Character Setting

Edit

Satoshi Mashiba is a classmate of Shouya Ishida who first appears in the high school arc of A Silent Voice. He looks friendly and is always smiling, but he has a strange and twisted side because of his past as a victim of bullying. One of his most defining traits is that he cannot stand bullying in any form. This strong emotion shapes how he acts around others, making him unexpectedly cold when he meets people he dislikes or thinks are bullies. A major scene involves Mashiba standing up against people who insult Shouya and Shouko Nishimiya, showing his willingness to protect those he cares about, even in difficult situations.

Satoshi Mashiba is described as a gentle-looking boy who always has a smile on his face.

He is known for his unusual eyebrows, which were the reason he was bullied in the past.

Blood type: O.

Mashiba is mostly calm, easy-going, and has a friendly smile.

But deep down, he has a twisted sense—he cannot stand to watch bullying or people being mean.

When he witnesses bullying, he becomes a different person and can act cold and even cruel toward the bully.

He sometimes uses his smile to say harsh things, especially to Tomohiro Nagatsuka and Miki Kawai.

Even if someone is friendly to him, like Kawai, he can still act distant if he sees something in their personality he does not like.

Mashiba was bullied as a child by his classmates because of his eyebrows.

This left a scar on his heart.

He decided never to ignore bullying and always speaks up when he sees it.

At some point, he thought about becoming a teacher so he could watch how the children of his own bullies would grow up.

Later, he changed his mind and decided teaching was not what he really wanted, so he started looking for another path.

With Friends and Classmates

Satoshi Mashiba is classmates with Shouya Ishida, Tomohiro Nagatsuka, and Miki Kawai.

He gets close to them after a newspaper article about Shouya's past catches his interest.

He and Kawai start hanging out with the group, and he shows his gentle side while also being very alert to signs of bullying.

With Shouya, Mashiba is friendly, but after learning about Shouya's past as a bully, he hits him during an argument among friends.

Mashiba later regrets this and apologizes to Shouya after seeing Shouya risk himself for Shouko Nishimiya.

Over time, they become real friends.

With Miki Kawai

Kawai likes Mashiba, but at first, he treats her coldly and seems to look down on her.

He believes she is a bully who tries to cover it up.

Mashiba originally wanted to reveal her true character, but after seeing her do something genuinely kind for Shouko Nishimiya, he realizes Kawai is not acting and accepts her as she is.

They later share a friendly, close relationship, and at their coming-of-age ceremony, Mashiba gives her a ring.

Even though they are not a typical couple, they both enjoy being together and have a special bond.

High School Years

Mashiba is introduced as a classmate of Shouya Ishida, Tomohiro Nagatsuka, and Miki Kawai.

After reading an article about Shouya’s past, he gets interested and starts hanging out with the group.

He seems kind, but because of the trauma from being bullied for his eyebrows, he has a strong dislike for bullies.

He gets close to Shouya partly because he thinks, “At least I’m not as bad as him.”

After learning about Shouya’s past as someone who hurt others, Mashiba punches him during a group fight.

Mashiba feels a sense of relief after giving “justice” to the bully.

But when Shouya puts himself at risk to help Shouko Nishimiya and ends up unconscious, Mashiba regrets his actions and helps with the group’s movie, apologizing and finally making up with Shouya.

This leads to an honest friendship between them.

Standing Up Against Bullying

Mashiba cannot ignore bullying, and when a teacher called Takeuchi insults Shouya and Shouko Nishimiya during a school visit, Mashiba pours water over the teacher as a way to stand up for his friends.

Changing How He Judges Others

At first, Mashiba wants to punish people he thinks are bullies.

But after learning more about Shouya and Kawai, he realizes he was wrong about them and tries to be more understanding.

He decides not to be controlled by his own need for payback.

After High School

Mashiba goes to Kunise University after finishing high school.

He continues to join in on making movies with his friend Tomohiro Nagatsuka.

During the coming-of-age ceremony, he gives a ring to Miki Kawai.

They form a unique relationship where they are not officially a couple but enjoy each other’s company.

  • Mashiba's blood type is O.
  • He has a special relationship with Miki Kawai, and the creator thinks they are a good match.
  • Even though he thought about becoming a teacher, Mashiba chooses to search for his own path instead.
