A woman characterized by her unique undercut hairstyle (which the author calls "a woman's courage"). She is spirited and carefree, and although she can be somewhat childish, she is brave enough to confront villains for the sake of her daughters and the mikan. She was always seen with a cigarette in her mouth. She had a long-standing relationship with Genzo, who said, "When she was little, she was known as a notorious brat in the village."

19 years ago, she was on the brink of death on the battlefield and had almost lost the will to live when she encountered the war orphans Nami and Nojiko. Inspired by Nami's innocent smile, she regained her will to live and took the two back to her hometown of Cocoyashi Village. Despite opposition, she adopted them and retired from the military to manage a mikan orchard. Although the orchard did not prosper due to the availability of mikans everywhere due to the favorable climate, she raised the two with her modest assets. She felt a sense of guilt for not being blood-related to them, but she tried to live up to being a mother until the end. Ten years ago, during the attack by the Arlong crew, Arlong demanded a tribute payment, but she didn't have enough to cover all her family members. She was advised to pay her own share and let Nami and Nojiko escape, but she refused and offered her life instead, paying with her life to save her daughters.

In the New World arc, her grave has been modestly upgraded from a wooden to a sturdy stone structure.

Her name is derived from the French word "belle-mère," meaning stepmother.
