Affiliation (later): Ally of the Clover Kingdom, associate of the Black Bull squad

Magic attribute: Wind

Occupation: Former commander and instructor, later a refugee and swordsman mentor

Fanzell Kruger first appears in the Black Clover novel side story focusing on the Black Bull squad and was later incorporated into the main manga during the Witch’s Forest arc.

He is a former Diamond Kingdom strategist and instructor who defects to the Clover Kingdom after rejecting the Diamond Kingdom’s brutal methods.

He serves as a mentor figure, especially to Asta, teaching him swordsmanship and combat fundamentals.

Despite his impressive military background and intelligence, he often gets involved in ridiculous situations, many of which, for some reason, involve him being naked.

Fanzell is a tall man with a height of 178 cm and a rugged, somewhat unkempt look.

He has messy red hair and a patchy, scruffy stubble that makes him appear older than his actual age of 28.

His clothes tend to be loose or end up disheveled, which contributes to his slightly disreputable appearance.

In comedic fashion, he is frequently shown with his clothes slipping off or gone entirely, leading to him being mistaken for a pervert on more than one occasion.

Fanzell is generally mild-mannered, warm, and easygoing, with a friendly and approachable attitude toward others.

He deeply enjoys seeing his students grow stronger and more confident, and takes pride in their progress.

At the same time, he has a rather shameless, opportunistic, and somewhat lazy side.

He tends to rely on others when he can, often acting in a laid-back, “leave it to someone else” way despite being extremely capable.

Fanzell is surprisingly serious and sharp-minded in battle, switching into a calm, tactical mode when lives are on the line.

He can read situations quickly and come up with effective strategies, reflecting his former position as a staff officer and commander.

In his private life, however, he comes across as a drifting, slightly unreliable adult who somehow ends up naked or half-dressed in public without meaning any harm.

This habit leads to a number of misunderstandings, including his arrest by the Black Bull squad when they assume he is some kind of suspicious flasher.

Diamond Kingdom Commander and Instructor

In the past, Fanzell served in the Diamond Kingdom as a staff officer and military commander.

He was responsible for training many magic warriors and future elite soldiers, including the magic knight Mars and other young talents.

His specialty as an instructor was combat using magic in combination with weapons, especially swordsmanship enhanced by wind magic.

Under his guidance, many magic warriors learned how to fight efficiently on the front lines.

However, over time Fanzell became increasingly disgusted by the Diamond Kingdom’s cruel and inhumane methods.

The kingdom’s willingness to sacrifice and experiment on its own citizens, including child soldiers, clashed with his morals.

Eventually, unable to tolerate the brutality any longer, he decided to defect from the Diamond Kingdom.

He fled together with his fiancée, Dominante Code, seeking refuge in the Clover Kingdom.

Defection and Life as a Fugitive

After his escape, Fanzell and Dominante Code became targets of the Diamond Kingdom’s assassination units.

They lived in hiding, constantly on the run from their former homeland.

During this period of life as a refugee, Fanzell continued to act like a teacher at heart, helping those around him whenever he could.

Despite being pursued, he still showed a caring, almost parental attitude toward younger fighters.

At some point during an encounter with an assassination squad, Fanzell was separated from Dominante Code in the chaos.

This loss drove him to wander in search of her, determined to be reunited no matter how dangerous it might be.

Meeting Asta and Becoming His Sword Instructor

While searching for Dominante Code, Fanzell crossed paths with Asta, who at the time was undergoing training in order to join the Magic Knights.

Their encounter was bizarre: Fanzell was once again naked and being chased by a wild boar when Asta saw him.

Despite the comedic first impression, Fanzell quickly recognized Asta’s potential as a swordsman.

He saw that although Asta lacked magic, his physical ability and anti-magic swords could be honed through proper technique.

Fanzell began to teach Asta swordsmanship, drawing on his experience training magic warriors who used weapon-shaped magic constructs.

He showed Asta how to handle a large blade more efficiently, refining his stance, footwork, and timing.

Because Asta would later become a Magic Knight and a key figure in major battles, Fanzell often refers to Asta as his “last student.”

He clearly feels a sense of pride and responsibility for the role he played in Asta’s development.

After a period of training, Fanzell and Asta went their separate ways, each following their own path.

Fanzell then resumed his search for Dominante Code, still pursued by enemies but unwilling to abandon her.

