Character Introduction

Known among magicians as "Wandering Jew," this person has lived long enough to call Elias "shorty." He is afflicted with an "immortality curse" by a certain magician, meaning he can survive being shot in the head or having his arm severed, regenerating quickly, though he still feels "pain."
He speaks innocently but lacks any moral sense, leading to actions like encouraging Matthew to kill cats, murdering bystanders at grave robberies without guilt, and coercing Mikhail and Alice to collect corruption from Ulthar and Ruth, all to achieve his own goals without hesitation. He genuinely believes "this is the way of living beings" and is regarded by Elias as neither human nor beast but a monstrosity in human form.
His body continuously deteriorates due to the curse, and his aforementioned actions are attempts to find ways to sustain his decaying body. He currently maintains his body using various "patchworks," but seeks a better, longer-lasting body as the decay accelerates. He kidnaps two young dragons from Lindel's sanctuary to use one's body for himself and sells the other at auction to fund his research facility.
Using information from Hazel Eyes, he possesses part of himself in Stella to monitor Chise, becoming intrigued by the nature of the dragon's curse affecting her. After Chase rejects Elias's approach to breaking the curse, and distances herself from him, he reveals his possession of Stella and proposes a deal to Chice, threatening Stella's life to coax Chise to his research facility. He suggests that a balance could be achieved between his "curse of perpetual bodily destruction" and Chise's "curse of regenerating towards death," offering Stella's salvation, the release of the dissected dragon kept alive, and a part of himself to Chise (which could also stabilize her) in exchange for Chise's left arm.
He first performs an eye transplant between himself and Chise, followed by planning the arm transplantation. Chise is put to sleep by her own eye's ability, and he torments her with visions of her past. However, Chise retaliates with a similar spell, unveiling his past. His true identity is revealed as the meshed existence of "Cartaphilus," cursed for condemning the Savior and throwing stones at him, and "Joseph," a despised gravekeeper and young necromancer.
Joseph tried desperate treatments as a physician but failed to cure the ancient curse afflicting Cartaphilus as it worsened. As winter's scarcity threatened the village, the frustrated villagers turned against Joseph, who then decided to leave with Cartaphilus, who never recovered. Joseph eventually suggests they could survive together as one by combining his living body with the undying Cartaphilus, leading to their merger using Joseph's necromancy. Despite this, the curse didn't disappear, and their new body continued to decay.
Awaking from a dream and infuriated at having his past revealed, Joseph attempts to kill Chise. However, Elias, Ruth, Mikhail, and Alice, helped by Titania, intervene and he flees. Eventually, after a fierce confrontation with Chise, Elias, and Ruth, with Hazel Eyes' help, Chise manages to subdue him using her own body as a sacrifice. They reach a brief understanding before he is subdued by sleep magic.
He now resides in a section of the Ainsworth estate, mostly dormant and overwhelmed by a persistent drowsiness when awake, choosing to stay due to the complex feelings he developed for Chise.
