Rin Shima

One of the protagonists of this work. Her birthday is October 1st. She has a petite build, often being mistaken for an elementary school student by people like Nadeshiko upon first meeting. Up until Chapter 87 of the original work, she wore her hair tied up in a large bun on top of her head but changed to a short haircut down to her nape starting in Chapter 88. Influenced by her grandfather, she has a fondness for camping. Despite her extensive camping experience, she prefers to enjoy quiet solo time at campsites, usually camping off-season when it's less crowded and has never camped with anyone else.

At the beginning of the story, she helps a stranded Nadeshiko, and gradually starts camping occasionally with her. Meeting Nadeshiko motivates her to try more extensive outdoor cooking beyond just instant noodles. She starts embarking on solo trips across prefectural borders on her recently-gotten scooter license with her “Yamaha Vino.” She also has some mechanical skills, adding new parts to her scooter, although she sometimes fails due to a lack of preliminary research.

She is a book-loving library committee member who reads at school, at camp, and even works part-time at a bookstore. Although she likes dogs, she cannot keep one at home due to her parents' dog allergy. She maintains a cool demeanor but is not bad at communication and internally often retorts to or complains about things around her. She has a somewhat spontaneous and laid-back personality, thus not completely fitting the “intellectual lone wolf” character. Most of the camping gear she uses is hand-me-downs from her grandfather, Hajime, and her favorite tent is the Montbell Moonlight Tent 3.

Chiaki calls her “Shimarin.” Although she has been invited to join the Outdoor Activities Club several times by Nadeshiko and Chiaki, she finds their activities a bit too lively for her liking, keeping some distance while still maintaining contact via LINE and gradually becoming closer friends.

At a Christmas camp, she participates in a large group camp for the first time. Subsequently, while she doesn’t join the Outdoor Activities Club, she enjoys various forms of camping such as solo camping, duo camping with Nadeshiko, and group camping with Club members.

Later, she shares the joy of solo camping with Nadeshiko who starts showing interest in it. While she was planning a solo camp near Amahata, she cancels it out of concern for Nadeshiko and goes to check on her.

In Chapter 66 of the original work, she finds a thick log among the firewood Chiaki, Toba, and the vice-principal received near the club building. Finding it difficult to split with a hatchet or small axe, she suggests buying a hydraulic log splitter.

In the movie, she gets a job at a small publishing house in Nagoya called “Shachihoko Publishing,” moving from sales to the editorial department and engaging in the production of a town information magazine. Even though her ideas haven’t been passed yet, she continues to work diligently. She lives alone in Ichinomiya City and enjoys touring and day-camping on holidays with a bike inherited from her grandfather. She still owns the scooter she used previously, which plays an active role towards the end.