Capture by the Black Bull and Reunion with Dominante Code

While wandering and investigating leads about Dominante Code’s whereabouts, Fanzell ran into trouble yet again.

Because he has a habit of ending up naked at the worst possible times, he was mistaken for a suspicious pervert.

Members of the Black Bull squad captured him, believing he was some strange, indecent stranger causing trouble.

During this incident, he coincidentally reunited with Asta, who recognized him as his former instructor.

Once the misunderstanding was cleared up, the Black Bull members agreed to help Fanzell locate Dominante Code.

With their assistance and the involvement of his former pupil Mariella, who had defected from the Diamond Kingdom’s assassination unit, Fanzell finally reunited with his fiancée.

Fanzell, Dominante Code, and Mariella decided to live together in the Clover Kingdom.

Fanzell essentially took responsibility for Mariella, treating her as a wayward student who needed guidance after betraying the Diamond Kingdom.

Involvement in the Witch’s Forest Arc

Although originally a character from the novel material, Fanzell later appears in the main manga during the Witch’s Forest arc.

He joins Asta and others on their journey to the Witch’s Forest in search of a way to heal Asta’s severely injured arms.

When the Diamond Kingdom launches an invasion of the Witch’s Forest at the same time, Fanzell steps up to help defend the forest.

He confronts his former homeland’s forces and is forced to battle one of his own former students, Ladros.

This confrontation highlights his inner conflict as a former instructor whose pupils were shaped by the very system he rejected.

Even so, Fanzell fights with determination, protecting his current allies and trying to limit senseless bloodshed.

After the conflict in the Witch’s Forest is resolved, Fanzell takes custody of Fana, another damaged soul connected to his past and the war-torn world.

He chooses to look after her, much like he did with Mariella, continuing his role as a mentor to those in need of guidance.

Asta

Asta is Fanzell’s self-proclaimed “last student” in swordsmanship.

Fanzell helped refine Asta’s use of his massive swords, compensating for his lack of magic with technique and strategy.

He respects Asta’s unyielding spirit and finds inspiration in his refusal to give up despite having no magic.

Their relationship is a mix of teacher–student respect and friendly banter, with Asta grateful for Fanzell’s crucial training.

Dominante Code

Dominante Code is Fanzell’s fiancée and the person he treasures most in his personal life.

He constantly praises her cooking, insisting that almost anything she makes is delicious, which is one of his listed favorite things.

The two fled the Diamond Kingdom together after Fanzell rejected its cruelty.

Their separation during an assassination attack became the driving force behind Fanzell’s wandering journey and eventual involvement with Asta and the Black Bull.

Once reunited, Fanzell and Dominante Code try to build a quieter life in the Clover Kingdom.

They also take in Mariella, forming a small, unconventional family built around second chances and defiance of the Diamond Kingdom.

Mariella

Mariella is a former student of Fanzell and a member of the Diamond Kingdom’s assassination squad.

Despite being sent to kill him, she ultimately helps him and Dominante Code escape, betraying the Diamond Kingdom.

Fanzell accepts responsibility for Mariella, seeing her as another young life twisted by the kingdom’s ruthless system.

He takes her in after reuniting with Dominante Code, acting as a mentor and guardian to help her find a better path.

Mars

Mars is one of the Diamond Kingdom’s magical warriors who once trained under Fanzell’s instruction.

Although the two end up on opposite sides of national conflict, Fanzell still feels a teacher’s concern for him.

Their connection shows the emotional cost of the Diamond Kingdom’s experiments and training methods.

Fanzell’s opposition to the kingdom stems partly from seeing students like Mars forced into brutal roles.

Ladros

Ladros, another Diamond Kingdom warrior, is a direct former student of Fanzell.

During the Witch’s Forest invasion, Fanzell fights Ladros, facing the violent product of the kingdom’s training.

This battle forces Fanzell to confront the consequences of his time as an instructor.

Even while fighting, he remains emotionally conflicted, torn between duty to protect his current allies and his lingering feelings as a teacher.

Fana

After the events in the Witch’s Forest, Fanzell becomes one of the people responsible for looking after Fana.

He treats her similarly to Mariella, as someone wounded by war and manipulation who needs care and guidance.

By taking Fana in, Fanzell extends his role as a protector of lost and damaged youths.

This highlights his core nature: at heart, he is always a teacher, trying to give his “students” a chance at a better life.

Magic Attribute: Wind

Fanzell’s magic attribute is Wind, the same element as Yuno Grinberryall, although their fighting styles differ significantly.

