Character Setting

Edit

Finral Roulacase is a nobleman of the Vaude family and a space magic user in the world of Black Clover, serving as a first-class junior Magic Knight of the Black Bull squad and functioning as its primary teleportation and support mage.

Name: Finral Roulacase

Gender: Male

Age: 21 → 22 (during the Devil Possession arc)

Birthday: February 6

Height: 173 cm

Blood Type: A

Squad: Black Bull (Magic Knights)

Rank: First-Class Junior Magic Knight

Magic Attribute: Space

Favorite Things: Girls

Family: Eldest son of the noble Vaude family; older half-brother of Langris Vaude

Fiancée: Finesse Calmreich (arranged engagement as future Vaude head)

Voice Actor (Japanese): Jun Fukuyama

Finral is a member of the Black Bull squad in the Clover Kingdom’s Magic Knights.

Among the many eccentrics in the Black Bull, he is comparatively normal, kind-hearted, and considerate.

He is, however, an outrageous womanizer whose obsession with flirting can interfere with missions.

Despite having been in the squad for a long time, his fellow members rarely treat him as a senior, which makes him complain that he joined before most of them.

The only one who consistently calls him “senior” is Asta, which Finral appreciates even as he sometimes plays it off.

Aside from his womanizing, he is actually attentive, empathetic, and very caring toward his comrades.

Although his parents neglected him in favor of his gifted half-brother Langris, other people around him often valued his gentle and sincere nature.

His engagement partner Finesse Calmreich, the future wife of the Vaude family head, especially thinks well of his kindness and honesty.

Finral dislikes violence and never took well to attack magic, especially compared to Langris.

Years of being compared to his prodigy half-brother and being treated as inferior led him to bury his inferiority complex under playboy behavior and shallow flirting.

He is rather timid and was easily discouraged in the early story, prone to giving up or whining when things got dangerous.

After his fight in the Underwater Temple against Vetto, however, he resolved not to become “the strongest” himself, but to make the Black Bull the strongest squad.

Over time he grows braver, more decisive, and more willing to stand in harm’s way for others.

He comes to see Asta—whose anti-magic complements his own support style—as his “strongest partner.”

Finral is the eldest son of the prestigious Vaude family, a noble house famous for producing many powerful offensive space magic users.

Unlike his lineage’s expectations, he is bad at fighting and never managed to learn proper attack magic.

His half-brother Langris Vaude, by contrast, excels in destructive spatial magic and quickly became the family’s favorite.

The Vaude parents showered affection and expectations on Langris and largely ignored Finral, pressuring him as the “useless” heir.

Langris later remarks that Finral “couldn’t bear the pressure and left home.”

Out of guilt and his naturally gentle disposition, Finral never talked back to his parents and rarely rebelled against Langris’s contempt.

Because of this, Langris looks down on him and openly belittles him, even after becoming Vice-Captain of the Golden Dawn under William Vangeance.

Finral usually just takes the abuse in silence, weighed down by his family situation.

However, during the capital defense battle, when Asta and Charmy Pappitson are mocked, Finral finally snaps.

He tells them that they can insult him as much as they like, but they must never belittle members of the Black Bull.

This outburst shows how deeply he values his squad as his chosen family.

The Black Bull members, in turn, respect his kindness and loyalty even if they tease him constantly.

Before joining the Magic Knights, Finral vowed to become a man worthy of Finesse Calmreich, his fiancée and the future spouse of the Vaude family head.

This promise later becomes a key motivation for him to restrain his womanizing and grow up.

After the events involving the devil Zagred, Finral and Langris manage to somewhat reconcile.

Langris jokingly calls Finral’s extreme fondness for women “a curse,” showing their relationship has softened enough for light teasing.

Finral’s primary role is long-range transport and battlefield support using his rare space magic.

Because his teleportation is so convenient, Captain Yami Sukehiro constantly works him hard, sending him everywhere as a living gateway.

Within the Black Bull, Finral’s portals often enable surprise attacks, emergency retreats, and rapid reinforcement.

In group fights he usually stays behind the front line, placing portals to reposition allies and dodge enemy attacks.

