Survey Corps Fourth Squad Leader → 14th Commander of the Survey Corps. Height: 170 cm. Weight: 60 kg. Born on September 5. Along with Sasha, serves as a comic relief character in this work.

Has a gender-neutral appearance with brown hair in a ponytail, wearing goggles during missions and glasses at other times. Possesses excellent intellect and combat skills, acting as a strategist for Commander Erwin, mainly excelling in the biological investigation of Titans and strategic planning. Previously fought Titans fueled by hatred for the loss of comrades but began to question the Titan's body due to a trivial incident, choosing to fight Titans through "Titan research." Appears bright and approachable but is regarded as a "fearless eccentric" within the Survey Corps, harboring feelings close to affection towards Titans. After Eren's joining, takes charge of researching Titan transformation abilities and leading the Survey Corps in Erwin's absence, and is appointed as the next commander by Erwin himself after his death.

Developed the new weapon "Thunder Spears," effective against the Armored Titan, by acquiring technology hidden by the Military Police and deployed it to the Survey Corps. During the final operation to reclaim Wall Maria, was injured by the explosion of the Colossal Titan but contributed to repelling the Armored Titan and succeeded Erwin as the commander of the Survey Corps. Also, due to an injury to the left eye in this battle, began wearing an eye patch thereafter.

Appears as the commander of the Survey Corps in the Marley arc four years later, handling the command of the Survey Corps and interactions with foreign countries. While understanding the necessity of the "Rumbling" to protect Paradis Island, was torn by the desire to avoid mass slaughter of people outside the walls. Ultimately allowed the activation of the "Rumbling" but joined forces with Magath and the Cart Titan to stop Eren. Later, decided to make a solo charge to buy time for the airship carrying comrades to take off. After appointing Armin as the 15th commander of the Survey Corps, received encouragement from Levi to "dedicate your heart," and fought valiantly against numerous Colossal Titans, ultimately dying a heroic death as the gas canister of the ODM gear exploded and ignited after self-ignition. After death, reunited with fallen comrades of the Survey Corps, felt relieved upon being informed that the airship had taken off and that the mission was accomplished, and began to talk about the challenges faced as a commander.

In the anime version, has increased screen time, fighting under Keith's command alongside Erwin in episode 1. In episode 9, the episode corresponding to the special "Levi's Soldier" is inserted, along with additional battle scenes not depicted in the original, showcasing the ability to take down a Titan single-handedly. Additional episodes were also inserted in the OAD version "Ilse's Notebook."

In the live-action film version, unlike the original, participated in the operation to seal the hole in the wall.

Initially, the author was ambiguous about Hange's gender, stating, "It seems better not to specify the gender," and the editor also mentioned, "I asked Isayama before, and it seems either is fine." On the other hand, it was also mentioned, "In the anime and live-action, became female," and "Intended to be female, but could also be seen as male," with the anime version clearly showing a bust, though the gender is not explicitly stated. In the early serialization "Ilse's Notebook," used feminine speech, and in the fake preview of volume 5, was depicted wearing a skirt. Additionally, in volume 27, when grabbed by Eren while imprisoned, exclaimed, "Eren, you pervert!"