Where Yuno often manipulates wind directly, Fanzell primarily uses wind to enhance and shape physical weapons.

This makes Fanzell one of the relatively few “magic swordsman” types in the series, similar in concept (though not in element) to Yami Sukehiro.

He relies on a mix of physical technique and magical enhancement, making him dangerous at both close and mid-range.

Magic Swordsman Style

Fanzell’s signature style involves wrapping swirling wind around a rod-like object, usually a sword, turning it into a massive wind blade.

He can then use this weapon for slashing, thrusting, or firing cutting blasts of wind.

Because he trained many magic warriors whose abilities manifested in weapon-like forms, he has deep knowledge of how to integrate magic and martial arts.

This experience made him the perfect instructor for someone like Asta, whose fighting style revolves around large swords.

In battle, Fanzell combines solid footwork, sharp tactical awareness, and versatile wind constructs.

He can adapt his techniques for offense, defense, crowd control, or restraint depending on the situation.

Wind Creation Magic: “Blade Emperor of the Cutting Wind” – General Description

Fanzell’s main technique is a wind creation magic that generates a large sword or blade-like construct of compressed, swirling air.

He channels this around a physical object, using it to extend his reach and cutting power, or launches it as a flying slash.

He informally nicknames this technique “Zacky,” giving a casual, almost affectionate flavor to his deadly magic.

Different variations of this spell adjust its range, density, spread, and function for attack or restraint.

Wind Creation Magic – Offensive Forms

“Blade Emperor of the Cutting Wind”

Fanzell wraps spiraling wind around a stick-shaped object, typically a sword, shaping it into a large blade of wind.

With this, he can perform powerful slashes and also fire arcs of cutting wind for long-range attacks.

He treats this as his standard, all-purpose combat spell.

It balances offense and utility, serving as the base form from which his other variations develop.

“Blade Emperor of the Cutting Wind: Kogarashi”

In this variation, Fanzell launches a large number of wind blades created from his main “Blade Emperor” construct.

These countless slicing currents rush toward the enemy, overwhelming them with multiple simultaneous attacks.

Because of the barrage-like nature of this form, it covers a wide area and is effective against groups or agile opponents.

The nickname loosely reflects the image of many sharp gusts blowing through at once.

“Blade Emperor of the Cutting Wind: Ridge Crossing”

This technique sends out a massive wave of wind shaped like a rolling surge.

The wave strikes the target with enough force to easily knock a person off their feet and send them flying.

It focuses more on pushing power and impact rather than fine cutting precision.

This makes it useful for area control, crowd dispersal, or knocking enemies away from allies.

“Blade Emperor of the Cutting Wind: Gale”

In this form, Fanzell charges in with his wind sword and simultaneously slams a large volume of compressed wind into the target.

The attack combines a direct sword strike with an internal bombardment of needle-like wind shots.

He essentially impales the enemy with the blade, then floods them with high-speed bursts of wind from close range.

This creates a devastating finishing move that is especially lethal in one-on-one combat.

Wind Restraint Magic

“Blade Emperor of the Cutting Wind: Whirling Storm”

This variation focuses on restraining rather than harming the target.

Fanzell summons four small but powerful whirlwinds that surge toward the opponent.

Each whirlwind wraps around one of the target’s limbs, binding their arms and legs in swirling air.

By immobilizing the enemy, Fanzell can stop them from casting spells, swinging weapons, or escaping.

This restraint technique showcases his versatility, proving he can capture enemies alive instead of simply cutting them down.

It reflects his background as a commander who values control over the battlefield, not just raw destruction.

Fanzell’s narrative role blends comedy, mentorship, and moral contrast.

His naked mishaps and misunderstandings provide lighthearted humor, even as his backstory highlights the dark nature of the Diamond Kingdom.

As Asta’s sword instructor, Fanzell contributes directly to the protagonist’s growth.

Without his guidance, Asta’s swordsmanship would be far cruder, and many later battles might have turned out differently.

His defection from the Diamond Kingdom emphasizes the theme of choosing one’s own path rather than blindly following a cruel system.

By taking in ex-assassins like Mariella and damaged individuals like Fana, he shows that redemption and second chances are possible.

Through his appearances in both novel and main manga storyline, Fanzell stands out as a kind-hearted, slightly unreliable but ultimately dependable adult.

He bridges the world of enemy nations and the hero’s side, bringing depth to the setting while remaining fun and memorable.
