The Start of Rin’s Solo Camping

Hajime is the main reason Rin Shima started camping alone, as he gave her all his old camping gear when she was in middle school.

Helping Rin During Her Adventures

Hajime often helps Rin in her camping life.

In one story, when heavy snow kept Rin from getting home from Shizuoka, Hajime drove over to pick her up.

Before Rin’s Izu camping trip, he brought a windscreen for her bike, noticed her charging cable was missing a relay, and shopped for parts.

He even worked together with Wataru Shima to help Rin set up her bike, then went touring with her on the morning of her departure.

In the Anime

Hajime’s first animated appearance is actually in Season 1, Episode 6, earlier than in the original story.

He meets Chiaki Ōgaki by chance at a campsite and cooks steak for her, inspiring her to buy her own skillet.

His first call with Saki Shima appears as well, with his face shown in the anime before the original manga.

In Laid-Back Camp The Movie

Hajime appears as an older man and gives his cherished Triumph Thruxton to the now grown-up Rin.

He is also seen at the same campsite as Chiaki, but they do not interact.

In the Live-Action Drama

Hajime briefly appears when he goes to Nadeshiko Kagamihara’s grandmother's house to pick up Rin.

Only his back is shown, and his voice is provided by Akio Otsuka, like in the anime.

Hajime’s full name, Hajime Shinshiro, was revealed in volume 9 of the original manga and the official camp gear book.

His last name, Shinshiro, comes from Shinshiro City in Aichi Prefecture, matching the regional theme of character names in Laid-Back Camp.

He is sometimes simply called "the camping old man" or "Rin’s grandfather."

In cool moments, Hajime’s personality is described as close to Akio Otsuka, who also voices him.

He even makes a small cameo in Afro's other work, Mono, where he helps someone fix a flat tire on his travels.
