Waji

Waji is almost always shown grinning from ear to ear.

He is notably quick to laugh, and even trivial events can send him into a fit of hearty laughter.

This cheerful surface gives him an immediately memorable presence.

His relaxed, ever-amused demeanor makes him stand out among the series’ eccentric cast.

Waji is treated as male here, but within the work his gender presentation is portrayed ambiguously.

In the four-panel afterword of volume 10 of Haré+Guu, creator Hiroko Yamada commented in a very loose way that she did not particularly care whether the character was male or female.

She also remarked that, since the anime voice actor was male, Waji might be a boy.

Even so, the series itself keeps the matter somewhat unclear in its depiction.

During a medical examination, Waji was examined together with the other male characters.

However, when Dama struck Tom in the groin during their confrontation, the male characters, including the baby Ame, reacted visibly, while Waji remained calmly on the sidelines like the female characters.

Because of scenes like these, Waji’s gender is never depicted in a completely definitive way within the story.

That ambiguity became one of the character’s unusual traits.

Waji’s most defining trait is his permanently sunny expression.

He laughs often, laughs easily, and seems delighted by things that others might barely notice.

This constant cheerfulness gives him a playful and slightly mysterious air.

He comes across as lighthearted, but the series occasionally hints at darker material beneath the surface.

Following a short gag that appeared in a character popularity ranking feature, an implied background setting began to appear from time to time suggesting that Waji was abused by his father.

This element is presented as an occasional behind-the-scenes or joke-related detail rather than a central storyline.

Like Toposte, Waji is said in the final chapter of Haré+Guu to be working in the town.

This provides a brief glimpse of his later life after the main events of the series.