He frequently collaborates with Vanessa Enoteca’s thread magic and Asta’s melee combat.

By coordinating their abilities, he makes sure Asta’s attacks land and that the team can avoid fatal hits or reposition instantly.

Finral cuts a comic figure with his flirty antics, but when things get serious he becomes focused and dependable.

He is especially protective toward his friends and will risk his life to shield them, even against overwhelmingly stronger foes.

Underwater Temple and Resolve

During the Underwater Temple arc, Finral fights alongside the Black Bull against Vetto of the Eye of the Midnight Sun.

There, even Vetto acknowledges the speed and precision of Finral’s space magic.

This battle becomes a turning point for Finral.

He decides to stop running away, choosing to support his comrades so that the Black Bull can become the strongest squad.

Royal Knights Selection Exam

In the Royal Knights selection exam, Finral teams up with Leopold Vermillion and Hamon Caseus.

His support magic shines as he accurately teleports allies and objects, earning praise that it is strange he had been overshadowed for so long.

In one match, he faces his own brother Langris, who is on another team.

Finral uses his space magic to transfer the enemy crystal to his teammates and tries to stall Langris by exploiting spatial properties.

He also announces a new spell, “Fallen Angel’s Flapping,” and declares that he does not want to hurt his brother.

This remark enrages Langris, who unleashes a dark, ominous magic that reminds Finral of the Eye of the Midnight Sun’s aura.

Finral forces himself to believe, “No, that’s Langris, my little brother,” and tries to stop his rampage.

He throws everything he has into his magic to oppose Langris’s relentless spatial attacks.

Despite his efforts, he is overwhelmed and left in a near-fatal state.

Just as Langris is about to finish him off, Asta and others intervene, and Owen’s healing magic barely saves Finral’s life.

He remains unconscious and is hospitalized in the capital.

This coma continues into the Elf Reincarnation crisis.

Elf Reincarnation and Battle with Latry

When Patry’s reincarnation magic causes numerous elves to take over Magic Knights’ bodies, the capital falls into chaos.

Yami Sukehiro literally beats Finral awake and drags him into battle.

He soon confronts Latry, an elf reincarnated into Langris’s body.

Fighting alongside Yami and Jack the Ripper, Finral acts as the key coordinator of the fight, teleporting attacks and allies.

Though technically a subordinate, in this battle he effectively directs both squad captains through his portal placements.

Their tag-team effort corners Latry despite his violent spatial magic.

When Yami’s attacks push Latry into a berserk state, Finral boldly teleports Latry right in front of himself.

He then unleashes his full strength in a single punch to Latry’s face, shouting, “Come back, Langris!”

This powerful blow, combined with his heartfelt call, helps bring Langris back to himself.

Finral loses consciousness once more due to his injuries and exhaustion.

Awakening Lemiel and the Devil Zagred

Around the time devil Zagred gains a physical body and begins acting openly, Finral is woken up again, this time by Secre Swallowtail.

Following her instructions, he uses his magic to reach the magic statue in Hage Village.

There he helps insert a magic stone into the statue of the first Wizard King, Lemiel Silvamillion Clover.

This action removes Lemiel’s seal and revives him after 500 years so that he can join the battle against Zagred.

After Zagred’s defeat, Finral returns to ordinary squad activities with the Black Bull.

His relationship with Langris softens, and he works more earnestly toward self-improvement.

Heart Kingdom Training and Growth

For research into devils, Finral travels to the Heart Kingdom with Asta, Noelle Silva, and Mimosa Vermillion.

There they encounter Gadjah, a powerful Spirit Guardian, and Finral fights alongside Noelle and Mimosa against him.

In the anime-original six-month training period, Finral tries to build resistance to his weakness around women.

He also trains under the Spirit Guardian Sumeric (Smurik), recommended by Yami for specialized tutoring.

During this time he focuses on strengthening his space magic to better protect his comrades.

His training emphasizes defensive and support applications, such as shielding allies by repositioning them or redirecting attacks.

