Character Setting

Edit

Aya Kōda is a 10-year-old girl who speaks in Kansai dialect and is known for her strong sense of justice. She learns karate and dreams of being a true hero. Aya is a regular kid with no special powers but bravely faces big dangers, including a close call with a bomb and encounters with vampires. Even when things get very scary, she always tries to help others, showing remarkable courage. Her notable adventures take place during the major Tenjin Gosui arc in Bungo Stray Dogs.

Aya is a 10-year-old girl. She speaks in Kansai dialect, which comes from the Osaka area. Her look is cheerful and energetic. She often appears with a bold and determined expression.

Aya is very friendly and outgoing. She addresses older characters, like Doppo Kunikida, by their names without honorifics and speaks casually to everyone. Despite her young age, her sense of justice is very strong. Even when she feels very scared and her hands tremble, she still takes action to help people. She admires heroes and wants to be someone who helps others, just like her late mother.

Aya's mother passed away, and her father wants her to become a "perfect woman," just like her mother. Because of this, Aya often disagrees and fights with her father, but she still looks up to him as a symbol of justice. Aya does not have any special powers, making her a normal human in a world where many people have unique abilities.

Aya is skilled in karate. She practices a lot and is brave in fights, even when she faces people with supernatural powers. However, Aya has no supernatural abilities herself.

  • Father: Her father wants her to be perfect, causing conflict, but she secretly wants to live up to his idea of justice.
  • Bram Stoker: Aya calls him “Bram-chan” and becomes his friend and helper.
  • Doppo Kunikida: Aya talks to him casually and bravely, even in dangerous situations.

  • "I am a hero of justice!"
  • "Let's go, Bram-chan!"
  • "I haven’t done anything wrong yet, have I?"
  • "Is this person really a police officer?"
  • "No way, if Bram-chan is taken, it’s all over!"
  • "If your goal was Bram-chan, you have no reason to care about me anymore. Why didn’t you kill me?"
  • "There is. There’s something heavy right here."

Involved in a Bomb Incident

Aya gets caught in a bomb incident by criminal Shōsaku Katsura, who is mad at Doppo Kunikida. Aya almost gets killed by the bomb but is saved by Kunikida and Akiko Yosano.

Tenjin Gosui Arc

Aya reappears during the Tenjin Gosui arc at the airport. She is noticed by Saigiku Jōno, who realizes she knows the Agency. Jōno gives her a secret note pretending to threaten her, which actually tells her to follow him.

Aya then witnesses the real villain behind the Tenjin Gosui incident and the murder of Jōno. She takes photos of the scene, but the flash alerts Ōchi Fukuchi, the villain. Thinking quickly, she hides inside Bram Stoker’s coffin and manages to escape when Fukuchi hesitates.

Escaping With Bram Stoker

Aya learns the truth about the case from Bram, and together they try to escape inside the airport. When they are surrounded by guards turned into vampires, Kenji Miyazawa comes to their rescue. They try to get away in a laundry truck, but Ryūnosuke Akutagawa finds them. They are left in the control tower, and even after hearing that the “Great Order” is about to be used, Aya doesn’t give up.

Pulling the Holy Sword

She ties a heavy desk to Bram’s holy sword and tries to use the weight to pull the sword out. When the desk isn’t heavy enough, Aya bravely jumps with it. With her determination, she succeeds in pulling the sword out of Bram’s body, allowing him to regain his powers and save her from falling. She is then brought to Yukichi Fukuzawa and Fukuchi, where she sees the villain defeated, but witnesses Bram transform into Fyodor Dostoevsky before her eyes.

Aya's Dedication

Aya decides to help Bram after learning about his sad past. She goes to great lengths to save him, risking her life. Her actions earn Bram’s deep gratitude, and he vows to serve as her knight.

The origin of her name, Aya Kōda, is unclear, but there exists a real-life writer with the same name. There is no known connection to Doppo Kunikida, despite both sharing a surname.

  • Aya uses Kansai (Osaka) dialect, making her speech style unique in the series.
  • She has no supernatural abilities but still plays a key role in important events.
  • She nicknames Bram “Bram-chan.”
  • Aya’s courage and cleverness have saved her and others more than once, even against impossible odds.
