, during the battle against Lucifero, Yami is left on the brink of death.

Charlotte tearfully begs him to live, openly confesses, shouting that she loves him and pleading with him not to die.

Thanks to the efforts of Vanessa Enoteca, Charmy Pappitson, and Mimosa Vermillion, Yami survives.

When he wakes up, he casually asks what she said earlier, not remembering her heartfelt confession, which causes Charlotte to overheat with embarrassment and faint on the spot.

Despite this comedic setback, everyone around them (and Charlotte herself) believes Yami must have heard at least some of it.

Her unrequited love remains one of the most charming ongoing threads in Black Clover.

During the Elf Reincarnation incident, Charlotte’s body is taken over by the elf Sharla.

Because Sharla uses Charlotte’s original, uncursed magic, the briars bloom in their proper crimson red color instead of cursed blue.

Even while Sharla was in control, Charlotte remained dimly aware and later remembers Sharla’s interactions with Yami.

When the incident is resolved and Charlotte wakes up, she spots Yami and is overcome with a surge of embarrassment and unresolved feelings.

This triggers her ridiculous, high-speed sprint through the kingdom and eventually leads to her confession to her squad members.

In the anime-original half-year training arc, Charlotte volunteers to train in the Heart Kingdom.

She chooses this training because she wants to reproduce the red briars Sharla used and surpass her own cursed limitations.

Under the instruction of the Spirit Guardian Sarado (Salad), she studies mana method, the Heart Kingdom’s magic language-based technique.

She throws herself into learning magic words and patterns more diligently than anyone, determined to rewrite her own curse and achieve a new level of power.

During this period, she repeatedly tries to confess or at least honestly express her feelings to Yami.

Every attempt is derailed by her own embarrassment, timing, or pure awkwardness, turning it into a long-running comedic bit.

She also participates in the special captains-only crystal destruction team battle, teaming up with William Vangeance, Fuegoleon Vermillion, and Dorothy Unsworth.

This shows her tactical awareness and coordination with other top-tier captains.

When Dante Zogratis and Zenon Zogratis of the Spade Kingdom attack the Clover Kingdom and abduct William and Yami, a captains’ meeting is called.

Learning Yami has been taken nearly breaks Charlotte’s composure, and she is deeply shaken but resolves to personally save him.

Jack the Ripper wants to charge into the Spade Kingdom alone, and Nozel Silva tries to restrain him.

Charlotte steps in as well, her harsh words hiding a desperate desire to rescue Yami before it is too late.

Nacht Faust appears, reveals information about the Tree of Qliphoth and his status as a devil host, and proposes a coordinated rescue.

Charlotte is selected as one of the elite fighters to storm the Spade Kingdom and prevent the completion of the Tree of Qliphoth.

Using Nacht’s shadow magic, she infiltrates the Spade Kingdom’s castle alongside Rill Boismortier and Dorothy Unsworth.

When they encounter the Dark Disciples, Dorothy stays behind to hold them off, allowing Charlotte and Rill to proceed deeper into the castle.

Charlotte and Rill eventually confront Vanica Zogratis, host of the devil Megicula, along with two of the Diamond Kingdom’s Eight Shining Generals who have defected to Spade.

Here, Charlotte showcases the results of her Heart Kingdom training and her newly mastered mana method.

She uses magic words to rewrite the curse that made her briars blue, turning the curse into a power-up mechanism instead.

Her magic now absorbs and responds to curses: the stronger the curse, the stronger Charlotte’s blue roses become, blooming as they devour maledictions.

With her curse harnessed instead of hindering her, she can once again use her original red briars while also wielding the curse-born blue ones.

Rill is stunned and realizes Charlotte became a captain without ever having access to her true full power.

Charlotte then overwhelms Vanica by combining her two-color briar magic, capturing Vanica even when Vanica is using up to 70% of her devil’s power.

She also crushes the cursed Eight Shining Generals alongside her, seemingly ending the battle in her favor.

However, the situation is overturned when the Tree of Qliphoth’s first gate opens due to Morris’s research and devil abilities.

This allows Vanica to draw on 100% of Megicula’s power, letting her break free from Charlotte’s magic.

On top of that, Lolopechka, queen of the Heart Kingdom, arrives as a brainwashed and cursed puppet controlled by Vanica.

Charlotte and Rill are pushed to their limits trying to handle Vanica, Lolopechka, and the overwhelming demonic power.

Noelle Silva and Gadjah then join the battle, determined to defeat Vanica and save Lolopechka.

Even with Charlotte and Rill assisting, Megicula partially manifests when Vanica is defeated, turning the fight into a full-scale battle against a high-ranking devil.

Charlotte and Rill attempt to face Megicula but are overpowered by her curses and immense magic.

They are saved by interventions from Asta, Noelle, and later Nozel Silva, who ultimately help bring down Megicula for good.

Charlotte is severely injured and pushed to the verge of death during this fight.

Rill’s magic, which was enhancing everyone, runs out, and her body nearly gives out completely.

Mimosa Vermillion, empowered by her own ultimate magic, manages to heal Charlotte, bringing her and Gadjah back from death’s door.

Charlotte then witnesses Gadjah confessing his love to Lolopechka, seeing another form of brave, straightforward affection up close.

After the defeat of the Dark Triad and the collapse of the Tree of Qliphoth, everyone briefly believes the crisis is over.

However, Lucifero, the powerful devil of gravity, attempts to manifest in the human world in an incomplete form.

Charlotte, along with the other Magic Knight captains except for Yami and William (who are still confined in the Tree of Qliphoth structure), rushes in to support Asta.

Despite their combined strength, Lucifero’s overwhelming power and gravity magic completely dominate them, and they are casually beaten down.

The tide finally turns when Asta, Yuno Grinberryall, Nacht Faust, and a revived Yami join forces.

Asta ultimately lands the decisive blow, defeating Lucifero’s manifestation.

In the aftermath, Yami is left gravely injured, his life slowly slipping away.

Charlotte, barely able to stand, forces herself to his side and unleashes all her pent-up feelings.

She yells at Yami to wake up, asking where his usual brazen confidence has gone, and then breaks down in tears.

Crying openly, she confesses that she loves him and begs him not to die, her dignified façade completely shattered.

Soon after, Vanessa and the rest of the Black Bulls arrive.

Charmy restores Mimosa’s mana, allowing Mimosa to use her ultimate healing magic to save Yami and Nacht.

When Yami recovers and casually tells Charlotte he’s back and fine, he then asks, “By the way, did you say something earlier?”

Charlotte, realizing her heartfelt confession might not have registered with him at all, overheats with embarrassment and collapses in a comic faint.

Charlotte specializes in briar (thorn) creation magic, usually channeled from a sword hilt adorned with rose motifs.

Her magic focuses on mid-range fighting, overwhelming foes with massive quantities of thorny vines.

Originally, her briars were red, the natural color of her magic, symbolizing her true self.

Because of the curse linked to Megicula, her briars turned blue and became entangled with time-stopping curse power and soul distortion.

After her training and mana method research, she gains the ability to wield both cursed blue and original red briars together.

Charlotte appears as a collaboration character in the mobile game Tales of the Rays.

She joins the game’s roster in the 2021 March collaboration event (part 1) and officially becomes playable in the April part 2, alongside Yami Sukehiro.

Her Mirrage Arte (ultimate move) in that game is based on her spell “Corpse-Hunting Briar Tree.”