Spade Kingdom Arc and Confrontation with Zenon

When Zenon Zogratis attacks the Black Bull’s hideout, Finral is away retrieving Yami.

He returns midway through the assault, bringing Yami back to the base.

Finral attempts to protect Asta from Zenon’s attacks with his teleportation.

However, they are unable to stop Zenon from abducting Yami, a failure that leaves Finral crushed and discouraged.

Nacht Faust later provokes and pushes the Black Bull members to grow stronger for the Spade Kingdom invasion.

Finral joins his comrades in intensive training, determined to rescue Yami and make up for his perceived failure.

During the Spade Kingdom raid, Finral senses Langris confronting Zenon and rushes in to help.

The two brothers fight together, combining their space magic to assault Zenon and target his devil heart.

Even with their combined space magic, they are unable to destroy the devil’s heart and are defeated.

Yuno Grinberryall rescues them before they are killed.

Afterward, Secre Swallowtail seals Finral’s injuries so he can move again.

He then rejoins the Black Bull to continue supporting the battle to save Yami and the Clover Kingdom.

Personal Growth and Restraining His Womanizing

Finral’s womanizing is such a defining trait that even his reconciled brother jokingly calls it a “curse.”

He frequently hits on any woman he sees, often earning slaps, glares, or magical retaliation.

However, his long-standing promise to become a man worthy of Finesse Calmreich gradually makes him take responsibility.

After the battles with the elves and the devil, he begins consciously restraining his flirting.

He still reacts strongly to attractive women and sometimes fails to control himself.

But more and more he pulls himself back, trains harder, and tries to act like a reliable future head of the Vaude family.

The Heart Kingdom training arc even shows him deliberately exposing himself to situations with women to build emotional tolerance.

His goal is to stop being ruled by his impulses and become someone who can truly stand beside Finesse.

Magic Attribute and General Style

Finral uses rare space magic.

His spells connect two points in space, allowing instantaneous movement between them.

As the name implies, his magic can bridge different locations in three dimensions: up, down, left, right, and even vertical displacements.

This makes him invaluable for fast travel, surprise repositioning, and saving allies from lethal attacks.

He cannot travel to places he has never visited or at least marked with his own mana.

However, as long as he has placed a mana “mark” there beforehand, he can teleport himself and others over long distances instantly.

Finral is almost completely incapable of traditional attack magic.

Instead, he excels in support, mobility, and battlefield control.

His reflexes and spatial accuracy are extremely high, something even Vetto acknowledges.

He can open portals at precise angles and timings to redirect spells, weapons, or people.

In battle, he usually leaves direct attacks to front-line fighters like Asta, Luck Voltia, or Magna Swing.

By teleporting allies into advantageous positions and pulling them out of danger, he can effectively multiply their offensive power.

He can also win non-lethally by teleporting enemies to faraway or inaccessible locations.

This allows him to incapacitate opponents without unnecessary injury or bloodshed.

Despite his dislike for physical violence, he possesses respectable physical strength.

His punch to Latry’s face during the Elf arc is compared in effect to Yami’s non-lethal “Dark Cloaked Dimension Slash: No Moon,” showing surprising raw power when it truly matters.

Signature Spells

Space Magic: Fallen Angel’s Hole

Fallen Angel’s Hole is Finral’s core space magic.

It connects two points in space to create a portal, allowing beings or objects to move instantly between them.

He can link spaces without regard for orientation, connecting ground to sky, ceiling to floor, or distant terrain in any direction.

This spell is typically used to teleport himself and allies, dodge enemy attacks, and manipulate the battlefield.

He can also use it to move projectiles, redirect spells, or create complex attack routes for melee fighters like Asta.

Teleportation to invisible or distant locations is possible as long as he has visited or “marked” them with his mana beforehand.

This limitation prevents him from randomly teleporting to unknown places, keeping the magic powerful but not omnipotent.

Within its range and marks, however, the spell is extremely fast and precise.

Space Magic: Fallen Angel’s Flapping

Fallen Angel’s Flapping is a spell in which Finral throws space magic projectiles at a target.

Upon contact, the target is forcibly teleported to another location determined by Finral.

The projectile speed is not very high, but the magic tracks its target.

This makes it useful against opponents who cannot easily escape homing attacks.

Finral originally developed this spell in an attempt to learn offensive magic.

He ultimately failed to create real destructive power, but the result became a powerful control and displacement technique instead.

During training for this spell, his hair color changed, likely as a side effect of his intensive magical practice.

Although it is not a damaging spell in itself, it can neutralize foes by relocating them out of the fight.

Asta

Asta greatly respects Finral and calls him “senior,” which Finral secretly loves.

Finral, in turn, sees Asta as his “strongest partner,” since Asta’s anti-magic and melee combat perfectly complement his own support skills.

During the capital defense and many later battles, Finral uses his portals to ensure Asta’s attacks connect.

He often coordinates with Vanessa Enoteca to give Asta near-perfect offensive opportunities and survivability.

Asta’s straightforward courage also inspires Finral to be braver.

Watching Asta never give up pushes Finral to overcome his own cowardice and inferiority complex.

Langris Vaude

Langris is Finral’s younger half-brother and the Vice-Captain of the Golden Dawn.

He is a prodigy in offensive space magic and was favored by their family at Finral’s expense.

Because of this, Langris grew arrogant and resentful, often insulting Finral as weak and worthless.

Finral, weighed down by guilt and low self-esteem, rarely argued back.

Their confrontation in the Royal Knights selection exam forces their issues into the open.

Langris’s magical rampage nearly kills Finral, but also paves the way for their later reconciliation.

During the Elf arc, Finral’s punch and plea to “come back” help free Langris from Latry’s control.

After the crisis and especially into the Spade Kingdom arc, the brothers begin to find common ground.

They even fight side by side against Zenon Zogratis, combining their space magic.

Though they lose that battle, the fact that they fight together at all shows how far their relationship has come.

Finesse Calmreich

Finesse Calmreich is Finral’s arranged fiancée and the woman betrothed to the future head of the Vaude family.

Finral deeply cares for her and once left home partially because he felt unworthy.

He later decides to become a man worthy of Finesse, a goal that spurs him to mature.

Her gentle and understanding nature contrasts with his flirty persona, highlighting the sincere side he shows only to those he truly loves.

After the Elf and devil incidents, Finral begins seriously trying to restrain his womanizing for her sake.

He wants to stand proudly as her husband and as leader of the Vaude family rather than as a cowardly playboy.

Black Bull Squad

The Black Bull is Finral’s found family.

He teleports them, carries them, and enables most of their wildest tactics.

Yami Sukehiro overworks Finral as a transport mage, but also trusts him deeply in battle.

Vanessa Enoteca, Luck Voltia, Magna Swing, Noelle Silva, Charmy Pappitson, Grey, Gauche Adlai, Gordon Agrippa, Henry Legolant and others all rely on his portals.

Although they often tease him about his flirting and cowardice, they recognize his bravery and kindness.

He, in turn, will face even terrifying enemies if it means protecting the Black Bull.

When someone insults his squad, he takes it personally and responds with uncharacteristic fury.

To Finral, the Black Bull is the first place where he was truly accepted for who he is.

Other Allies and Figures

Finral interacts with many Magic Knights and nobles, particularly through joint missions and exams.

He works alongside Mimosa Vermillion, Leopold Vermillion, and Klaus Lunettes during various operations.

He has key support roles in events involving Julius Novachrono, William Vangeance, and many captains such as Fuegoleon Vermillion, Charlotte Roselei, and Dorothy Unsworth.

He also plays an indirect but critical part in reviving Lemiel Silvamillion Clover through Secre Swallowtail’s guidance.

In the Heart Kingdom, he deals with Gadjah and Queen Lolopechka and trains under a Spirit Guardian.

In the Spade Kingdom conflict, his coordination with Yuno Grinberryall, Nacht Faust, and others is vital to the larger war effort.

Finral’s life connects the often-violent world of Magic Knights with the subtler emotional struggles of family pressure, self-worth, and growing up.

Through teleporting others to where they need to be, he gradually finds his own place as well.
